View Full Version : T.O. and the kid with the Eagles hat
Dude, that was some good stuff. I'll repost Tanin's firsthand account:
"When T.O. was running the drill with us, he spotted a kid with a Philly Eagle hat and with an irritated look on his face said-"Man, why you wearin' that out here?!" he then yanked the hat off his head and crumpled it up, throwing it on the field. But he did give the kid a new hat, the T.O. camp hat. After he was finished with us and wanted to move on into the little kid group, he kicked the eagle hat and said-"Kick that hat off the field!" I have to say it was pretty funny when he did that."
Good stuff. Something else I saw that the articles I read didn't mention: When TO was throwing passes to the younger kids, the kid he chastised by saying "I bet if that was a pizza you would have caught it!" was a pudgy kid who was in tears after Owens said that to him. Right after the comment Rosenhaus, fanny kisser that he is, said "Ha Ha! Good one, buddy!" What a dink.

Yeah... too many athletes (not just TO) are arrogant jerks in person. I guess that's what happens when you're a millionaire that women swoon over and you lead Sportscenter 47 times in a 6 week period.

Well, we all knew he wasn't brought here to encourage overweight kids. I don't think he was right in saying it, but it was ribbing. But still not something you say to a chunky child, even though he absolutely would have caught the pizza. The last thing anyone should expect him to do is turn into Mister Politically Correct.

The Eagle hat was funny to me and atleast T.O. gave him a new hat...but I didn't hear Terrel say that to that poor kid. I mean it was kinda funny when my dad first told me, but when I got to thinking, it really wasn't the right thing to say to a little kid. I mean, that's something you say to your friend not some kid you don't know...even if T.O. and his butt monkey Rosenhaus thought it was funny-it really isn't.

It's funny. The guys that are 'Superstars' always tend to act like jerks. Does superstardom MAKE you a jerk or are jerks the only ones selfish enough to attention-whore their way to superstardom?
Example: I've met and talked with Daryl Johnston, Tim McDonald, Steve Tasker, Larry Brown, Zuriel Smith, Ray Crockett, Warrick Dunn and Brett Favre. ALL of those guys were completely cool, approachable and friendly. (I met Favre back in 94 though...he wasn't a 'Superstar' yet)
I've also met and talked with Michael Irvin, Deion Sanders, Andre Rison, Howie Long and Terrell Owens. They were all jerks.
Hmmm....

If Drew Henson is serious about being the future of the Cowboys franchise his strategy should be obvious: Dye his hair dark brown, wear brown contact lenses and change his name to Drew Ensonelli. Parcells would immediately anoint him as Bledsoe's successor.

you must be each or most of the following to play on a Parcells team:

3) from New York or New Jersey

Yeah. But it does tear at the ole heartstrings a little. Especially considering it's probably the kids parents fault he's chubby, and not his own.
But as guys, I think we all know that if you have ANY defiency - it is going to be picked on unmercifully in any sports related activities - by coaches and teammates alike. It's part of growing up, and it helps thicken the skin. My head was too big for my body for 10 years. You don't think I heard plenty about that?

Chunky children are a nationwide epidemic. And that blame does go to the parents. It isn't just all genetics anymore. If you are going to ask your child be athletic, make sure they eat right. And turn the television off, hide the box of Twinkies and do your job.

Well, I was never in that situation, lol. A girl I really liked once made fun of my head, but I learned to laugh that stuff off.
It hurt, and like I said, that was something I had absolutely no control over, just as this kid is probably the product of his parents upbringing - not really something you can control either.
It was in poor taste - no doubt. I just don't think it should be all that surprising, at a football camp. It was definitely thoughtless, and hurtful, but that's pretty much what my childhood was all about. When you've got 5 uncles and 5 older male cousins, you're gonna be the brunt of alot of jokes. Now that I'm older, I can appreciate what that did for me. Maybe the kid will benefit, maybe he'll just hate TO. I dunno. I wouldn't have said it to a kid I don't know, but I say stuff just as insulting to my 10 year old brother and his friends whenever I take them to the park and play a pickup game.

Damn str8. My parents would lock me out of the house when I came home from school. Which led to my friends and I developing games like "apple-fight" in the orchards, "brick-fight" in the abandoned sheds, and "corn cob fight" in the neighbors feed barn.

