Longhorns' Taylor, suspended since March, arrested

AUSTIN -- Texas running back Ramonce Taylor (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=162414), who scored a touchdown in the Longhorns' Rose Bowl win over Southern California, was arrested early Sunday by Bell County sheriff's deputies who said they found about five pounds of marijuana in a backpack in his car.

According to a news release from Sheriff Dan Smith, deputies also found a live 40-caliber round of ammunition in the console of the vehicle.

Taylor, 20, was arrested for possession of marijuana over five pounds, a second-degree felony, punishable by two to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.

The case was to be reviewed by District Attorney Henry Garza's office Sunday to decide if formal charges would be filed, the sheriff's office said. Taylor remained in the Bell County Jail and would be arraigned Monday.

Taylor had been excused from spring practice in March to focus on academics and had not participated in any team functions since then, Longhorns Mack Brown (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=177819) said in a statement released by the school.

"We are aware of this recent situation and will follow it as the legal system runs its course. At this time, we will not consider reinstating him to the team," Brown said.

It was not immediately clear if Taylor had an attorney.

Ken Oden, an Austin attorney who represented Taylor in a December assault investigation -- Taylor wasn't charged -- told the Austin American-Statesman the player's mother told him about the arrest. Oden said he suggested hiring a lawyer in Bell County.

"She's just trying to figure things out," Oden said.

According to the sheriff, deputies received a report at 1:35 a.m. Sunday of a large fight involving as many as 100 people at a pecan farm in Little River, a community about 40 miles north of Austin.

Deputies also received a call from someone who said they had been at the fight and complained a window on his vehicle had been broken. That caller turned out to be Taylor.

While interviewing Taylor at a convenience store, deputies were told by other officers at the fight scene that Taylor had been involved and had threatened to return with a gun. Taylor was placed in handcuffs.

Taylor told deputies he didn't have a gun and gave them permission to search his vehicle. Deputies reported finding the bullet and the backpack with the marijuana. Deputies said the backpack belonged to Taylor.

Taylor was arrested and his vehicle impounded. Two other individuals with him, who were not named in the report, were released at the scene.

An operator at the sheriff's office said Smith would not have further comment Sunday and that no other information was available.

One of Texas' most versatile players, Taylor scored 15 touchdowns last season, including a 30-yard scoring run in the Rose Bowl, which Texas won 41-38. The win gave Texas its first outright national championship since 1969.

We played this guy. Went to Belton High. Took himself out of Belton's playoff game, and ultimately cost his team the game. Our coach still uses him as an example of what we can't have on OUR team. I will say, hes amazing football player. Too bad his career ended right there it seems.

I'll go a little farther into it. Belton High School has had one state playoff appearance the last 15 years. His senior year. The guy was crazy good. Shredded our defense for 350 yards!! And RETURNED an INT for a touchdown, and THREW a touchdown. I promise you guys im not exagerating. And don't think we're some cupcake team, we're perennial district champions. Then a bunch of us went to watch their playoff game, and we witness the most selfish act, I, at least have ever seen. Belton is losing in the third quarter by two TDs, and they're forced to pass. Romance gets in the coaches face about not getting the ball, and pulls himself out. Literally sits out the rest of the game. Thats not even talking about his being suspended from the team two different times during his time there.

Now, when our coach is talking of uniting and putting the team before ourselves, he EVERYTIME refers to that "player who played down the road from us, a couple years ago" and tells the story of him pulling himself out.

People can say what you want about marijuanna legalization, but when I read stories like this I think its Darwinism at work. The same goes for anyone who drives 15 miles over the speed limit at night with an expired inspection sticker with 500 lbs. of weed in the back of their van. There are some people who are just too stupid for their own good, and for whatever reason the drug trade seems to attract them like flies to honey. I don't really care if people smoke marijuanna, I'm just glad people like that are not on the streets and breeding.

I'm just kidding but its not entirely impossible that someone could have busted out his window and stuffed the marijuana in his backpack. Again.. just throwing out an idea... I'm not making any kind of attempt to defend the guy.

An article with slightly more info:

UT's Taylor charged with marijuana possession

08:57 PM CDT on Sunday, May 14, 2006

By CHIP BROWN / The Dallas Morning News
AUSTIN – The attorney for Texas running back Ramonce Taylor, the all-purpose yardage leader for the national champion Longhorns in 2005, said roughly five pounds of marijuana found in Taylor's car early Sunday didn't belong to Taylor.

The Bell County district attorney's office charged Taylor with state jail felony possession of marijuana Sunday night, pending a final lab analysis for the total weight of the drugs.

If convicted, Taylor could face up to two years in jail and a $10,000 fine. If the weight exceeds five pounds, the charge could be upgraded to a second-degree felony, punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Taylor will be arraigned today, when bail will be set.

Deputies said they found an unfired .40 caliber bullet in the center console of Taylor's vehicle. They said while searching the rear of the vehicle they also found a backpack with the marijuana in it. According to a news release from the Bell County sheriff's department, "further investigation indicates the backpack belongs to Ramonce Taylor."

Taylor's attorney, Buck Harris of Killeen, said Taylor would never have been charged if Taylor hadn't called 911 at about 1:30 a.m. to report the back window of his sports utility vehicle being broken out while leaving a party. Harris said there were three other people in the car with Taylor when authorities found the marijuana in the back of Taylor's Chevrolet Tahoe. The identities of the others weren't immediately known.

"More information will be forthcoming about whom the marijuana belonged to, but it didn't belong to Ramonce," Harris said.

"Rarely do people who have large quantities of controlled substance call the police and or offer the right for them to search their car," Harris said. "Generally the last person you want to see at that point is an officer searching your vehicle. I'm not trying to beg the question, I'm just trying to say, this is not a routine traffic stop."

Taylor totaled 15 touchdowns last season, including a score in Texas' 41-38 victory over USC in the Rose Bowl. He had been excused from the team during the spring semester to work on his academics.

"We are aware of this recent situation and will follow it as the legal system runs its course," coach Mack Brown said in a statement released Sunday.

"At this time, we will not consider reinstating him to the team."

According to the Bell County sheriff's office, deputies received a report of a fight involving as many as 100 people at a pecan farm on Highway 95 in Little River.

Authorities said they were told by witnesses at the scene that Taylor was involved in the fight and had threatened to return with a firearm. Harris said Taylor was the target of racial slurs and left the party without fighting, only to have his car's window broken out.

After deputies responded to Taylor's 911 call, he was handcuffed in the parking lot of the Cefco Convenience Store in Academy, two miles from Little River. Taylor granted the deputies' request to search his vehicle, authorities said, adding that Taylor was totally cooperative.

Harris said Taylor was in Austin on Saturday studying for a final at Texas today when he headed home to see his mother, Ramona Clark, a former state prison guard, for Mother's Day.

Taylor and former Texas cornerback Cedric Griffin were the subjects of a criminal investigation by the Austin Police Department in December. Police looked into whether Taylor and Griffin were involved in an alleged assault in Austin's Sixth Street entertainment district on Dec. 10, 2005. No charges were filed in that case.
