Fifth-round rookie Pat Watkins is reportedly the favorite to start at free safety for Dallas, over incumbents Keith Davis and Willie Pile.
Watkins has been the story of Cowboys training camp. An athletic 6-5 specimen, he is someone to monitor in deep dynasty IDP leagues.

Seems unlikely that he starts opening day. Thinking mid season at the earliest.

Exactly the same thing I was thinking. With the bye week coming so soon, perhaps that might be the time to make the switch.

Watkins has been my "favorite to start at free safety" since we drafted him. I still can't figure out why we paid Davis all that money to be a STs ace.

Was Davis signed before or after the draft?

Insurance.
That's what I thought we signed Coleman for. Expensive insurance if that's why we signed Davis.

This is great news.
After seeing Watkins in camp the last two days .. He's very fluid and looks to be a hard worker. I hope it really works out.

I just hope he is better than anybody else on the team. He's just a rookie, and really doesn't have the credentials to be "awesome" at this point in time. He wasn't drafted on the first day, and being that, he is not an elite player ready to take on the NFL's best WRs. I just hope he can learn the game as he goes.

I'd be very suprised if that happens. Not many 5th round rookies start opening day.

Yep. And Merriman's nick has been lights out for a long time. He even has a tatoo from college showing a light switch.

true, he is just a rookie, but he's only going to be asked to roam CF, and he can do that given his size and speed, plus his closing speed is very good in case he reads routes too late, which he will, that's something Killer never had going for him, once he read the WRs route wrong, or late, the play was over, big-play for the opposing O
but IMO, Watkins will start off in the nickel for a few games

Yeah, it's kinda weird. We named him that because "New" is in "Newspaper", and because the newspaper covers the whole world, or whatever.
I would like for his nickname to be "Skinny Kid Who Swats Ball". :p:

I don't know about this Watkins kid, I was at the late practice today (wed) and Watkins let receivers get by him deep, at least twice...Parcells was not happy!

How about we wait to see him in an actual game before we anoint him the next great cowboy saftey.
Let's not forget that he's been playing against the same players every day in practice and he knows a lot about what the offense is running. You hear about the picks he's had, but you don't always hear about the times he's gotten beat.
I'd be really scared if he starts the washington game. Moss is praying to get to go against a rookie.

Did I miss the article that goes along with this? I mean, I think Watkins will eventually end up starting anyway, but I would be somewhat surprised if he begins the season as a starter.

I don't think so. Moss' last year at UM was in 2000. Watkins played at FSU from 2002 to 2005......

Thats what I thought.
Seems the Cowboys wanted to at least lock-up the position because they may have thought that they wouldn't take a FS before all of the "big names" were gone. However, Watkins fell to them. Thats why we have Davis at his current contract.
If Davis beats out Watkins, fine. If Watkins beats out Davis, fine. If Watkins can do it, I would like it better because he is just starting his career with the Cowboys.
