View Full Version : So one of the OKC news channels ran a story about internet sports sites..

and how so many guys were spending so much time at work on them.. they talked about how they would be on a site and looking over their shoulders for their bosses and would jump if someone knocked on their door, etc.. they focused on fantasy football, but they talked about it being all kinds of sports sites.. they said that on average, a typical worker spends 50 minutes per week on an internet sports site.. so i thought of Cowboyszone.com and all of you guys.. i thought of the Hostiles and the abersoncs and the AdamJT13s and the Racks and the WoodysGirls and the Superpunks and the InmanRoshis and the HeavyHitta31s and the Juke99s.. anyways you get my point.. just thought it was funny that i saw a news story and it made me think of you guys..
so it begs a good question or two.. how many minutes/hours do you think you spend at work each week on the Zone? and... are you jumpy and do you look over your shoulder so your boss doesn't catch you on the Zone?

Some weeks it's 2 hrs a week and other times 10 hrs.
I'm not jumpy because if they want to fire me and find someone to do what I do for my salary they can have at it.

Unfortunately my cube is set up so that my back and the computer screen, are facing towards the entrance, so I always have to be on guard. It doesn't stop me from coming to this site 10 times a day though.

I'm not jumpy at all and I am logged on all during the work day but probably actually on the site less than an hour a day while at work. My boss knows about the site, reads here now and then, and knows on my breaks and lunch I will be on it. Better not to hide or try and be sneaky.

Great thread. Hugely interesting and funny.
Heck I work from home, and STILL feel guilty about the frequency and duration of time spent on this site in particular and sports sites in general.
And.......believe it or not.......I jump up when my girlfriend comes in the room even though there isn't a naked woman or dirty joke to be seen on this site!
It's ingrained from 5 plus years back when I did work in an office and snuck some time online. And whomever said they can fire me and try and replace what I do for the same salary was bang on. People need breaks.
I'm not sure 50 minutes is too much or not though, but I'm guessing I average that yep. Then again lots of people work extra time and at home and don't get paid for that either, it's just part of job.
Thanks for sharing the article.

I've never been able to spend even a minute of on-the-job time on this beloved (or any other) sports site.
Luckily, a full time post-secondary teaching load is just 12 hours a week, so that makes for untold hours of so-called home-based 'research' that starts daily at the theRedzone.org and ends at NFL.com. :)

I very depending on how busy I am; since I do IT support it comes and goes I had weeks where I missed players being cut because I did not look at anything on the web that did not have a processor type error code or a software patch
Then like today it is so dead I could take a nap and no one would see me

My desk and back of the monitor faces my office door. So I'm quick to minimize the window if someone official walks in the door.
Some days I spend more time on the site than others. Lately, it seems I'm on here more than not. :)
Drafting can get pretty boring and monotonous at times, so it's all I can do to stay off the site for more than thirty minutes at a time.

I have a job that is deadline and budget based. My mind goes insane if I have to look at design computations and plan sheets all day long. My employers know that I am on here and they really don't care. All my projects are done early, and I get more done than almost everyone (I have no idea what THEY'RE doing....). We even had a company crackdown recently about internet usage - inappropriate and too much, and about 5 other people were called in specifically to be reprimanded, but I wasn't mentioned. Sometimes I feel a little guilty. But the work gets done, my bilable rate is about 3 times what I make, and they're doing ok.

I am the IT on this rig, so most of the guys here don't really have any idea what I am doing at any given time, and if they saw what I was doing they wouldn't understand it, so they kind of just don't bother.
O and I have no conscience so I look around here anytime I want as long as we don't have anything broken nobody really cares. All the bosses here really concern themselves more with the drilling side of things.

Spend about 2 hours a week. I switch off the internet screen everytime i hear footsteps walking by.
Well, I have had a home based business the last few years and worked outta an outbuilding I built in my backyard. Recently I just contracted with IBM for onsite support for one of their clients.
40 hours a freaking week in an office !!
Of course being IT orientated I have a private room to secure the servers and spare desktops/laptops. Only my passkey can gain entrance.
So, depending on my daily workload, I can spend 5 minutes to 2 hours a day on this site. Out of all of my internet browsing, this site is a good 80% of what I read. Which, is another question I guess, what percentage of your internet browsing is spent here ?

My company just installed some sort of software which monitors who goes where and for how long. Natch, porn is strictly outlawed, but sites like this and ESPN might not be far behind. The co-worker gabbing on the phone with her husband or girlfriends? Unaffected.

80% sounds right. This site is amazing. It eliminates my need to go to any outlets like foxsports or espn, because we have fantastic posters who go there for me, and bring it all to one place. Much appreciated.

