ESPN reported this morning that this year's Super Bowl was the 2nd most watched program in TV history and I'm just wondering if any of you have ever seen a bigger "home game" at the Super Bowl than we had last weekend with the Steelers faithful. I was impressed. They represented well and were loud. Even the Cowboys who are "America's Team" didn't get that kind of backing in their last Super Bowls.
It also brings me back to the game Pittsburgh played at Dallas and the huge contingent of Steelers fans at that game. It pissed me off how many Steelers fans were at that game and how loud they were.
What's most impressive about is it that Pittsburgh is on the East Coast (associate football more with the warmer grassier states), it's a relatively small city and both those games were halfway across the country. Plus, the Steelers haven't won anything since the 70's so it doesn't seem like a bandwagon team. I would put the Steelers as one of the top followed teams up there with the Cowboys, Raiders, Bears, Packers, Redskins, Giants, and other teams with rich hisory but I didn't know they had so many fans.

The Steelers fans do show great support. I'll give them that. At the Super Bowl it looked like a home game because Pitt was only 45 mins If I heard right. That helps also. Plus, Seattle is clear across the US. Plane tickets plus game tickets probably cost to much for the people in Seattle.
But, I do agree.. the sad part of all of this seemed like the Steelers fans out numbered the Cowboys fans in our very own staidum.

Bandwagoners and wood workers- where were they in late November? I sure as heck didn't see any- I live in NC and now all I see in black and gold-before two weeks ago I rarely ever saw it. On the other hand, I was in PA (all over the state for 10 days) in November and didn't see nary a bit of black and gold- but I saw a whole lot of silver and blue, purple and black, and green and white.

Should Dallas return to the Superbowl you'll see ridiculous ratings. This game gets bigger every year; it's only the intensity of the matchup that limits it. I thought Dallas-Pittsburgh in 1995 had higher ratings?

Dallas/Pittsburgh was the most watched game in history. Here's a link to an article about the Stupor Bowl XL's ratings: http://tv.zap2it.com/tveditorial/tve_main/1,1002,271|99888|1|,00.html

I'll never forgett that home game last year in Dallas. There were alot of Steeler fans in Texas that day. If the Cowboys aren't America's team than Pittsburgh definitely is.

We are not America's Team- America is fickle and fair weather- Pittsburgh is America's Team right now, next year it'll be somebody else, last year it was New England, three months ago it was Indy- whoever is winning is America's team.

Now, you're just being inflammatory.
There's a difference between calling yourself America's team, and being America's team. Ask the Saints.

Well they are the second generation of fans of a team that won four SBs in the 70s. Plus football is HUGE (high school and college in addition to their Steelers) in Western PA much the same way it is in Texas. I think these two factors contribute to their huge fanbase.

If you want to see something special, let the Cowboys and Steelers make it to the Super Bowl next year.
It will "by far" be the most watched game, and the hardest hitting contest in the history of sports.
And BTW, when you start to win after 10 years of being absent from the SB, all the fans come out to play. Jerry is jealous, and will get the job done this offseason.

No more like 4 1/2 to 4 3/4 hours drive. Its about 260-300 miles depending on where you live in Pittsburgh or Detroit area.
Pitts fans travel well. But Dallas fans are spread all over us. Living in Detroit, 1996-2004, went to three Dallas games there, and probably close to 30-40% were dallas Cowboys fans. And trust me, 90% weren't travelling there to see the game.
What Pittsburgh fans probably would do is, like Philly fans, sell their house, withdraw from Kids savings accounts etc. to get to the game, unlike say Dallas Cowboys fans :D

Cowboy fans sold there tickets to last years game because we sucked!, Just wait till we get good again. Fans jump on whoever's good, just look at all the Eagles stuff that was around last year. I would make a bet that if the Raiders started a 2 or 3 year run, you would start to see there stuff everywhere!.

I would agree. The Stealers have a very large and loyal fan base but they they travel to all the games and show up in huge numbers. The Cowboys have HUGE numbers of fans in every city as well as in other countries (easily the most popular American team in Mexico in any sport). Every time I have been to a Cowboys game we have been very well represented, at least a third and sometimes closer to half the stadium is full of Cowboys jerseys. I have never been to a game in Texas Stadium so all of my experiences have been in LA and Charlotte but if you watch the games on TV you will see large numbers of Cowboys fans at every game.
Like RCowboyFan said these are not people traveling to the game but local Cowboys fans.
This is what makes the Cowboys "America's Team" and always has. The Stealers just have an incredibly loyal fan base that will travel thousands of miles to attend games. They played a game against the Jags a couple of years ago that a friend of mine went to and he had trouble getting a hotel room because they were all sold out to Stealers fans.
Everywhere I go, when I am weraing a Cowboys shirt, people always comment on it (usually positively). I see more Cowboys stuff here in Raleigh than I do Panthers gear. I'd say the Packers are next in terms of fans of other teams but that is just an observation.

