I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that most of you would want to pick Mike Huff at #18 if he were available. I'll also go out on another limb and say most of you have decided that there is no chance he will be available, and thus found a different free safety prospect to target. Well, if the history of the draft means anything, we may have an excellent shot at getting him with the 18th pick.

Here's a list of every single safety selected before pick #18 since the year 1992 (Troy Vincent went #7 that year, but ended up playing corner his whole career until 2004):

Roy Williams, #8, 2002
Troy Polamalu, #16, 2003
Sean Taylor, #5, 2004
Thomas Davis, #14, 2005 (not even going to play safety this year)

That is it people. 4, four, FOUR in the last 13 years! And notice what they are that Huff isn't? Physical, intimidating hitters. Huff is a good tackler, but he doesn't scare anybody over the middle. Ed Reed was AMAZING at Miami, an elite cover safety. He was picked 24th. Coverage safeties do not get drafted high. Huff to the Cowboys at 18 is VERY possible.

Or maybe I'm just dreaming...

I hope you're right, but after his 40 time, I don't see how he makes it to 18.
With that said, now that we've solidified the WR position and a tackle position, I think the focus will directly go to FS and Huff is the best. Jimmy Williams would be outstanding also, but no way he slips.

but corners get picked before 18 all the time, and thats probably what he will be drafted as

Exactly...some team will draft Huff with a top 15 pick with the intentions of converting him into a corner. Only if he ran in the 4.5 range would he be in our sights...unfortunetly jaw's drop when safety's run 4.3's. To much stock is put into 40 times, and its a sad thing

Huff would be awesome but I do not see him getting past the Lions. To bad there was not a highly ranked W/R in this years draft. We might of had a shot if there was. Actually I see Williams slipping a bit so we might be able to steal him.

None of the guys you named have the versatility to play CB.
Huff does and that is where his value skyrockets.

Huff is probably going to be a corner in the NFL

Here's a mock draft that if it would happen, well, I'd just have to pee my pants!

I have followed Huff since he was in highschool and he would be an excellent addition to our defense.

Like others said, he can play FS or CB and very good in coverage...he might cost more than standard FS, but he is worth it.

I love Huff and he would be a steal at 18, but I think Lawson or Carpenter would be a bigger impact for us.
However, it would be really nice to have a FS with the ability to cover like a CB.

I would be elated w/ Huff at 18. I doubt it, but if he's there, our secondary would be ridiculus. If he's not there at 18, I would prefer Bobby Carpenter, Manny Lawson, or Greenway.

I think besides DET SF is a strong possibility for Huff.

If we landed Huff at #18...then I could dream that one of Wimbley or Lawson is there in the 2nd.

That would be insane to land those two...both would start as Rookies.

I'd love to have Huff at #18 but I doubt he'll fall that far.

That mock is nice.

that mock is nice for us but a lot of teams before us will not draft like that.

i will tell you right now, i saw almost every single 49ers game and trust me Lendale White is not going at #6 because he runs similar to Frank Gore and they would much rather get a DE/OLB so either mario williams or AJ Hawk at 6 but since Hawk will be goin to the packers . . . Huff will go to Detroit or Buffalo, maybe ATL and i dont know what the situation in Baltimore is. so definately 2 maybe even 4 teams before us are lookin at him.

I would love to get Huff at #18, but that means that we might miss out on Carlenter and Lawson, with Jason Allen still on the board. I think it would be safer to tkae Lawson or Carpenter in round 1, then Jason Allen in round 2. But if somehow Huff or Simpson is there at #18, then we still might get Carpenter in round 2.
