What's going on this weekend?
Rookies coming in. No vets. No pads. Mostly orientations and going over rules and expectations.
What do you look for in a football player?
I want someone who is dependable, reliable, well conditioned, mentally tough and willing to do whatever it takes to win.
Have you had much interaction with TO?
Not much; not too worried about him being conditioned. My concern is that this will be the first time in his life he hasn't been in a West Coast offense. We're planning on spending several days with him going over the playbook.
What will win the division?
Defense and QB play. Lost 3 games last year because of the kicker, not expecting that this year.
What about Carpenter?
Ideal size for a OLB. Most guys that size in college are DE's. He won't have to learn a new position. He can play ILB or OLB. Very versatile. Very competetive. Football family, loves the game.
Why the tight end Fasano?
It's easier for teams to match up with the third WR than it is the second TE. Most teams have a good nickelback to cover a 3rd WR. LBs and Safetys have a really tough time covering guys like Witten and Fasano.
Akin Ayodele, underrated acquisition?
He will play weakside ILB. I expect him to have high tackle numbers. Teams usually don't run well to the weak side against the 3-4, so he should do well. He will play the same position Harry Carson played and he turned out allright.
(Had to drop my kid off at the babysitter. Sorry!)
Must've been a question about the RB position.
Expect Barber's role to be expanded. Julius has some trouble staying on the field (health wise) but he's working hard to improve that. Respects guys like Tiki who never leave the field.
Are you more comfortable with the safety position?
Yes. Satisfied with Coleman and Watkins. Don't discount Beriault. Our goal is to be a top 5 defense. We picked up a lot of young linemen the past 2 years.
Then he went on about the hall of fame inductions ceremony this year. I think Harry Carson is going in.
That's all I got. Had to go to work.

this morning. talked about TO, Carp, and the two TE set. all i could hear had to teach.
Yea I heard some bits of it but I had to come inside to work.
One of the main things he talked about was the reasoning behind selecting a TE of Witten's Caliber. He said that it is easier for teams to match up with a third WR; they have nickel backers and packages specifically for that purpose and unless the slot WR is exceptional then the advantage swings the Defense’s way. However, having a good TE that can beat LB/Safety coverage’s tend to be more of a problematic match up for the defense which is beneficial to the offense.
He also said that he laid out his plans for TO and TO has been doing all that he asked him to do. Another thing he mentioned is that TO has played in the West Coast Offense every since he has been in the league and he said it will be a huge transition for him to get acclimated to their system. To expedite things he said that he would take 8 - 10 days prior to mini-camps to allow him and Haley to drill TO pretty good on how their system works.
That’s all I caught of the Parcell’s interview however Carl Banks and Poppa had some very funny dialog going on about Haggan and Legrecor (sp). Carl said that Haggan is a cowboy hater through the bone and Legrecor is a cowboy lover to his core. He compared Legrecor to a little puppy that hasn’t seen his master and is brimming over with excitement and tinkles because he is so happy, lol. He said the mere mentioning of the cowboys makes Legrecker tail wag, makes him run in circle, and tinkle. I was busting up laughing so hard that I could have easily had a wreck driving in to work. He also had some funny stuff talking about how many times the Tuna cut him his rookie year. He said whenever coach got mad at him he told him he was cut, lol.
I wish Carl is on more because that guy has become my favorite sports personality.
Oh, hey, JFE, time to throw a hissy fit. Sirius got an interview before a local beat writer.
That must be embarrassing.

So Parcells does speak...Who'd a thunkit?
And the TO comments are interesting. Cuz he's right. He's been in a WC offense everywhere he's been, how much of an adjustment will it be for him?

Nice recap. I really like his commentary on Carpenter.
I like his comments on TO. (the first I have seen)
He is treating him like a man, like any other player, ... all business. He is only discussing what he needs to do to get better, trying to get him ready.
He is showing him what he wants him to do, and not focusing on what not to do.
He is not treating him like a primadonna or different like some teams have, or that he is a star and is great.
This is why Parcells has made it work with guys like B. Cox, K. Johnson, T. Glenn, LT, ... guys that some other teams avoided.