Pittsburgh is America's team and I only say this so I can encourage and incite Cowboy fans to be more proactive and reclaim the title.
I live in a pretty football neutral state since Arizona residents don't support the Cardinals and I could easily find many more Steeler fans here than Cowboy fans although it's supposed to be the other way. I haven't seen it. When the Cardinals played the Cowboys, most of the fans were Cowboy fans. However, when the Packers played here, nearly the entire stadium was full and they were almost entirely Packer fans.
Yes, I'll say it. We need to be more rowdy and passionate. This sitting quietly and behaving in the stands is ridiculous. I'm not saying we should pour drinks on people or start fights but how about standing up every once in a while and shouting or actually defending your team in public when others say : "I hate the Cowboys." Seriously, I feel like I fight these battles by myself a lot of times knowing that some of the people in the immediate area are Cowboys fans. This would never happen if I was a Packer, Eagle, Steeler, Browns, or Raider fan.

How about letting the Stealers develop their own persona, instead of stealing ours? I get tired of every Superbowl winner, or whatever, calling themselves America's Team. Contrary to some of you, I like the title America's Team and think it fits perfectly. JMO
BTW, who could have guessed that I liked the title of America's Team? lol

The Steelers, imo, have the most, and most dedicated fans in the NFL. Above the Cowboys even. Call them bandwagoneers if you want but that doesn't make it true. Whether you like it or not they have a better and more dedicated fanbase than the Cowboys, period.

Some of you guys are forgettin' about all the Fans The Cowboys have not only throughout the U.S but, throught out many more countries. as mentioned in a reply above, Mexico for instance theres no more popular team football wise than the Dallas Cowboys. I would love to have the boys' play @ Mexico City in their over 110.000 Stadium, that thing would get packed and easily 70% of that would be Dallas fans.
Props for the steelers, they do have a big fan-base without a Doubt. But take in consideration , pitts is very close to Detroit. Its like having Dallas play de SB in Arizona vs. the Bengals. Dallas is gonna have more fans, for obvious reasons.
I still think, theres no team with more Fans than the Dallas Cowboys. there is more loyal tho.

That's actually a valid point- many Pittsburghers began fleeing that cesspool of a town in the early 80s when they lost their jobs and their Stealers fell on hard times- I guess being unemployed AND having your team suck would be a lot to ask of an uneducated, wife beating alcoholic. :D However, in the 70s it was OK because they were winning.

We played the Steelers in 2004, which is 2 years ago, And it still doesn't
mean they are America's Team..face it no matter how many of the other
fans come to Texas Stadium for a game..Dallas will all ways be America's
Team
we are the most loved and the most hated in all of sports, basicly we are
the Yankees of the NFL, everyone loves to hate Dallas, Even Browns fans
have more hate for Dallas then they do the Steelers their natural rivals
Pittsburgh could never match the love/hate people show us so we will all
ways be america's team

Another way you can look at it is that the Cowboys are by far the more hated team nation wide. All the really good teams inspire both love and hatred, just look at the Yankees, Lakers, Duke etc.
Most people are pretty much indifferent about the Steelers so they'll never be as big of a draw us the Cowboys.

The Steeler's old fan base just simply came out of the woodwork to see their working class Rolling Stones at halftime. Had it been Pearl Jam or Nirvana (Past tense), Seatlle fans would have overflooded the state of Michigan for that. A super bowl + a Stones show, the albeit high cost of a Super Bowl ticket, that's a steal for working class america that follows both football and the ungodly expensive to see Rolling Stones.
We're talking two entirely different demographs here, for a game that really is mostly about the sideshows (aka halftime show, pregame shows, etc, etc) anyway, and you can't tell me the entertainment didn't play a part in it. This years Super Bowl was obviously catered towards the older generations based on the acts they brought in to perform. And speaking on part of that same generation that was around when Seatlle conquered the entertainment world, this years super bowl has to be the least appealing one I have ever laid eyes on, entertainment wise. And I fully believe most tickets held by super bowl attendees are not always that of the "die hard" fan, but instead held by the casual fan with money that gets lucky enough to land one.
And as far as ratings go, same thing, the Stones drove up those number expedetially. Cause I think most of us here can agree that this super bowl, game-wise, lacked considerably! Just think how many of us here didn't even watch it or just half-watched it while doing other things. I'd be willing to bet the majority of those ratings numbers came at halftime.
And that's my take on it all. Steelers are NOT America's Team----WE ARE!
