View Full Version : Gun Owners: Opinions on the XD .45?

I have been thinking of getting the Springfield Armory XD .45 for a few months now but I have yet to shoot one. I held one and liked how it felt, but it was unloaded at the time.

I have heard nothing but good things about this gun and it does not hurt to have the free accessories that are included with it.

Anyone here own one or shoot one? What do you think of it? Is it worth the $480 or should I wait for the price to possibly drop when the craze over this gun drops.

Never shot one. I have a Sig P220 (.45 cal) and it's a sweet gun. My dad calls it the "cadillac of hand guns."

I'm probably gonna raffle it off soon though. I don't fire it very often. Probably used it for a total of 10 hours and I've had it about 10 years. I want to raffle it off and buy myself a Desert Eagle. I figure if I'm not gonna shoot that often, might as well have a more "exotic" gun.

This is the one I plan on getting...

Ahh, a D eagle. My friend has a .50 D eagle and that thing is just filthy. Freaking hand cannon.

That and my Colt Single Action Army feel like the fingers of God pointing.

:lmao2:

Yeah I figure I'll have to mount the darn thing to a tank before I actually fire it. :D

I would have the gun already if I wasn't so lazy about going to get the raffle tickets printed out for my sig.

Are you donating it to a raffle?? What is the story with that? The problem with the D eagle is the freaking cost of ammo. You can get it at good prices online, but I was forced to buy it at my local indoor range at $38 for a box of 20.

Not "donating" it. Just gonna hold the raffle. Proceeds go directly to me. :D

I don't think people will mind paying $15 for the chance to win an $800 gun.

And about the ammo, yeah it's expensive, but I rarely ever go shoot. I have like 3 boxes of ammo for my gun (also included in the raffle!) that I've had for years. I was at a ranch about a year ago and I shot the gun then. Before that it had been about 5 years or more since I shot it. It's still basically a new gun.

I own a Sig P226. Love it. Smooth recoil, and I always get a good grouping from 25yds out.

I have the Sig P220 as well and I love it. It's the best .45 I've ever shot. But I love Sigs in general, so maybe I'm biased.

That Eagle looks pimp-licious! :D

He still prefers his Glock, but he did say that he likes the ambidextrous clip release and the weight of the gun. Other than that, I got nothing.

I had a Colt. .45 auto that I traded my brother for his computer and gave it to my kids. That was a nice gun.

I still prefer wheel guns. They never misfire and are easy to clean. Besides they look old west.

At one time I drove a 113 and had to go out and provide medical support for tankers when they were doing there qualifications.

The best things about tanks, where you could put your MRE on the tank exhaust for a few seconds and then have a hot meal lol

Back on topic...

I think I will try to persuade my wife's grandfather to sell or give me his Luger he got in WWII.

I am really not a gun person, always perferred knives but I would like to have that gun.

Calico. You can't beat the price for this pistol. Especially with the accessories. It is a solidly built pistol (croatia) and not real finicky about shootin' dirty. You don't have to keep it real clean and still maintain reliability. The Glocks are the same kind of weapon. Drag 'em through the mud and drown them in a river and they'll still fire. Very basic in it's design and manufacture, but works every time. I think this is why most law enforcement personnell prefer them.
The XD is a polymer frame so the recoil is gonna be a little more than say that of the 1911 model .45 ACP. However the .45 ACP ammo is more of a "push" when fired as opposed to a sharp retort of the .40 auto or the 9mm stuff.

I don't know what kind of a shooter you are but this gun will hold a decent pattern for you. Decent enough for target plinkin' and excellent for home defense. Let me put it to you this way.... This gun will shoot as good as you do. The break down is simple. I've heard of no misfires and/or stove piping shells after several hundred rounds.
The Price will not go down. $480.00 is a steal for just about any Springfield IMO. I'm trying my best to get one soon, before the price goes up.
If you're wanting one and can afford it I would recommend it. The price will do nothing but go up. Everyone wants the polymer stuff these days.
Hell, I still love blasting my old smoke pole. Nothing like loading powder, patch and ball then tamping with the ram rod and blasting 180 grain of .50 cal lead.
Nothing like black powder shootin'!!!

Thank you for that response...that was more than I could have asked for.

This would be my first semi-auto to own. I own a couple of revolvers (S&W .357 and a Colt SA .45) and a shot gun.

I have shot several semiautos before (9mm .40, .45, .50), but not as much as the revolvers.

I don't have the money for one right now, but my tax return will give me more than enough.

I think I might treat myself to an XP .45 in few weeks :shoot1:

EDIT:

Have you heard about the problems with the mags recently? Several forums have owners complaining that the mags warp after about 1500 rounds and have to be pulled out...this also leads to stove piping and fails to fire. At first Springfield armory replaced the mags for free, but now they are looking into it.

Maybe all that .45acp in there might be a little too much for it.

