Remember this patch? I think the Cowboys should bring it back for a game or two this season. It's about as classy as it gets.

is that the same game Randall fumbled the snap, and picked it up to throw a TD strike to Rocket?

Man, why you got to put that disgrace of QB that wore cowboys uniform, with Tom Landry's emblem :)

Honoring the cornerstone of the franchise with something as small as a patch is NEVER passe.

And then what?
We honor Jerry with the the logo of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons?
We honor Parcells with a fat belly patch?
Honor Michael Irvin with a razor and rolled up dollar bill patch?
You honor someone for a short period and then move on. Otherwise the uniforms start to look like NASCAR.

I'd hope all of those folks would understand that Tom Landry was 1,000x more important to the franchise than they were. The Bears have honored George Halas numerous times on their jerseys. I don't see why we can't do the same for arguably the best coach in NFL history.

What long term patch do they wear that you don't like?

I understand that.
But we have the freaking ring of honor.
How many way do you need to honor someone?

I don't think a small patch one or two games a season every 6 or 7 years is excessive. Just a small reminder of the man who gave 29 years of his life to the Cowboys to everybody who recognizes it. Personally, I don't think you can honor Landry enough, and he is the only person I feel that way about.

Dude, you seem to know very little of happenings of the team in past years or 90s? You know that Randall famously sat down with minor injury right? I forget the game in which that happened, but the dude flat out joined cowboys for paycheck and didn't want any part of taking starters job that year.

and what exactly did the team do?
nuthin' as I recall.
could have been a chance to send a serious message to the young players. oh wait, we didn't have any good young players then anyway.

The Bears have had the GSH on their sleeves for about 20 years or so. They put in on their jersey the year after Halas died and it has been there ever since.

I'd like to see it again and I second your opinion of Landry. I'd even like to see it replace the nike signia. The fedora belongs on the jersey a hell of a lot more than a tennis shoe label. Don't hear people complaining of that.
Bring back the fedora!! Poll this thread, man!!!!!

Halas' influence on the team was frankly, more far-reaching. Halas played for the team WHILE owning the club. He coached for like 40 years and was the owner for 60+. Halas also developed many of the coaching techniques -- e.g. film analysis -- that are now used all over. Broadcasting games on the radio -- his idea. Revenue sharing to keep small market teams afloat? His idea.
Halas was like one of the most influential sports figures of the 1900's.
I love Landry, but he had nowhere near the influence that Halas did.

Landry had as much influence on the Dallas Cowboys as any one single person, and MORE than anyone currently with the team. I don't care whether they have a patch or not, but it is certainly not an outrageous idea, and I would put Landry's influence on the COWBOYS every bit on par with a George Halas.

Actually, that would not be correct. Halas' influence on his team was far deeper as he both coached and owned the team. He was simply involved in more aspects of the team than was Landry -- and for longer.

This may sound like a dumb question to some here...
But, when is Coach Landry's birthday?
If it's during the season it would be cool to see the patch on the jerseys during the game that is played on the week of his birthday.

Which was, ironically enough, the date of the Cowboys' season opener against the Chargers last year.
A game they seemingly won by... divine providence?

Could Gates' minor contract squabble a couple months earlier, which resulted in a fluke 1-game suspension which just so happened to line up with the Cowboys' game, have been Landry pulling strings from above?
We'll neeeeever know.

More likely it was the lasting imprint of Bobby Beathard. Holdouts were his specialty.

Are you even a Cowboys Fan?
You say "Let the past be the past"?
We're not talking about some assistant coach or a player that started for a few years.
Tom Landry IS the Cowboys Franchise!

What makes Halas very special is he is the founding father of the NFL, he started the whole thing with the American Football Association, which would later became the NFL.

True fans can be critical. Perhaps you should ask your self why you aren't confident enough in your own status as a fan to ask the same questions.

I would not be opposed to a patch on occasion.
However the cowboys have Landry's name in the Ring of Honor and have a Statue sitting outside of Texas Stadium year round.
That is plenty of honoring Coach Landry, much more than a little patch being worn on a uniform here and there.

I myself would be FOR putting a sticker on the back of the helmets to honor him. Permanently

Why do folks have such a hard time regonizing that Landry has already been honored in a number of manners.
You start adding new "honors" and the honors start to become less meaningful.
