Mickey:
I am currently on my way to Canton with Brad Sham.
Last time I went was 20 years ago, and it was great then. It was amazing the video they had back then, it should be much better now.
Bill changed alot of things around yesterday. He gave alot of players a chance to work with the first team to see how they perform.
Columbo worked with the first team offense at OT.
It was very interesting on the nickel he had Burnett working with James. This may be a good spot for him. He was a safety at Tennessee. They are trying to get him on the field any way they can. They wanted to do this last year but they felt thay might overload him, and then he got injured.
Watkins was starting at FS over Davis in nickel situations.
On the second team nickel, one of the LB's was Roy Williams.
As Bill said, he is not a bonified superstar yet, but he can improve on things. Yes, he has skills and played well but he can get even better. He did struggle not having Woodson there anymore. I still think he can get better and do things people haven't imagined he could do yet.

Not certain who he thinks would be surprised. I guess he's talking about the rest of the NFL. Anybody who watched RLW play at OU knows what he can be if he is given the opportunity to do so in the proper scheme. The problem is that we've never allowed him to play up to his potential because of how we play him. JMO of course.

exactly.. as great as he has been for us, and he has been great, it has been so frustrating to watch how we use him.. if we would just free him up and let him do his thing, he would be absolutely INCREDIBLE.. that's what Stoops did at OU, and he was otherworldly.. seriously, he would singlehandedly dominate games.. Stoops actually named a position after Roy.. he was smart enough to just let him loose and dominate.. I mean, he finished 8th in the Heisman voting as a defensive player that didn't return kicks or play any offense.. that is impressive.. I'm hoping that this is the year that we finally let him loose to do his thing..

Having Watkins in as the nickel FS makes our med/long pass defense just so much better.

Let's see Brunnell "loop" passes over Watkins.

Put this down boys. Pat Watkins will be the opening day starter at FS. He is just too good to keep on the sidelines. Make KD a Steve Tasker ... a perrenial star on ST. There's nothing wrong with that. Keeping Watkins off the field, IMO, would be a misuse of his talents. He's showing he can read offense, adjust to receivers and cover ground quickly. It's been a while since we've had someone like that.

The thing about Watkins, if he continues to impress and earns playing time, is that he could be a difference maker.

Teams will watch his leaping ability on film, but will underestimate it a bit early on. Seeing a 6'5" guy with a 42" leap on film and seeing it in person are two different things. If he starts snagging int's then teams have to change their gameplan a bit and limit their passing lanes (especially medium and deep middle stuff). This would allow our CB's to press VERY hard on outside routes.

I sure hope this kid can continue to learn and earn some playing time.

Exactly right... Kenny "The Shark" Gant always made our special teams better...

Well said.

When they see this kid, like Zimmer said, "Running like a deer"-- cross the field, leap into the air and pick off a pass or two you'll see that nonsense from last year stop.

And it's not just the deep passes either but we had our lunch "eaten" on completions between the hashes to tightends .

I don't know what Stoops' name was, but since we have the Mike, Sam, and Will LB's, I hereby christen the new position the "Roy LB".

.... I like the sound of that! :)

I think Roy Williams is already a huge difference maker, but I've watched his entire career. I know he can do more it utilized properly. That's why I have been begging for a real FS. I actually think a real FS would make Terence Newman even better too, and we all already know how good he is too...

I'm honest enough to admit that I am seriously hoping that Pat Watkins can be that guy. I understand why he slid in the draft, but I happen to think that this is a great situation, both for him and this team. If Watkins can be a center-fielder and allow Roy to roam more, this defense takes another huge step forward.

I think Watkins will come on in nickel situations almost exclusively these 1st few weeks of the season, and work on STs

Parcells now has both of his FSs who can be capable gunners on STs, as well as adequate starters at FS, with Watkin's potential being much higher