You don't understand. The camp advertised itself as a camp for players at ALL positions. Yes, a WR was the name on the camp but there were all diff coaches there for all diff positions. That said, they made all the kids do all the drills for all the positions. If it had been a WR's only camp then the chunky kid might be kind of asking for it. He was there to brush up on O-line stuff, though.

What I think is just smashing is that the private conversations between Owens and Rosenhaus (or just Rosenhaus) have been scrutized in these reports.
Rosenhaus and Owens laughed at the overweight child, Rosenhaus isn't a sensitive boyfriend and wasn't in tears about a girlfriend's kidney infection, etc.
I am sure if I eavesdropped on someone, I'd catch some politically incorrect comment out of them eventually. And the chances would increase exponentially if I were bird-dogging a known jerk, which both probably are. Why the shock and amazement?

When I played baseball in jr. high (catcher and first base), I had a football coach ask me one time if I was pregnant when I was coming out of the shower, because I was a little fat around the belly. He did this in front of the team...and yeah, I was embarassed and pissed...
I took that as a slam, then thought to myself that maybe I was not eating right...so I corrected it and lost that weight, did sit-up, jumping jacks, and ran a lot....
The following year after baseball practice I was walking off the field heading to the locker room, and this football coach and some other kids that played football were out there...and this football got overthrown and it came bouncing my way. Well, I picked it up and threw it back to that coach as hard as I could throw and it hit the coach in the chest and bounced off....I told him, "what's wrong coach Johnson, your stomach made of rubber?"
He walked over to me and asked if I wanted to try out for the QB position because I threw the ball so good....I told him no thanks and walked away...never played football, but played baseball all through jr. high and high school...
Now, I CANNOT STAND BASEBALL! The strike during the World Series was all it took!!
But, all sports are mental, and nasty things are going to be said...but, that's how you grow up.
Either that, or you parents can name you "Sue"..

The cell phone call was private. The girlfriend conversation was private. I could eavesdrop on anyone when they didn't think I was paying attention and catch them saying something rude or inappropriate. But thanks for doing your due diligence to have your own low expectations met and share them with everyone.

He was sitting in public chatting away on his cell phone with other people sitting around him. If it was truly 'private' he would have gone up to the top row of bleachers where nobody was around. (If I don't want people to hear my conversations, I usually make sure nobody is within earshot). BTW, he did have other conversations he did indeed consider private earlier in the day. He made a point to walk away and be completely alone.
You can call it 'eavesdropping' if you like. I call it 'Sitting there watching the kids while this guy chatters away on his cell phone while sitting 6 feet in front of me.' You couldn't NOT hear him!

I feel sorry for any kid that is obese or even overweight at the age of seven years old. I was lucky in that I was born with a naturally thin frame, but there's really no excuse for letting a 7 year old kid to get out of shape.
Unfortunately, the kid isn't out of shape because he's just lazy, his parents have probably done very little to help the kid out. Alexander is right, it's an epidemic. I watch my own neice with her petruding gut because all she will eat is fried chicken fingers and my sister and brother in law don't force her to eat foods with good nutritional value.
What Owens did was give some tough love to the kid. Hell, I had coaches say a lot worse things to me at around the same age....and one of the coaches happened to be my father. I think the big difference was....and in my father's case especially....is that they would eventually take the player aside and tell them why they are riding the kid. Unfortunately when Owens brought the kid to tears, he didn't do that.
It wasn't the worst thing in the world and for the most part, I don't think he really crossed the line. Unfortunately the coaching staff should probably realize that this overweight kid probably has never had tough love brought on him before and may not be able to handle it.
But, if this kid ever wants to play football on any higher level (or just about any sport for that matter), he'd better be equipped to deal with this type of criticism.

