Canty was a first round talent until his injuries. I think it's pretty much equal. Spears is a beast, though. He might win on raw power.

no, he lacks the burst and the 3-4 will kill his ability to really be a game breaker like many other DEs (strahan, peppers, formerly kearse etc.)

Spears...It's no contest, imo....Canty was the bigger steal of the draft because we got him in the fourth round, but while he was talked about as a first round talent, it would have been the bottom of round 1 at best, and likely the 3rd because there simply is not that much call for guys like Canty outside of the 3-4. The same can be said to an extent for Spears because he was not a huge sack guy in college, but Spears has the superior athleticism.

Canty will be a good one, but Spears may turn out to be a beast.

flip-flop these two statements and i'm on-board. i see spears as the every-down workhorse who will smother the run and provide the occasional pressure after hip-tossing a tackle. i like canty as a pass-rush specialist who will bat down balls ala ed jones and can run ya down from the backside - but will need LB support, at the point of attack, in the run game.

spears is stout enough to eventually see some DT duty. canty is edge all the way.

I think it's apples & oranges, really. It's like, who will be the better OLB, Ware or Carpenter? They play different positions, and have different assignments. Ware will get the limelight because, being on the weak side & being quicker, he will garner more sacks. Carpenter, on the other hand, will be a very good player on the other side by occupying the TE & moving around, creating havoc of his own.
