View Full Version : DMN Camp Blog: Roster moves (Mroz released, QB Matt Baker signed)

Roster move, uniform change
The Jeff Mroz Era is over.
The Cowboys cut the undrafted free-agent from Yale Monday and added quarterback Matt Baker, who was recently cut by Houston.
The Cowboys had interest in Baker during the draft and as an undrafted free agent, but came to terms with Mroz instead. Baker, 6-3, 210, played at North Carolina.
On the uni front, the Cowboys are wearing their throwback, white helmets at today's practice. They're pretty sharp looking in a classic football kind of way.

Mosley's LA Story!
After cranking out a controlled scrimmage novella, it was time for a little R&R on Sunday.
My wife and I headed for one of the best restaurants in LA (http://www.koirestaurant.com/), where we met my actor-comedian friend, Mike Overman.
If you're not familiar with Mike's work, you're not alone. But seriously, he raced through the same comedy troupe that produced Will Ferrell and has been showing up in comedy shows all over Los Angeles.
Remember this name.
Public note of thanks to Richard A., who told me about Zoey's Cafe (http://www.zoeyscafe.com/). Great brunch and free wireless. If you can get past the name, it's the perfect spot.

Morning activities...
The first practice begins at 9 a.m. Pacific time today and will last until 11 a.m.
The creative minds over at Channel 8 (WFAA) are trying a little something different with the Campcast tomorrow. We'll be filming it during practice. Producer Sean Hamilton explained to me that anchor Joe Trahan will be talking to me about drills. He even said we would walk around talking to reporters.
I have a bad feeling about this, but as I told Sean, I'm a team guy. I could see Bill Parcells kicking us out of practice. Stay tuned.

It certainly turned out to be wrong, but it wasn't crazy to think that Mroz might have made some noise. He's got the right size, one of the Cowboys coaches (Palmer?) worked closely with Mroz, and the Cowboys signed him. Apparently the Cowboys thought he was worth a shot.
In hindsight, the shot turned out to be a blank. But nothing ventured, nothing gained....

Abersonc believes this is a ploy to generate interest in Henson. By making it SEEM that Henson has beaten out a quality NFL prospect like Mroz, teams will begin to think Henson is worth something.
Abersonc thinks that by cutting Mroz now, it ensures that other teams will have no interest in him. So when we get rid of Henson, Mroz will be available to claim the role he so clearly earned, 3rd string QB.

That must be why Parcells pretty much stopped playing Mroz during training camp. The publicity was getting to be too much, and Parcells wanted to keep Mroz's incredible talents a secret.

Sorry Hostile, I made that left turn at Albuquerge(sp?).
Many posters on here believe Henson will be the next great QB, so in their opinion, Henson is staying put.
Baker being signed is an opportunity for the Romo haters to go on and on about how Romo will never amount to an NFL QB.
They're thinking Bledose, Henson and Baker...Baker signaling the end for Romo.
Hence, I am expecting the slights against Romo to increase...such is the nature of the beast.
However, I'm STILL confident that Romo will secure the second spot and possibly unseat Bledsoe before the seventh game.

Sorry Hostile, I made that left turn at Albuquerge(sp?).
Many posters on here believe Henson will be the next great QB, so in their opinion, Henson is staying put.Yes, most of us who are "Hensonites" believe he will be the next great QB here. However, very few of us think Romo is a goner. There are a few, but by far they are in the minority.
Baker being signed is an opportunity for the Romo haters to go on and on about how Romo will never amount to an NFL QB.Incorrect. All evidence to the contrary. The faction saying one of the QBs is a dead duck are the "Henson haters" not the "Romo haters," whoever they are. For every anti-Romo post you can show me I can show you 20 anti-Henson ones.
In fact most of the guys being tagged as "Hensonites" say every time they post that they want both kids to do good. It is almost always ignored and the focus remains that they think Henson will be the better QB. How that equals "Romo hate" is something you'll have to explain to me because I confess I'm never going to get it.
They're thinking Bledose, Henson and Baker...Baker signaling the end for Romo.I challenge you to find even one post with that predicted lineup of QBs or one with Mroz instead of Romo. The paranoia is really funny, but the truth is almost to a man the Henson faction here does not predict Romo is gone. Predictions of his ouster are extremely rare and in fact I can think of only 1 banned poster who has predicted he's going to be waived. One!
Hence, I am expecting the slights against Romo to increase...such is the nature of the beast. I'm still waiting for evidence of these sleights, and you still haven't produced any.
However, I'm STILL confident that Romo will secure the second spot and possibly unseat Bledsoe before the seventh game.See, I don't see that as a Henson sleight, or even a Bledsoe sleight. I call it an opinion and not worth getting panties in a wad over.