First, each of the kids had to pay to be in that camp. So the kid paid for that treatment.
Second, the other coaches seem to be fine going through the day without reducing this kid to tears.
Third, the pics submitted by members, the presence of Rosenhaus and the reaction of the children made it abundantly clear who this camp was promoted by and shilling for. Terrell Owens.
Not only was the comment uncalled for, but there is a necessity and expectation for public decency and behavior towards young children. Especially when children have paid for a service.
Now how much of this being true, the kid crying over the comment, if it did occur I wouldn't be too happy about his actions.
This reminds me alot of the Simpsons episode where Bart and Lisa sign up for Camp Krusty and don't see Krusty the Klown for the entire camp. Krusty ends up taking the kids to Tijuana.
In this case I would suggest that PR Kim and personal mouthpiece Rosenhaus consider other venues for Owens to present his public image.
If this is all true.

there's no cryin' in football (or baseball)... maybe the kid will take that comment (if it was even said at all) and use it as motivation to change his path. (either that or maybe an animal house repeat will air unedited "short fat and stuipid is... ")

...does he have to pay for that criticism?
I think some of you know that this year I decided to do some volunteer coaching for a fledgling football team in our town.
One of the problems I noticed was that the majority of the kids who joined were not the very best of athletes. All the hockey players were told to stay away from our mini camp because they could get seriously hurt in peewee football and thus jeopardize their NHL hockey careers. ( I got a real kick out of that one.)
Well, in the end what did we get to join the team. Alot of good kids, some athletic and definitely some who have been marginalized because they are not going to be the next Wayne Gretzky.
It became abundantly clear that we needed these kids and like you have inferred, these kids need some form of exercise and team participation. There's no benefit to having less athletic kids drop out.
Building up their self esteem and having them commit to physical fitness and learning to function within a team is a good thing - much of what football is able to offer them. That good can only be served with keeping the kid interested in football.
I'm not sure how good denigrating a 7 year old child is going to be helpful in keeping his or her interest in sports?
If this is all true.
I wish some of it weren't. I was hoping that Owens was...I don't know. A better guy.

He wouldn't be able to because the kid would have been carted off in an ambulance after the Eagle fan parents kicked the crap out of said kid.

bingo.
probalby wouldn't send them even if they liked the player... just what we don't need is more idol worshiping by young kids .

Should any of us really be surprised by this? No, probably not.
But that doesn't mean you are wrong in finding him to be a jerk.
We can criticise him all we want. He won't change. And neither will Rosenhaus. We now have to deal with it.
That being said, if T.O. were to go down with a season ending injury, I would feel sorry for our team and the lost opportunity we had.
But not for T.O.
------
As for the overweigth kid....that is truly sad. It doesn't matter if its true or not (the kid being fat), he is SEVEN. And T.O. is an adult. Well, he is supposed to be one.
That's pathetic.
Yes, the kid probably gets heckled by his friends...but for an adult to heckle a kid, especially one who is 7, says a lot about Owens' character.
And I am not surprised by Rosenhaus' reply either. I am surprised he came up for air to say that (from being on Owens' dick)
-----------
Bottom line is; I hope we win.
I hope Owens behaves.
But I won't be holding my breath.

Here is Max Engle's account. He didn't mention the tears or anything.
"He gave instructions on running routes to the older group, and playfully interacted. At one point, he took an Eagles hat off a youngster's head and said, "I just converted you from an Eagles fan to a Cowboys fan."
He threw passes to giddy campers as parents took pictures, shot video with camcorders or recorded images with cellphone cameras.
He playfully chided one youngster who didn't come up with a catch, "I betcha, if that was a pizza, you woulda caught it!"
By 5:45, even the happiest and most content campers looked spent. They had been under the sun since 9 a.m.
A group gathered around T.O. for some words of inspiration.
"You can be anything you want to be," he said. "It starts at home listening to your parents. Do well in school. Do that, and you can buy as many things as you want."
Then, just before the huddle broke, he said, "If you had a good time say, 'T.O.'"
Less than a second later, the kids screamed, "T.O.""

Hmmm....
Howie Long is a jerk?
My whole world is crashing down around me. :(

There were two separate incidents. The first was a 12 year old kid with an Eagles hat. TO was clowning around, the kid was smiling and got a free TO hat out of it.
The second incident was with a chunky 7 year old kid. He missed a pass and TO made the pizza comment. The 7 year old kid was the one crying.
The issue with the hat doesn't seem like a big deal. Just joking around. The deal with the other kid is a little deeper. Doesn't sound like TO meant many people to hear him, so that's what he really felt. Great self-esteem builder for the kid... Maybe he'll take that comment and build on it by eating better and having a long, healthy life.
