In reality… any grade of the 2004 draft is nothing but mere speculation… most players drafted don’t adjust to the NFL until around the third year in the league… basing the quality of a draft on highlight reels from college play is not good basis for a legitimate grade…
We should be grading the 2001 draft… so here it is…
Round 1:
No pick
Round 2:
#53. Quincy Carter
#56. Tony Dixon
Round 3:
#93. Willie Blade
Round 4:
#122. Markus Steele
Round 5:
#137. Matt Lehr
Round 6:
#171. Daleroy Stewart
Round 7:
#207. Colston Weatherington
#240. John Nix

And how many of those players are still currently on the team?

I was thinking it looked very much like 2001. If 2001 was any indication, most of the players stuck, that would make this more paletable. But, I would very much doubt that we keep 3 CB's on the roster.

I believe that would be 6.

Well... I contemplated a C-... here is my reasoning...
Round 1:
No pick
I admit this factored in to my grade...
Round 2:
#53. Quincy Carter
#56. Tony Dixon
With the pick-up of Henson... you have to think Dallas has no plans for Q as the starter in the future... Dixon is an also-ran thus far... you HAVE to get starters in Round 2...
Round 3:
#93. Willie Blade
Excellent pick...
Round 4:
#122. Markus Steele
Mainly a special teams guy...
Round 5:
#137. Matt Lehr
Good value pick...
Round 6:
#171. Daleroy Stewart
A spare thus far...
Round 7:
#207. Colston Weatherington
#240. John Nix
I think Weaterington is back on our practice squad... showed a thing or two at times...
Nix was with the Cleveland Campo's last year...
Outside of the lack of a pick in the first round... you should at least have later round picks producing on special teams... thus my grade... I grade hard... my mom is a teacher...

C+ at the very worst IMHO. No first rounder cause of JG trade hurt but we got a starting QB in round 2. Lehr and Blade also both started last year. Dixon and Steele are depth and special teamers. Daleroy was a rotation guy at DT. Thats a lot of contributors to a playoff team.
It was also a F on draft day. In fact it was universally thought that Steele was the best selection and he cant touch the starting lineup.

yeah... I have been dissappointed with Steele to be honest... and as I said... I am figuring the lack of a pick in round 1 into the mix... it makes a difference...
Lehr will end up being a serviceable back-up... he WAS a good value pick... Blade was our BEST value in the draft... Dixon is a bust thus far... and Q will end up being a back-up in time...
You HAVE to get value out of your 2's...

I think that it is fair to judge the 2002 draft as well. Just not the players that havent started yet.

Well... points can be made to that effect Eagle fan... but most players don't "get it" until 3 years or so... you guys picked up Shepherd, Lewis, Brown, Westbrook, Peters, Milons, Harrison, Brock... in the '02 draft... how would you grade it?
Some guys emerge quicker than others... 3 years is a good rule of thumb...
Your 1's and 2's should be quick-start impact players... 3's and 4's should be contributors and special teams players... you can get some good starters here at times... 5-7 are your project players, special teamers, fill-ins and depth guys.... true you can get solid starters here... but not normally...

Any 7th rounder makes the team at all you have to be happy. Carter's performed well at times and a lot of his inconsistent play over the course of his career can be blamed on the Cowboys. If #1 pick Carson Palmer can sit for a year, why not Carter. Lehr was great value and he still brings good depth. 4th round was a little high for a special teams player, but Steele has been a standout there. And Stewart seemed to have some real potential, we'll find out for sure this season.
B- overall. Compared to a C at best this year, as of right now.

This time next year that 2001 class will not be well represented. Quincy Carter and Willie Blade (maybe Steele or Lehr) could be all that is left. Based on that my grade is a D. Add a disaster in the Joey Galloway trade and

Damn that's no fun.
Overall a B+, 7th rounders are a wash 90% of the time
Carter = B+ ( in the LATE 2nd because no matter what you say or think he was our QB the entire 10-6 season and into the play-offs... without a RB, #1 WR or a quality Oline.)

We cant be sure what will be what this time next year. Remember if QC plays solidly this year we could very well get a pick in return for him. Dallas will have some say in where he ends up.
Blade, Steele, Dixon, Stewart, Lehr should all remain on the squad as depth guys.
Not at all sexy but a lot of NFL players who contribute. D drafts have only 1 or 2 guys who can make your roster after 3 years. Pick another team and compare. I'd suggest choosing Oakland as they took a QB in round 2 as well so thats a fair comparison.

Does trading Galloway for Keyshawn add any value to the 2001 draft?
