Favre says he wants to play, but wants to win more
BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. - Green Bay Packer Brett Favre tells a newspaper he wants to play again but he'll return only if the Packers can assemble a winning team.
And if he does return this year, Favre told the Sun Herald newspaper there is "no doubt" it will be his last season.
The venerable quarterback said he wants the Packers to get better players and make a commitment to winning.
"Last season, expectations were high and it was a bad situation," Favre said of the team's 4-12 season, his only losing one as quarterback. "If we can't compete at a high level, I can walk away and my legacy will speak for itself."
Rumors have been circulating that Favre would have to make his decision to return by Saturday, but Favre said they're untrue.
"If I don't tell them by Saturday, what will they do, cut me?" Favre said.
Favre, in town to award grants to groups following Hurricane Katrina, said he has been talking to the team for the past month and there are things that both parties have to sort out.
"If they don't come together, I guess I won't play," Favre said. "I don't know if my decision will be made by Saturday."
Favre said some days he wants to play and other days he wants to retire. Knowing he can still compete at a high level is making the decision tough, he said.
Even his wife is ready for his decision, Favre said.

How arrogant can he be. If I were GB I would tell Favre it's time to move on and let the young QB's deveop. It's not like he was setting the NFL on fire the last couple of years any way. The losing season last year was just as much, if not more, his fault as it was any one elses.

Makes his comments towards Walker last year that much richer. He threw Walker under the proverbial team bus and then turns around this year and flaunts his position power over the team, the very same team he insisted Walker put ahead of the WR's own personal needs. It's all just a touch hypocritical.

Favre's 25 TD passes away from passing Marino for most all-time. He's not quitting now. His whole "I'll play IF we improve enough" schtick is just to con the Packers GM into signing/drafting a bunch of players who would help them win next year.
So far this offseason, the Packers haven't improved - they might be worse. They replaced Ryan Longwell with Billy Cundiff, they lost their DC Jim Bates, and their new HC hasn't inspired the Packers fans I know. Oh, and Javon Walker wants to skip town in the worst way possible.
Regardless of all this, my money's on Favre coming back for 1 more losing season.

What Brett really wants is another wide receiver to compliment Donald Driver, someone who'll catch more than 5 TDs, a better TE, a reliable RB and some o-linemen. Basically, he wants a new cast of offensive players.
I don't blame him though. The guy had QB rating over 70 which isn't great by his standards but he threw for almost 4,000 yards. He tried to force some throws to make things happen.
Packers front office looks to be in a rebuild mode so Brett is probably not going to get everything he wants. But he's still a good QB - he just wants some new toys to play with.

Packers fans that I know are quickly growing tired of this whole ordeal.
Personally, I would have told Favre, well you cant decide ? I will decide for you. Thanks for the memories.
If Favre had minded his own business last season he would have Walker to throw to.
If Favre had made this stance last season, they might not have lost more than half of their line in the past two years.
If Favre would have not reverted to his gunslinging, toss it up mentality last year, the Packers might have actually won a few more games.
Favre has single handedly screwed the Packers by his actions this off-season.
Its tiresome.

What I get a kick out of is that he is NOW telling GB to do what it takes to win this year and he'll come back...AFTER all the good players in FA are already gone, leaviing virtually 1 avenue for the packers to even try to accomplish what he wants.. through the draft. Couldn't happen even if they wanted to try.
About a month too late, Farve.

