When I took that pic, I thought it was a bad shot. It still is, focus is out, but it's enough to show Watkin's incredible vertical.

How can anyone pass on a FS who can defy gravity? It can't be done.

I've said it before, not only does he have a 6'5" inch body, but he jumps around 36" and that's not even counting the length of his arms. If you add it all up, he's probably eleven feet in the air when he jumps. That like trying to fit a pass into a receiver who is standing behind a basketball goal.

6'5"
+ 40" vertical (I thought someone said that yesterday)
____
9'9"

Plus 2.5' (arms above head extended)
____________

12'2"

And if its "only" a 36" vertical? He is merely 11'10" at his peak.

Pwat can get up there.

It's funny but since all the positive talk about Watkins has come out the whining about Dwight Smith has completely "dried up". Maybe next time some folks could have a little faith in Ireland and our youngsters before we go off half-cocked thinking we have to sign every "average" player on the planet.

Well, I don't know of anyone who has arms extending two and a half feet above one's head, but even still this guy can leap. No wonder they have him working the FG blocking team.

It has to be something with that body type. Michael Wilson holds or held the vertical dunk record at 12 ft and is built the same way.

Hah.

Almost?

They had to scrub the floor first before he jumped. The dirt on the floor prevented an accurate measurement. He wasn't even registering a vertical until the cleaning ladies swept the floor.

possible Red Zone threat?

I was thinking same thing....

and....

he doesnt really need to be that close to WR's to defend/intercept the ball... ie. if a WR beats him a little he can leap sooner and maybe get to the ball... unless the WR was lead down the field... but those "on the money" & "underthrown" passes are HIS!!!

There was a 6'11" kid who played basketball at WVU, and they called him "Dimes" because, you guessed it, that's all they could slip under his feet when he jumped.

He was 6'10" and couldn't dunk it. I couldn't believe that, but he was so big and slow.

Anyone know why he lasted that long?

The way he leaps, it's funny he didn't go to the NBA... I'm willing to bet, and I'm serious, that he could jump higher then Superman!

Me too. I'm more of the Kendall Watkins body type. Only a lot shorter and fatter. (How's that for a little Cowboy's trivia?) :D My vertical is only 4 less than Patrick's, though. I have more like a 3 inch vertical.

That's somehitng I thought about when we drafted him Ty...

6'5", athletic... 43" vertical and he catches the ball well... he would be almost impossible to stop with a nice high throw...

The easy answer, even though it sounds "stupid" is that Watkins body-type is so off the bell curve when it comes to the position that it literally scared the hell out of pro-personal.

For years business automation buyers were well aware of the phrase, "No one ever got fired for buying IBM"...

Well it's the same here. It's easier to "sell" a 6' tall 200lb FS to the rest in your organization that it would be to "sell" someone shaped as differently as Pat Watkins.

So most personel departments--- fearing the fallout from drafting an athletic oddball like Pat Watkins-- just avoided the problem by not drafting him.

But I can tell you right now there are other teams out there seeing what this kid is doing in training camp and kicking themselves for not dropping a 4th or a 3rd or even a 2nd on the guy.

This kid has the chance to be a difference maker for any defense-- you just watch. ;)

That sounds reasonable...and I am going to "watch"...

I like this player alot! I'm pulling for him and Carpenter to do good things...

Hell, I'm pulling for all the rooks!
