Since several of you have an interest in reading more about practice, I decided to show up this morning. Here are some things that caught my eye:
• Mike Vanderjagt did not take a turn in the kicking rotation, which instead featured Tyler Fredrickson and Shaun Suisham. Bill Parcells' patience with Vanderjagt is wearing thin. Asked about the veteran kicker, Parcells said, "I don't know what's the matter with him. Don't get me going with the kickers."
So far, the club's two biggest free-agent signings have had a pretty light load in camp. Keep in mind that Vanderjagt has yet to work on kickoffs during camp, which means Parcells will probably have to hold a roster spot for a specialist.
• Parcells did not elaborate on his one-sided discussion with wide receiver (http://cowboys.beloblog.com/archives/2006/08/parcells_has_onesided_discussion_with_t.html)Terry Glenn on Monday afternoon. He joked that he was discussing the beautiful weather and asking Glenn what type of car he was driving. Asked for the 188th time about Terrell Owens' hamstring injury, Parcells said the question was becoming "redundant" and moved on to another topic.
• Tony Romo got off to a hot start in team drills, throwing a quick out to Sam Hurd and then hitting Terrance Copper on a deep throw down the left sideline. He did get picked off by rookie safety Abram Elam (stock rising), who promptly fumbled during the return.
Romo and Hurd appeared to have their signals crossed on the play. Later in practice, Elam stripped Julius Jones of the ball and took off the other way. It will be hard to keep this guy off the roster.
• Catch of the day award goes to...fullback Lousaka Polite, who made a one-handed grab while never breaking stride down the right sideline. Passing game coordinator Todd Haley congratulated Polite while Parcells told Romo, "He saved you!"
• Rob Petitti worked at left tackle with the first-team offense and Jason Fabini worked at right tackle. The rest of the line was LG Kozier, C Gurode and RG Rivera. Parcells revealed that Fabini and Marc Colombo would split the game at right tackle Monday.
• Second-best catch of the day goes to...tight end Jason Witten, who made a one-handed grab on a pass from Drew Bledsoe. Witten is becoming more of a vocal role on this team. After one play, he went out of his way to let Drew Bledsoe know he missed him.
I had a nice visit with new tight ends coach Freddie Kitchens during which he tried to explain the evolution of the F-back to me. May have to have a second conversation at some point.
• Hit of the Day: Safety Roy Williams absolutely drilled rookie tight end Anthony Fasano after he appeared to make a nice catch in the end zone. Fasano was in a defenseless position when Williams nailed him, but that shouldn't come as a shock. Bledsoe walked toward Williams and shouted, "C'mon Roy!" as the two left the field. This prompted nose tackle Jason Ferguson to participate in a shouting match with Bledsoe. Meanwhile, veteran guard Marco Rivera had a couple of private words with Williams.
After practice, Parcells told players they were "finally" coming around, but then, in an obvious throwback to the Williams play, he reminded them to respect their teammates.
• About a week ago, receiver Jamaica Rector appeared to hit a wall. He was somewhat sluggish and wasn't making the plays he made early in camp. Now, it appears Rector's found his legs again. He snagged a pass across the middle from Romo this morning. He also showed off his athletic ability in making some tough catches on the sideline in Saturday's preseason game. And that's your Uncle Marvin Report for today!
• Drew Henson did not take a single turn in team, 7-on-7 and red zone drills today. Parcells said he wanted to take a look at rookie quarterback Matt Baker. What did he see?
"He seems to be catching on pretty good," Parcells said of Baker.
OK, let's begin our rapid-fire session: DE Marcus Spears had a pretty strong morning practice. After he beat Colombo on one play, Parcells shouted, "Welcome to camp, Spears!"...Offensive line coach Tony Sparano worked over RT Marc Colombo after DE Kenyon Coleman beat him in 1-on-1 drills. "You made the punch, but you can't let your feet die." Parcells said Colombo's play the other night was "passable."...C Al Johnson dominated NT Thomas Johnson during 1-on-1 drills and Cory Procter continued to play well at left guard...Not sure if J.R. Tolver is long for this team. Just dropping way too many passes...I'm going to break away and write a column this afternoon.
I'll be back to answer your questions later this evening. Enjoy the time away. I'm leaving you in the capable and calloused hands of Todd "Spin Cycle" Archer.
all my love,
m

Once again I ask, what exactly is an F-back. I'm assuming like an h-back isn't a half-back, a f-back isn't a fullback. So where does the f-back lineup and what does he do exactly?

