now......

Edit - Recap:
I'm very anxious and I have butterflies. I'm ready to get out on the field. I dreaded camp a few days ago, but I am looking forward to it now.
The first day of TC is usually intense, but by day three the guys get a little sore and it gets sloppy.
We are very excited about this season. This is definitely the most talented team I have been a part of position by position. It doesn't matter one bit though if we don't work hard, come together and gel. We look good on paper but that doesn't matter.
We want to develop the swagger back that the 90's Cowboys had.
When we came into mini-camp Coach Parcells said "Guys, you have to get it in gear, it's never taken me this long to win".
The Cowboys have gone out and added players to make us a better team. Our biggest problem last year was adapting to the new defense. We lost a few games by less than a field goal. If he can keep the intensity we had last year we can be really good. We have one of the best FG kickers in the league now.
I live by the Tom Landry rule. If you don't show you have it by year three, then you are gone. I wasn't nervous because I knew what I had to do and changing to the 3-4 gave me the opportunity to get on the field. I knew that given that chance that if I failed I only had myself to blame. It was time for me to step-up and show what I could do.
In regards to my contract staus, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. I would like to get something done by the third or fourth game of the year. If we can go ahead and get it done then I have nothing to worry about. It's not like I'm not getting paid, I will eat well, but it would be nice to get som security for the future.
TO won't make other players better, he will create opportunities for some guys. They have to take advantage of that opportunity. You can't put two guys on TO and Glenn. Then Crayton and Witten or open. Teams can no longer put 8 men in the box. Opportunities will be created for alot of guys.

A lot's been said about Bradie's maturity on the field, but he even sounds more mature and together being interviewed. He really does sound like an intelligent team leader now.

Interesting comment that a lot of the biggest hits happen the first day of camp, when guys are fresh and haven't gotten sore yet... Said the first day is usually crisp for that reason. Third day is when it gets sloppy because guys are limping around. :)

Also, Parcells told them, "You guys have to get going... It's never taken me this long to win before." Bradie said that really got their attention.

-- How did the 3-4 help him? It did help, but he said the players all know about "The Tom Landry Rule"... That you better produce by the third year. That got him going as much as anything.

-- Contract situation? "One bird in the hand is worth two in the bush." He really wants to get something done before the season. Later made a token comment about anything can happen and sometimes you don't get to stay where you want, but it sounds like he really wants to be here. Mentioned that he was still getting paid and wouldn't be starving even if he didn't get a new deal right away.

-- T.O. Helping? Said he was thinking about how to attack this offense, and that you simply can't double everyone. So Glenn or T.O. are getting singled.

Hosts ended by saying how enthusiastic James sounds... He fires you up just listening to him. They may try to do a weekly show with him.

- best team on paper that he has been on since being here.
- sounds fired up
-would like to get a contract by the 3-4th week of the season. beginning the process now, but Cowboys are concentrating w/ the rookie contracts now
- bust out year, combination of the switch to the 3-4 and him being in that landry 3 year rule that Parcells talks about. Knew he needed to step up.
- defense is greedy right now.

Here's what i got...

Most talanted he has seen the team position by position.

Team looks good on paper but will still need to gel to have success.

Parcells to team in minicamp..."You guys gotta get it in gear this year cause it's never taken me this long to win before."

Combo of third year and switch to 3-4 led to his breakout season.

Would like to have something done contract-wise by the 3rd or 4th game of the season. Has had discussions.

Wants to remain a cowboy.

Effect of TO on the offense...opens up other receivers, JJ, etc.

that's what I think happens, although I'm seeing about mid-season, sorta like how we gave Greg Ellis an extension during the ?'02? season, thanks for the recap fellas

Thanks for everyone who recapped. I like that Bradie might be signed later during the season. That way they can get an half way analysis at least before signing him to a deal.

I love our defense practicing against this every day.

Hell.....I just love our defense. Even Hercules Watkins. ;)

That's not the Chuck Norris way. Clearly, there are issues here beyond what appears on the surface.

I'd get the James extension done ASAP. I know some people want to wait to see if he relapses. But with a full year of the 3-4 under his belt and a natural upwards career progression arc for a 25 year old player, a much more likely scenerio is that he ends up costing much more in January than what he would cost us today. Get a bargain now, and don't even allow him the negotiation leverage of possible free agency.

Which is why he should be next, not Roy Williams. He is much more likely to come at a reasonable price now than he would be if he has a strong year.

I know that Trick pointed this out in an earlier post, but I just wanted to underscore how insightful Bradie's answer was to this question.

I have always hated the cliche': "he makes everybody around him better."

Bradie got it exactly right - it's entirely how the individual responds to the situation (positive or negative) that makes all the difference. You could have Superman on your team, but if you do not take advantage of the opportunities that come your way as a result, not even Superman can make you better.

... unless of course, he picks you up and flies you over the goal line every play. ;)

And that was an insightful post on your part.

Owens is not here to make everyone better. He won't make the OL block better. He won't enable Julius Jones to run better.

He will pose a threat that will make defenses more honest. But it is still up to the other ten players to do their jobs also. I have no doubt Owens will do his.

good stuff.

Owens presence puts his teammates in more advantageous situations....eg. Julius Jones and Barber won't face 8 men in the box as much as they did in the past.