Not surprising. Sirius NFL Radio is more or less run by the NFL, with input from Sirius. While they can be hard on interviewees, they're probably going to throw more softballs than the local beat writers.

hopefully this along with the PC this afternoon will stop the media crying. personally, all I care about is that BP is working on getting the team ready to play.

Plus, Parcells was probabaly doing his old buddy Carl Banks a favor. :)
I wonder if he and Jim Burt will back to TC this year to help the new players with the 34 techniques. I'm sure it would help Carpenter, Ayodele, Stanley, and Hatcher.

I agree - Davis has a bigger impact on ST than at S. Plus, he's a solid backup for either S position should someone get injured.
Just thinking about it - our ST should be awesome this season :)

The thing that is going to stink about this first press conference will be is that it will be almost ALL TO. The media is so obsessed that I don't think they'll spend much time quizzing BP on other issues.

Agreed. Truth be told, I too have a different reason for wanting to hear BP speak .... I love to hear his thoughts about the players and football in general. He gets me excited about football.
The mediots want to try and trap him. They want to see if he says anything they can use against him. I want to root for Big Bill and the Boys. I want to see if I can figure out who is going to be his "pet" this year. We're never gonna know the direction of the team until they get on the field because BP is too paranoid to reveal anything.
I want to see if he has any knew Parcell-isms. You know, like "there's 2 sides to that pancake", and crap like that:laugh2:

Another option would be if they thought Watkins could be their 5th WR in a pinch.
But I agree that if Beriault is healthy that he makes the team over Coleman and they carry 4 with Davis backing up RW

I think BP will give a quick synapsis on TO. Then cut it off, and tell them to keep it on the rookies and mini-camp, or the team overall. We won't tolerate TO, TO, TO questions.

Thanks for the recap. I missed this, though I find myself constantly listening to the Sirius NFL channel. Pat Kirwin is probably my favorite on-air personailty on it.

This is an interesting sidebar to the drafting of Watkins. Some scouts actually thought Watkins would translate better to the NFL as a receiver.

Now watch ALL of the mediots start jumping on all of the problems TO will be having not playing in a WCO. Ugghh! It begins.
Also, I thought KD had something in his new contract about PT that we had to match?

Agree, Coleman is odd man out, and his contract pretty much says that too. He is just an insurance policy, for now, until someone doesn't step up.

i dont like the TO comment, he could have said that TO shouldn't have a hard time making the switch to a different type of offense, instead he takes the other route and says something negative, saying he's not sure how TO will handle the change of offense.

Seems like Bill Parcells decided to end his self-imposed silence a few hours earlier than his 4 p.m. news conference at Valley Ranch. Here's what he had to say about Terrell Owens earlier today on a satellite radio show hosted by Bob Papa and former Giants linebacker Carl Banks:
"I told him what I want him to do and so far he’s done that. And I really don’t worry about his conditioning too much because he’s pretty ardent at that. But the big thing with Terrell for us is he’s been in the West Coast offense his whole career with San Francisco and Philadelphia. Now we don’t run that, so he’s got a whole new offense to learn. So prior to mini-camp, probably for about 8 or 10 days, we’re going to have meetings with him with our position coach, Todd Haley. He’s going to meet with him and we’re going to take him out and get him through our offense and hopefully try to catch him up to speed because this will be a transition for him from an offensive standpoint.”
Sorry I see Bill stating facts not negitive or positive just fact. Fact is TO has not played in a offense other than the WCO (at least in the Pro's) and fact is for 8 to 10 days prior to mini camp they will work with TO to get him up to speed on the offense.

If Coleman is equal or slightly better than Beriault or Watkins, he's history. But if he's miles above them, then I think perhaps Beriault could possibly be back on the PS or something like that.
Or if we kept Beriault and Coleman on the roster, then Polite can kiss his butt good bye, or even maybe a 5th receiver can kiss it good bye.