I believe the f-back is more of a tight end fullback hybrid yet unlike the h-back the f-backs role relies more on lining up in the backfieild and moving around in motion and such to be a blocker, yet not really a ball carrier.

I like the fact the defense is "giving the business" to the offense. But Coach Parcells is right. We need to save it for our opponents and exercise caution.

Not sure what Bledsoe was complaining about, he is the one that led Fasano into Roy. Guilt perhaps? :)
BTW, Welcome to the NFL Fasano. And NFL stands for Not For Long if you keep getting smashed by Roy!

Sounds like you could be on the right track there.
The h-back is a TE/HB hybrid that is more of an offensive weapon while an f-back is a TE/FB hyrid more focused on blocking?
I could see that.

I play semi-pro (WR) and get drilled at practice daily. In games when I get hit I just bounce off it and keep going ( broke 3 tackles on a curl route last game). My teammates kinda conditioned me to know what it will feel like.

agreed.. Drew doesn't understand the defensive mentality.. especially a guy like Roy..it would be like asking Drew not bullet a pass because it might hurt a player's hands.. the coaches want everyone to play with high intensity and to practice hard, so you can't blame a guy with Roy's intensity for drilling a player.. hey, he obviously DID let up.. I don't see Fasano's name on the injury list.. :D

Not whining at all. Stating an opinion. This is an opinion board, no? :)
My opinion is that Bill Parcells has gone out of his way to make Henson's life miserable for a while now.
There are either 2 reasons that I can see.
1. He is trying to push some buttons to see if he can spark something in a player (Henson) that he hasn't been able to get out of him yet.
2. He genuinely doesn't want him around.
I'm simply saying if it is #2, then cut the kid some slack by giving him a chance somewhere else. Let him go.

I agree with you...Roy DOES need to cut down on the wood...he did the same thing during the first week of training camp to another players (I forgot who), and at that time I posted that he needs to back off just a tad...
Hey, he can "love tap" a player now and then, but, man, don't try and hit an defenseless player...unless it's the other teams player...
It would really suck if Roy would have injured Fasano...

What reason does Henson have to not ask for a release?
Bledsoe and Romo in front and Parcells taking away valuable practice and playing time in the preseason. This helps him how?
Ask for a release and get on a team that will at least give him a chance. I want him to stay because I'm a Cowboy fan, but I don't see why this is what's best for Henson. This treatment might be good for him if he was a true 3rd year guy but he's older and doesn't have time to wait until he's 32 to have a chance to start which is the pace BP has him on track for.

I feel for Henson, but, he wasted a few years in baseball (baseball sucks), and he bailed out...
I think that's part of the reason that Parcells is doing what he's doing by thinking that he's a quitter, or Parcells is doing it because he just does not like an athlete that comes from another sport to play a very physical game like football...
But, what do I know...nothing!

Is it that big a deal for Henson to not get any reps during the 7-on-7 for this practice? Not to me it isn't. Maybe he's giving the guy some extra time to see what he has since he was just brought in last week... Maybe he's trying to prep this guy for the next preseason game? There are all sorts of reasons why Henson didn't do any 7-on-7 for this ONE practice.
But to just say, Parcells is a jerk because he didn't let him participate in this ONE drill? That just seems childish to me.

I don't see the need for this pity party. He signed a very decent contract, considering his circumstance. He's either got it, or he doesn't. In any case, he is under contract with this team, and unless the offer was spectacular to let him go elsewhere, why waste all the investment we've been making the past two years? Makes absolutely no sense to the team.

