ORLANDO, Fla. - Armed with extra draft picks in the first and fourth rounds of the April draft, the Denver Broncos are searching for potential deals.

Two sources in the league said Monday that Broncos coach Mike Shanahan has made informal inquiries about Green Bay Packers receiver Javon Walker. Those discussions have included former Packers coach Mike Sherman, who is now on the Houston Texans staff.

Shanahan could not be reached for comment.

Walker, who publicly has threatened to retire instead of play for the Packers again, is under contract to Green Bay for the 2006 season, during which he is scheduled to count $1,165,000 against the salary cap.

Packers general manager Ted Thompson said he has "received inquiries" about Walker and would listen to any proposed deals. Thompson has not publicly given Walker permission to seek a trade on his own.

The fifth-year veteran is coming off surgery to repair the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Walker was injured in the Packers' 2005 opener and underwent surgery in mid-September.

He is unhappy with his contract - he's in the final year of a $6.7 million deal he signed in 2002 - and held out of Green Bay's minicamps last season in search of a new deal. He returned to the team for training camp and was injured against the Detroit Lions.

Walker had 1,382 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns in 2004

This would be a good get for them. I wish it were us.

maybe here's my point - you want a speed guy - then let's go with walker for probably NOT a $5mil bonus next year. but i'd rather have walker than glenn even if so far he's a younger "not as proven" glenn.

Remember speed guys need almost 2 years to fully recover from knee surguries like walker had and there is no guarantee he would be the same afterwards.

Not really, CC... remember, the reason the Broncos are willing to trade away picks this year is their cap situation...

And Walker wants a new deal... that's why he wants out of Green Bay... so, can the Broncos afford him if they DO trade for him??

Conspiracy Theory:

The Broncos’ Journey to Matt Leinart

The Broncos’ journey to Matt Leinart began when Matt declined to join the NFL Draft as a junior. At that time, Broncos’ head coach and GM, Mike Shanahan, began to map out a plan to draft Matt Leinart.

Here is what I believe the plan to be:

The first hurdle - was that the Broncos are a perennial playoff team, meaning their draft pick is usually 20 or lower. Their first round pick for the 2005 draft was 25, which is OK, because our target is pick #1 in the 2006 draft. So, let’s trade #25 in 05 to a team that will have a top 15 pick in 2006.

Target - Redskins, who, by many publications prior to the 2005 season, were predicted to finish with 5 or less wins. This would net the Broncos a top ten pick in the 2006 draft.

Second hurdle – Redskins finish as a playoff team, giving the Broncos pick #22 in 2006. Armed with picks 22 & 29 in this draft, Shanahan goes to work -– slowly winding his way into a deal between the Jets and Falcons, giving up the 29th and 93rd picks and a 2007 4th-rounder in order to secure the 15th pick this April.

With that in place, the next shoe must drop…now with the 15th and 22nd pick, the Broncos will try and work out a deal with the Texans for the 1st overall selection in this draft to take Matt Leinart. My prediction is that it will take the 15th and 22nd picks of this draft as well as the Bronco’s first round selection next year in order to the Texans to move that far.

At this point, holding two first-round picks gained from trades, the Broncos cannot afford to NOT give the Texans what they want for the #1 pick. They’ve worked too hard and trading into the #2 spot would leave them vulnerable to a Jets trade up to #1 for the QB they covet.