Here is a link to one of the forums where it is reported

Calico. Haven't heard of that.........Ever. Wonder if it was 1500 rds in the same shoot.(probably) Kind of seems insane but there are people who don't mind wasting half a paycheck on ammo....;) for one outing. First I would wonder what kind of ammo they were shooting. It really does make a difference. Some are "hotter" than others especially if you load your own stuff. Secondly, was it brass doing the stove piping or an aluminum casing. Can't always blame the clip either. The ejector could use some fine tuning if your gonna shoot 1500 rds. in an outing. It could be the spring mechanism inside the clip. Are they jamming the clip full of .45ACP's with every shoot with the extra in the pipe.. Lotsa questions here. Easy fix ,all of them. Either way it doesn't seem that you'll be blastin' 1000+ rounds in a shoot so I seriously doubt you'll ever see this.
I have a Ruger .40 cal that will NOT shoot brass. I can run CCI aluminum casings(fmj) thru it all day. Rugers(semi-autos) are thee most finicky gun made but cannot beat the quality.

I don't want to confuse you or make you shy away from the pistol. Most semi-autos will have some form of minor defect. Even the Kimber customs at $1000.00 to $2000.00 range may need a tweak or two. Maybe not the one you buy but it could be the next guy's. The manufacturers are very good with fixing and/or replacing defects for free. If this clip turns out to be the culpruit I'd find it very likely they'd take care of you. Never had a problem.
Here's another avenue. You could purchase off brand clips which could run you about 25.00-45.00 per for a 13 rd. clip. They're usually made better. Can find them at a gun show or thru a gun based website. I like http://www.cheaperthandirt.com. Give that a try. It may be a few months before you see the aftermarket clips.
Also try http://www.J&Gsales.com for your ammo purchase. They have the best prices. Located in Prescott, AZ. No need for an FFL to buy ammo and have it shipped.

I hope I made sense. Problem is I can't type as fast as I think.

Now off to the website you gave me.................

P.S.

I'm still gettin' one.:D

I have to hate you for at least a week. What is it? I have to know. There was an armory in Russia called Tula. They made almost all the Russian military weapons for years. They closed their doors in 1986 and no more guns are being made by Tula.

Towards the end of their existence they specialized in very fancy guns. I was looking for a website that showed some of their guns, but I can't find the bookmark. There's a shotgun called the Model 34 that is very close to the one I have which is a Model 91. They only made 8 before the doors closed forever.

Mine has never even been loaded. There are no shell marks.

It is a 12 gauge double barrell over/under that is so light you can't believe it. The stock has a hand carved elk on it. The whole wood area is handcarved and has silver inlay. The works have silver inlay geese and the dual triggers are brass.

On the underside of the works by the triggers you can see the signatureof the 2 Russian craftsmen who did the work along with the Tula crest.

http://home.tula.net/toz/toz.gif

Maybe I'll take some pictures and post them. It's a beautiful gun.

That's awesome Hos. It sounds absolutely beautiful. I've never heard of Tula. I'm assuming it's a break open single shot chokeless. But I bet ya you could set the first trigger and fire both with the pull of the inner trigger. If you like lying on your back that is. Very, very nice . Whenever you get the time and feel like posting some pictures I would appreciate that. I would love to see that piece of art. I'd like to show them to my Dad.

I've got a WWII German Mauser, 8MM, manufactured in siberia in 1945. Test fired once. It's in collectors condition (I'm itching to fire that rascal.) It's got matching serial numbers on the receiver, the bolt and the barrel. Stainless butt plate, bent bolt for a scope, an ammo pouch to hold about 100 rds with stripper clips, an oiler can, cleaning kit and strap. Not nearly the worth of your Tula prize, but that's the best I can do. :)

:eek:Yes, I've lost 20 pounds since January 1. My goal is my playing weight of 225. Got a ways to go. I rebuilt my weight room and am lifting again and am going to swim laps every day in the pool for cardio since my knees won't let me run. I started the laps last night.

My inspiration, my oldest daughter just turned 13 in February and boys are noticing her. I need to be scarier. I made a goal of 400 on the bench by the time she turns 16.

That is a riot.

That is a niiiiiice shotgun. I am basically doing the same stuff you are in my weight loss routine. I blew out one of my knees in high school ball and it has always given me problems and I seem to be the only at 26 with a knee like mine.

Too many years in college of drinking and fast food need to be shed.

All you need to do is have that shot gun out for a cleaning when the guys come over...especially if she brings home a college guy at that age...it happens.

The boy only needs to go shoot with me one time and he will be a perfect gentleman. The last time we went I hit 30 in a row.

If the guns don't scare him the compound bow or crossbow might.

Luckily for me my daughter is already giving them a head start. A boy asked her out to the school dance earlier this year. Her response, "have you seen my Dad?"

I was so proud of her.

What a find my friend. WOW, is about all I can muster up at this point.
Other than some royalty owned musket from the mid 1700's thats
the most intricate work I've ever seen on a long gun before. Man oh man is that a thing of beauty. Not only that, it fits you man. Know what I mean?
If I was holding it, it just wouldn't work.

I may be wrong, but from the pictures the triggers look to me like they've been anodized with gold.
