If Notre Dame has a huge year – and I think the Irish will – and Parcells leaves, then I would expect the Cowboys to call Weis and gauge his interest. He may have none or he might want to coach the NFL’s most visible team. Although he has a long-term contract, any coach can get out of his deal, if he wants to leave. It happens all the time. He would be a great choice because he would keep the same principles in place that Parcells has established. The question is whether he and Jones could make it work.
If Dallas wins the super bowl, I could see Parcells retiring at the press conference. If they are close, say they get to the NFC Championship and lose{no wayyyy} then he probably would come back for one more crack at it. Still I think Weis would be the best choice outside of Parcells himself. What do you guys think?

This is ideal. Weiss told Fasano that he and Bill are basically the same coach, but that Parcells is older.

Not happening. For the umpteenth time, Weis isn't leaving ND anytime soon. He's rebuilding a dynasty in South Bend and in the process might earn Sainthood there. ;) Will he leave ND at some point? Maybe. But not anytime soon. End of discussion.

Like a vampire, killing this thing is pretty hard to do. Its been explained ad nauseum that the new contract extension would require a HUGE buyout for him to leave anytime soon- in the vicinity of $15 million. Not even Snyder is that dumb.

Weis is now getting around $4 million a year at ND. The whole package was a 10 year, $40 million dollar deal. USUALLY, the buyout is around 1/3 of the total package. RUMOR was that this one was a little bigger: it was SPECIFICALLY designed to prevent Weis leaving early for the NFL. That was what White, the AD at ND said when it was announced. ND has never actually publicised the actual $ totals, but all the rumors have it about the same.

I think Bill will coach as long as his health is good and he still has the passion for the game or to use his own words the fire is still there. As for the next coach will cross that bridge when the time comes, after all who knows who the next hot commondity in the coaching ranks will be at that time.

Al Groh is also a BP clone...VT and he has been there for awhile too....might be interested in moviing up. Wouldn't hurt my feelings at all to see him step in as HC, not at all.

Notre Dame Explains Weis Extension
Last Updated:

Notre Dame offered football coach Charlie Weis a better contract in the middle of his first season to keep NFL teams from pursuing him.
Athletic director Kevin White said the school had already received "overtures" from NFL teams, and he was convinced Weis "would have had a significant number of suitors at the end of the season" if he didn't take action.
"As the ultimate closet New York cynic, I wanted to make darn sure that we had it just the way it needed to be from a university's standpoint," White said Tuesday.
Notre Dame was 5-2 under Weis and ranked No. 9 when Weis signed a new 10-year contract in October that begins this season. He signed the new contract just 10 months after getting a six-year deal.
White said the original contract included a "pretty big buyout." He said the new deal has a "Herculean buyout."
Notre Dame finished last season 9-3 and ranked No. 9, its highest end-of-season ranking since 1993. Under Weis, quarterback Brady Quinn set many school passing records.
White declined to get into specifics of the contract, but conceded it is impossible to guarantee Weis, a longtime NFL assistant, won't someday leave for the pros, in part because NFL coaching salaries are escalating so fast.
"The resources that are at the next level are mind-boggling," he said.

Jimmy Johnson could win a super bowl with this core of players. I don't have that same confidence in Bill Parcells.

Groh is at UVA not VT.
Beamer is at Tech. Now Beamer's assistant Foster would be an intriguing choice for d coordinator. We surely need one of those.....
BTW Groh sux....
