Goose Gosselin on Norm today. Cowboys bullet points:

- Didn't predict Cowboys pick. Norm didn't ask.
- Safeties: Huff of Texas will prolly be top 10 pick, Jason Allen of Tennessee maybe will go 18-24 range. Both guys can cover slot receivers so they're extra valuable.
- Qbs off board in order: leinart, cutler, young .. all in the top 10. Denny Green loves Young if he lasts to 10.
- It'll be awfully expensive this year for teams to move up to the top five or so.
- First round: there's first tier of 5-6 great players. Then blue chippers go to about 14 players out. 15-20 is a flat spot on the draft board. It picks up in the 20s, value-wise.
- Great year for value at bottom of 1st rd and top of 2nd; Goose has 36 projected first-round talent/value players on his board.
- Because of the above it will be hard for the Cowboys to trade down, lots of teams in the mid-late teens will want to trade down too. As always you have to hope for a slider player someone wants to move up for ... (but there's so much value at the bottom of the first round and early 2nd they might not want to anyway ??).
- If the Boys wanted to move down in the 1st round Goose says they would be wise to accept a third pick right now if it were offered - they shouldn't wait until they're on the clock.

This is what I am afraid of. I wouldn't be surprised to see us keep #18 and then slide back a bit with the 2nd rounder to pick up a 4th.

Thanks for the recap!

This draft is looking pretty deep on the first day, with several stars at the very top. Unfortunately, as mentioned, that 18th spot is kind of a weird area. I still think that someone will slip. Someone always does. I just hope it's someone that Cowboys have use for.

That's also crossed my mind. If you want a fourth, there are other ways to go about getting it.

Agreed and I think that unfortunately this will make it hard to trade that #18 pick. Personally, I am hoping for a Huff, Ngata or Justice to fall.

I basically agree with what he said, this year some teams will get a 1st round talented player in the 2nd and 3rd rounds because of so many quality players. This will be good and bad for the Cowboys, they might overpay in the 1st round unless than trade down, also they will be able to grab pretty good players in th 2nd and 4th rounds.

Unless someone we really want falls, I would trade down to the 2nd rd and pick up the 4th we lost and maybe another 5th. Then I would trade down again to the end of the second rd- and have 2 3rds and maybe 2 4ths. Then I would bundle the whole smear and get the first rd 2007 for the Texans or Packers (pretty much guaranteed losers next year) and then make the play for Quinn.
Naaaahhhh.
Still would trade down into the early 2nd then grab a good LB, take the best FS you can find in the 3rd, and maybe a developmental Guard in the 4th. Fifita in the 5th.

Someone always wants to move up....that's a fact....who in his right mind could have predicted the Bills would want to move up for Losman?

Someone always falls. Look at Derrick Johnson last year, some were predicting he'd go top 5-10 and he slid to the middle of the draft. So it'll probably drop someone that was supposed to go 10-12 to us. Hopefully they are the BPA for the Cowboys.

This is what I am afraid of. !

theres nothing wrong with picking at 18 as long as they get value there...we'll have the opportunity to get a good player..there havent been many cases of us "reaching" (especially grossly reaching) for a player since BP got here, and Ireland did a great job running the draft last yr...

I'd like to see us move down and pick up a 3rd or 4th or something as well, but it doesnt mean we cant have a good to great draft of it doesnt happen

I agree with this, but I think that the Dolphins, the Vikings, and the Cowboys are in a very enviable position. I say this for 2 reasons:

1. It is the part of the draft where the so-called "better players" fall to if for some reason teams surprise with their picks. I think the following players fall into this catagory:

- Winston Justice
- Brodrick Bunkley
- Jimmy Willliams

I'm not condoning not taking one of these players if they drop, I'm just saying there could be trade possibilities here.

2. This is the part of the draft where the top end position players that aren't "blue-chippers" will be. I think the following players fall into this catagory:

- Chad Jackson &/or Santonio Holmes - the 2 best receivers in the draft, with a significant drop-off of talent following them. So don't think that teams like the Seahawks, Steelers, Bears, Chiefs, and the Broncos 2nd pick, if they go other than WR with their 1st pick, won't move up to take one of these players.

- Deangelo Williams, Laurence Morency and LenDale White - all 3 are considered very decent RB prospects for the NFL. As of right now, we know that there are 3, maybe 4 teams pretty desperate for a starting RB in this draft (Colts, Panthers, Steelers, and maybe Patriots). The problem here is that we are also hearing that the Broncos and Vikings could very likely go RB also. So, there will be a big competition in who gets these RBs. The Broncos and Vikings can pretty much get any of these RBs they want, but after them the other 3 teams will have to compete, and might possisbly give up more than market value to do so.

- Defensive Line - if all goes as predicted the 3 major defensive linemen (Mario Williams, Haloti Ngata, and Brodrick Bunkley) will all be gone. The next teir of defensive linemen is somewhat sparse, as I see Mathias Kiwanuka, Gabe Watson, Tamba Hali, Manny Lawson, and Kamerion Wimberly. So if that is your need then you better go get them before they're gone.

Yes, I too feel that this draft has some decent talent after the so-called "blue chippers", but a vast majority of those players are Linebackers and Defensive Backs. Which, in my opinion, works perfectly for the Cowboys because that is what they need. I say keep on trading back and gathering picks, as long as we don't fall far enough back that we loose that quality LB or DB.

Certainly I agree with you. I think my preference would be to slide down a few slots and still get a Carpenter/Wimbley type. I realize we have to have a partner and this article paints a picture that that could be difficult to obtain.

I have ZERO problems with taking someone at #18 that it can be argues is the BPA. I mean BPA is a bit of a misnomer (sp?) IMO. At #18 it is unlikely there will be a single player who is the BPA but, more likely there is group of players to pick from that could all be called BPAs.

In the end like you said as long as we don't reach and make solid picks wherever they may be, I will be happy.

I wouldn't mind if Cromatrie fell to 18, we stay pat, and select him, then select Alabama DE Mark Anderson in the 2nd round

Nice work on the recap...

Unless a top-tier player begins to slide, I'm hoping we move down...

Does Norm no longer broadcast in the Metroplex area? Was he on medication that contains warning labels about driving at the same time?

Any other rational explanation?