McCarthy weighs in on Favre
By CHRIS HAVEL
PackersNews
ASHWAUBENON — While Brett Favre (http://www.forecaster.info/packersnews/football/player.cgi?0489) weighs his decision whether to play this season, Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy hopes Favre focuses on the thing he believes matters most.
“What I’ve told Brett is the things you need to focus on is, No. 1, playing quarterback for the Green Bay Packers, and being the leader that you have been since 1992, and don’t worry about the other stuff,” McCarthy said Friday.
When asked what that “other stuff” is, McCarthy said: “You know. Who we’re signing. Who’s coming here. Football probably was best for him when it was the most fun. It was the most fun when it was the simplest.
“I look at ’99,” he added. “I would still say of all the guys I’ve worked with, he has done as good a job as anybody I’ve been around at keeping outside distractions away from his game. I think that’s truly one of his strengths. I think he needs to grab hold of that and play to his strength, which is focusing on being the Packers’ quarterback.”
On Thursday, Favre told the Sun Herald in Gulfport, Miss., that he wants to play for the Packers only if they assemble a winning team. He also said that even if he plays, this is going to be his final NFL season.
“Last season, expectations were high and it was a bad situation,” Favre said of the Packers’ 4-12 record, his first losing mark in 14 seasons here. “If we can’t compete at a high level, I can walk away, and my legacy will speak for itself.”
McCarthy said he doesn’t have a problem with Favre making a one-year commitment. “This business is about year-to-year, especially where he’s at in his career,” McCarthy said. “Maybe I should, but I don’t have a problem with that.”
Favre, 36, denied rumors that the Packers expected him to make a decision today. Favre was due a $3 million roster bonus today, which was pushed back from March 15. General Manager Ted Thompson said Friday the deadline had been pushed back again, but he declined to reveal the date.
Favre’s apparent retirement quandary hasn’t hindered McCarthy’s ability to prepare for the upcoming season.
McCarthy, a first-year head coach, said Favre’s decision won’t directly affect his progress until the team’s post-NFL draft minicamp in May.
“It hasn’t been a (problem) at all,” he said. “I have targets set for every month, for both players and coaches, and you can look at my schedule. So far, we’ve hit all those targets. From a playing standpoint, (Favre’s uncertain status) hasn’t been a hindrance. Now if he’s not here for the first minicamp, now he’s affecting the team.”
McCarthy said he and Favre haven’t discussed the head coach’s expectations for attendance at offseason functions such as the minicamps.
“We only visited on that briefly,” he said. “But once again, I think it’s important for everyone to be here (in May) just based on the plan that we want to accomplish as much as we can in the offseason so training camp comes together. Obviously it’s important for the quarterback position, because he benefits from it more than anybody.”
McCarthy described his discussions with Favre as “positive” regarding the new coach’s offensive philosophy.
“I’ve said this time and time again — we’re talking about a (Pro Football) Hall of Fame quarterback that has an incredible number of repetitions in a lot of our basic concepts. I like that because A, I believe in those concepts and B, we’re talking about a guy that has 15 years worth of reps tied up in that. That’s a huge advantage, and one that we need to maximize and utilize.”
McCarthy and Favre have discussed the quarterback’s ability to have input on the offense.
“Input is in the spring,” he said. “That’s when it happens. It’s not about plays. It’s about conceptual thinking. That is going to take place (in May) at the minicamps.”
Farve wants them to provide him with talent so they can win...but...
Their best reciever he has posioned...They can add more talent is Farve retires and they save a ton of cap move.
So the best way to add the talent Farve wants is to take a pay cut. Bet it doesn't happen.

He was not a month late. He told them the same thing at the beginning of free agency when they went to his home in Hattiesburg, MS. It's just been made a bigger deal out of lately because the top players are gone. I believe he is going to come back regardless. TOO MUCH MONEY TO TURN DOWN FOR ONLY 1 YEAR.

That's the craziest, most "hey, look at me, I'm great" statement I've seen in awhile.
I'd expect this from some 21 year old college stud, foregoing his Sr. year to go pro, but not from some 35-something vet, foregoing his retirement because he thinks he's still got "it".

I don't like Favre's insinuation that they are losing because of "everyone else" and that he will only come back if they can put together a winning team. I wonder if Prima Donna Favre ever thought about the effect that his "maybe I'll play, maybe I'll quit" mantra has had on the team for the last couple of offseasons. I wonder if he thought about his part in the losing? Like the ba-zillion interceptions he's thrown over the last few years.
How are the Packers supposed to be active in Free Agency or form any kind of draft strategy to get better when they have to wait all this time to know if their leader is on board?
I know that nobody asked me but if there are days that he 'wants to play' and days that he 'feels like retiring' then he probably needs to walk away.

He's a very good quarterback but I don't even like using the word great with Brett Favre. He's a kind of guy that will kill his own team as much as he kills the opposition. I know he's won the Super Bowl, so did Trent Dilfer and Jim McMahon however no one is fitting McMahon or Dilfer for greatness. Favre's propensity to play like dren when it counts most has gotten his Packers knocked out of the playoffs a whole lot more than he's won the Super Bowl.
Great is reserved for the guys who take advantage of 'the moment'. The guys who play their best when their teams need them to; not the guys who toss multiple interceptions and singlehandedly lose playoff games. Joe Montana is great. Troy Aikman is great. Terry Bradshaw is great. Tom Brady is great.
And then there's guys like Brett Favre and Dan Marino...guys who should rightfully go into the Hall of very good.

Favre is funny. When he says better players of course he is talking about the rest of the team. I'm sure some of the players think that the QB position needs upgrading as well.
It is the highth of arrogance to diss your teammates that they need to be replaced in order for him to come back. You would think he made all pro this last season and all of his teammates stunk up the place.
Also, he said basically that he would set his own timetabl and deadline. "What will they do, cut me?" That is what I would do.

Just like Emmit Smith and Larry Allen did. It's time for GB to move on If theywere smart they would realize that Farve is on the downside of his career and probably couldn't take an all-pro team to the SB.