Well, to be honest, I don't care if you think it is childish or not. I think Parcells has acted like a jerk many times, not just with Henson. I'll say it again (acting out my childish tendencies :)) Bill Parcells is a jerk, many times.
And.... Henson is not MY guy. He is a Dallas Cowboys QB who I still happen to think has some promise. I just don't see how Parcells handling of him helps him along. My opinion, you don't have to agree with it, and I'm quite certain from your reaction to my post that you don't.
Why would you be preparing Matt Baker for a pre-season game when your #3 QB didn't get a single snap in the last one?
Cmon, it isn't just me, there are lots of people who don't have any personal interest in Henson succeeding who think Parcells has gone out of his way to either tweak Henson or Jerry Jones depending upon your angle.
I'm saying, isn't it time that the head coach makes his mind up? You will probably say no, I say yes. My OPINION is that if you think Henson has a future with the team, INVEST in him beyond money. Let him get work. If you don't, CUT HIM LOOSE.
Because if I were a betting person I would lay a bet with anyone on here that he will be taken by another NFL team pretty darn quickly.

And.... Henson is not MY guy. He is a Dallas Cowboys QB who I still happen to think has some promise. I just don't see how Parcells handling of him helps him along. My opinion, you don't have to agree with it, and I'm quite certain from your reaction to my post that you don't.You haven't actually SEEN how he's handled Henson's development, so who's to say that he's not bringing him along the right way. We saw nothing worth truly mentioning of Romo for four years, and he seemed to do ok. I have a little bit more faith that Parcells knows what he's doing w/Henson than you. That's the difference I see in our opinions.
Why would you be preparing Matt Baker for a pre-season game when your #3 QB didn't get a single snap in the last one? Granted that's a lil far-fetched, but he could get a snap or two in garbage time in this game. But then it could be like I also mentioned see what he could do in this particular drill to see if he's learned enough to even get that. Considering all he's run up to this point is scout team. So how does Henson not getting in this one drill make Parcell's a jerk?
Cmon, it isn't just me, there are lots of people who don't have any personal interest in Henson succeeding who think Parcells has gone out of his way to either tweak Henson or Jerry Jones depending upon your angle.
No it's just not you who believe that, but I also see many people who want both young QBs to succeed, because it only helps the team. I'm just not into conspiracy theories regarding the QB position.
I'm saying, isn't it time that the head coach makes his mind up? You will probably say no, I say yes. My OPINION is that if you think Henson has a future with the team, INVEST in him beyond money. Let him get work. If you don't, CUT HIM LOOSE. Why should he make a decision now? It's only been two years, why should we cut him loose? It took four years for people to even think Romo might be a viable QB option. So why shouldn't it take Henson a similar timeframe to succeed after four years away from football? Patience is a virtue mi amigo.
Because if I were a betting person I would lay a bet with anyone on here that he will be taken by another NFL team pretty darn quickly. I think so, too...as a 3rd QB, which is what he already is on this team.
My opinion, on this here opinion board, no whine with my cheese please. :)At least not with this post... :)

Well, to be honest, I don't care if you think it is childish or not. I think Parcells has acted like a jerk many times, not just with Henson. I'll say it again (acting out my childish tendencies :)) Bill Parcells is a jerk, many times.

Couldn't agree more. Don't see any point in not playing him at all in a preason game and then not letting him play in the 7 on 7 drills.
How is he supposed to learn? You only can learn so much by carrying a clipboard...He's not going to learn by osmosis.
And then this crap with Baker...

Anyone ever see that baseball movie with Robert Redford called the natural ? If you did, remember the manager of the team didn't want Roy Hobbs on his team, refused to play him and wouldn't even let him take batting practice on days off.
Thats kinda of how I see the Henson situation with BP. Jerry Jones or someone in the front office wants Henson on the team, BP wants no part of it...So he just doesn't even take notice of him.
When Henson did well in NFLE BP said something was missing, just didn't explain what...lol. Henson is just a power game for BP.
So, its either that or Henson has a red nose and isn't allowed to take part in reindeer games.
I know its one of the 2 !

I have to agree because if Parcells really does like him he has the absolute Gawd darnedest way of showing it.:D

Im going to say he would take the next step in fulfilling Hutchinson prophecy by being signed by the Bears.

I just said the Skins because Snyder would love to stick that dagger into JJ, if Henson ever panned out.
