Stroud might miss opener
By VITO STELLINO, The Times-Union
Jacksonville Jaguars defensive tackle Marcus Stroud, who has never missed a game in his five-year career, will likely miss the opener against the Dallas Cowboys Sunday after suffering a right ankle injury in practice Wednesday.
Stroud was on crutches Thursday with his right lower leg in a boot and seemed to be grimacing with each step.
The Jaguars have not yet given an update on his condition.
Meanwhile, linebacker Mike Peterson, recovering from a Grade 2 sprained MCL, returned to practice Thursday.
Peterson will likely find out Friday whether he can play Sunday. That will likely depend on whether the knee swells up overnight after his workout.
Also, rookie tight end Marcedes Lewis has been limited in practice and probably can't play.
If the Jaguars don't have Stroud, they may need to bring Donovin Darius into the box to stop the running game and that would open up the passing game for quarterback Drew Bledsoe.
Wow, that's a huge blow if they're without him.

Somewhere Marco Rivera is smiling.

Last year... no Gates, this year...No Stroud. There is the built in excuse if the Boys come out on top. I didn't hear the end of it when we beat the Bolts last year and they didn't have Gates.

Marcus Stroud last year was more of a clog (closing running gaps) that a real playmaker. While it does help, it isn't like losing a real playmaker. (Like them losing Jimmy Smith)

Well, that "clog" allows them to effectively contain the run with only 7 in the box. Without Stroud in the middle, Julius and Marion should have much more room.
And if the Jags even THINK about bringing a safety up to help in run support... 81, 82, and 83 will be ready. Can't wait till Sunday!

Oh goodness. All this talk about their DTs and this happens. Rivera has to be the happiest man on the face of the earth right now. That injury really does sound a little serious, hopefully he will be OK (sportsmenship!!!).........:)

This is why the "big uglies" get no respect, sometimes the work they do is not appreciated. Stroud is a big deal for their defense. Often they only get credtied when they are out. For us, guys may complain about Ferguson for our team and not notice the production but if he went down, his loss would be noticed big time.

Don't trust 'em. Could be a hoax to put Dallas off its guard. That coach likes to run stings, I believe . . . .

Yeah, he's a sneaky bastid...but, the Cowboys already have their game plan put togeather, so if he plays, he plays, if not, so what?
Also, if Jack-In-The-Box tries to fool the NFL with some fishy information about injuries and is caught lying...he will be fined...
