View Full Version : Josh Brown?

I did a search and couldn't find any quick answers, so let me ask real fast.

Did we offer a contract to Josh Brown? I was driving home from vacation today and was listening to Pat Kirwan on Sirius Radio. He said we did the smart thing in offering restricted free agent Josh Brown a contract, considering Seattle is tied up with figuring out what to do with Hutchinson.

Did I misunderstand this? Or is this already common knowledge?

nothing yet. I imagine we are waiting until they match Hutchinson - he'll eat up something like 18 million in cap space for the first year.

I have not heard anything official, only speculation.

Maybe Kirwan knows something....

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere last night that they did put an offer on the table. I'm sure we will find out soon enough.

I think we put an offer on the table for Vanderjakt (sp?) as he came in for a quick visit on Wednesday.

I hope we are in the works to aquire Josh Brown. The kid is a good kicker. Leaps and bounds better than what we had last year. Would come relatively cheap, and he is young.

Only problem is how do to structure the contract so that the Seahawks won't try to match it. So we can't go to cheap or whole thing is waste of time. I'm thinking a 5 year deal in neighborhood of $7.5M with $2M signing bonus. Hopefully since latest word is Seahawks will match Hutchinson offer, our $2M SB & base salary to him of $1.5M should give him pause.

BTW: Brown is 4 year vet probably making just above minimum; He's still inconsistent--in 05 his FG kicking percentage was 72%; in 04 it was 92%. Does anybody remember if Seattle is domed stadium ? if so what his percentages there compared to outside?

Seattle plays in an open air stadium.

"Going to" sounds a lot nlike wait and see how cheap they can go to get him. But I have seen no articles claiming otherwise.

Actually they are probably going to wait to see if Seattle matches the offer for Hutchinson.

If they do, they'll be in a much worse position to match for Brown.

now how would you get a restricted FA on the cheap? with these guys you always end up overpaying so that their team doesn't match.

That's exactly what they're doing. If Seattle matches the offer for Hutchinson the cowboys probably have a contract drawn up for Brown that the Hawks can't match.

Seattle is reportedly matching -- but they aren't matching some of the terms, just the money. Minny added a clause that guarantees the entire deal if Hutch isn't the top paid guy on the OL. But Seattle already had a guy who makes more in Walter Jones.

This one will be tied up in arbitration for a while -- I don't know whether they will be charged Hutchinson's current cap charge or the money from the new contract due to the appeal that Minny is likely going to file.

If it goes to arbitration then I would send the offer to Brown immediately.

They might not be able to take the chance of matching on Brown if the Hutch deal could still go either way.

Kirwan knows LOTS. I listen to him every day and the things he comes across with baffle the mind alot of times. He needs to be a GM somewhere again Hint Hint

If they are trying to match they want the Hutch deal to go their way. All we need to wait for is the officially matching which they can do between now and Monday. I bet they wait until the last minute though.

They still need cash to re-sign guys like Strong and Morris too

He's an actual insider -- he worked in the biz.

Also keep in mind that Brown is a restricted FA, so if the Seahawks do not match, then I believe we owe Seattle a draft pick. Someone might be able to correct me on this, but if correct I think we have to pony up the round pick in which Seattle drafted him. I don't think we have to compensate if he was signed as a street FA.

Another kicker to keep an eye on is Olindo Mare. Appearantly the Phins have contacted him (for the 3rd straight year in a row) to take a pay cut. He doesn't seem to be biting at this point and there is specualtion that he'll be released if he doesn't restructure.
