I am suprised. I thought we released him too fast after his injury. They were speaking highly of him last year I thought.

Niners release Bruce Thornton

Bruce Thornton no longer fit into team's CB plans By: SFI staff

Date: Aug 1, 2006

The full-scale reconstruction of the 49ers’ secondary continued Tuesday morning when the team waived third-year veteran Bruce Thornton, the team’s regular starter at left cornerback during the 2005 season.

Thornton, a fourth-round draft pick of the Dallas Cowboys in 2004, was acquired by the 49ers last September after being released by the Cowboys and emerged quickly in the San Francisco secondary after beginning the season on the team’s practice squad.

After starting left cornerback Ahmed Plummer went down after three games with an ankle injury, Thornton stepped into the lineup in Week 5 and started the next 11 games at left cornerback, continuing to hold the position even after Plummer returned from his injury in November.

Thornton had a strong starting debut as a 49er against the high-powered passing game of the Indianapolis Colts in October, and set himself up as viable candidate for the position in the future with solid play during his first month as a starter. But his play began to falter as the season progressed, and the 49ers apparently viewed him as part of the problem instead of the solution as the team moves forward in a secondary that allowed a franchise-worst 4,427 yards passing in 2005 while finishing last in the NFL in pass defense.

Thornton slipped down the depth chart during the offseason as the team acquired 11th-year veteran Walt Harris and immediately placed him in the starting lineup at left cornerback. Veteran Mike Rumph, second-year players Derrick Johnson and B.J. Tucker and newcomer Sammy Davis all passed Thornton in the team’s plans at cornerback, so the 49ers decided to release him early to give him an opportunity to catch on with another NFL team this summer.

Usually when Bill lets someone go, no matter what the board says, he turns out to be right. He's got a great eye for talent. At least for knowing when folks don't got it.

we're so strong at CB now you won't see much of that. although there's definitely teams in the league that could take a look at him, i don't see him being out of the league yet.

Now everyone knows why he was dropped. SF stank it up so bad that he was an upgrade for a while.

Have to wonder if Jeff Ireland made all the difference in our drafts. Once he got here, we started to hit gold in every hole we dug.

I'd give these guys a bit more time before I got all jacked up on Ireland. It looks promising. But lets think back to what we thought after 1 year with Gurode, Bryant, Ross, Jamar Martin, Pete Hunter, and Tyson Walter. We thought we'd struck gold there, huh?

Only Pettiti is an Ireland pick on that list, which was his point.

And at the very, very least Pettiti will stick on this team as a backup, which is fine for a 6th round pick.

I am not saying we weren't drafting pretty good. I am just saying we have even raised the bar from those drafts. I know time will tell, but I am really starting to like some of this draft class.

He wasn't in charge of the draft; Lacewell was still running the show -- at least that's my understanding. And Parcells had a hand in putting Ireland in charge and moving Lacewell along towards retirement. Ireland understands the guy of players Parcells wants & don't think Lacewell adjusted.

Well, Bill did draft him.

FIRST OFF - Ireland was here before he became the head of scouting. He was just, you know, scouting.

SECOND OFF - Thorton wasn't a stupid pick - a lot of people had him tagged. And he didn't look awful in training camp that year. He just showed that he didn't have 'it' for some reason or other. It happens - I asssure you we will make a bad pick again someday.

Just because we may (keyword - may - jury still out) have had 2 outstanding drafts in a row doesn't mean that you always get so lucky.