I'm "on" all the time, but I'm not really online. Like many, I work in IT, but I'm on the low end of IT. Lots of my projects are deadline-driven, but it won't hold up a roll out or anything. I'll just get some cross-eyed looks from people.
I usually start early, post morning articles while eating breakfast... work, troll the 'net for boys news, have lunch, troll the 'net for boys news, work...
eh you get the point.
I don't really worry about it at my job. Because too many people I know are on message boards of some kind. I think one help desk person is on a board for flowers.
I've got three 'puters on my desk and the one w/the Zone browser is turned so that no one can see it clearly and I can quickly minimize the window if somebody comes by.

But I just wanted to share my experience with this issue. Do me a favor, delete your temporary files on a regular bais!!!

The internet did not exist for most of my business life and I discovered it in 1990 while I was a consultant working for the Super Collider and it was strictly for scientists back then. When the Collider project was cancelled, I became a ropin', ridin' brandin' cowboy for a few years and when the internet opened up to the public, I retired from cowboyin' and set up a website selling the exotic varieties of garlic I grew. I had to because I couldn't make a living selling them locally. My website is a garlic information center and I send many kinds of garlic to gourmets and gardeners in every state of the union.
These days I spend most of my time on the net answering email, etc. (I get LOTS of email and website traffic from all over the world) and can drop in on the Zone or the Renegade's DTX board at will since I am my own boss and my wife says I can say that. My browser spends more time here than I do as I am often outside working while logged in here.
I know there are more than a few people on this board who know who I am and what I do because one day in July I found over 300 hits on my website that came from this board. I typically get about 600 hits a day and that day it jumped to 963 so I looked into it. This place is like a potato patch and corn field combined - too many eyes and ears to keep secrets.
I try not to offend anyone with my posts, except Jerry Jones; who looks, acts and talks like someone who started a fight with me when we were kids - I won and he's been pissed off at me ever since. I'm actually a pretty peaceable fella most of the time, especially since I became an apprentice geezer.
I probably spend an hour or two in a 12 hour day split between this board and DTX. On these boards I am just a notherBob, but the rest of the world knows me as the Garlicmeister, a self-inflicted title for amusement only. Wanna know anything about any kind of garlic? Nah, probably not.

Well, I'm self employed and work from home so it's a non issue. I am pretty busy for the most part which is why I'm not online that often and when I am it is usually at odd hours.
I probably spend a cumulative average of about 1-2 hours a day on the forums depending on how much news there is to discuss.

It's funny, I'm the boss and I get jumpy when my employees enter my office when I'm surfing the Zone! Guilty conscience I guess since there's usually MANY other things I should be doing.
From the hypocrite files, though, I do admit I get irked when I see an employee frittering their time surfing the web (I don't give them a hard time about it though)... although I'd be happy if I saw they were on this site!

Maybe I ought to send some to the Cowboys, the Roman legions ate garlic every day as they believed it made them stronger and gave them more endurance.
Of course, men who eat garlic every day seldom, if ever, need Viagra. Try it, your wife will love you for it. Excessive use of anabolic steroids is said to make it difficult to maintain a firm erection and maybe garlic would help that although I don't know of any clinical research on that.
Maybe some of the Cowboys could use it but among athletes, that was rarely the problem, just the opposite. Athletes are generally a fairly robust and horny bunch anyway.

I am a traveling worker - i work from hotel rooms and inspect on the road a lot. My job is based around me drafting reports in time and keeping a steady stream of revenue coming in.
As long as I do those other two, I don't think they can complain about how much time I spend here. I am away from home for months at a time, there is NOBODY out here with me, I am denied a social life and average 12 hours a day without weekends. If I want to spend some time on this site, I'll damn well do it.
I spend probably a good 3-4 hours a day perusing the site, that's including the times I stop in just to loko around and then my good posting time. That varies day to day depending on how busy I am.
Note that the 3-4 hours a day thing can't be called business hours. I am awake at 7 AM and work until I go to sleep everyday. Those four hours are my leisure time. I defy anyone in my company to fault me.

Yes, he was the defination of a micro-manager, all of us employees complained about him all the time.
Within 5 months, he turned over an entire staff cause everyone either quit or transferred out. It was truely a horrible experience. He was just someone who had to manage every single detail of what all of his staff did. And his staff ran for the hills, lol.

For the most part you are right. I am not a micro manager, nor do I work for any, but they can be successful. They usally do have to turn their staff over (as described by deep freeze), but they bring in folks who can take it and they work. I'm just saying it is a managerial style that works for some.

As I recall from my management classes in college, you have to micromanage theory X workers who believe work to be onerous and will avoid it every chance they get and you shouldn't micromanage theory Y workers because they're self-starters who are over-achievers and won't do well when when micromanaged. Theory Z says you get the best results by treating and motivating workers individually according to their type instead of treating everyone exactly the same. Self-starters will go elsewhere if you try to treat them like malingerers. Malingerers will slough off if you don't manage them closely.
Being the boss ain't always easy.

If bosses don't want us to surf, don't give us internet on our desktops
... needs us to be on the internet to access production numbers for our weekly and monthly builds. A decision was passed to limit employees access to websites like these. I was in favour of it and opened up the facilities I manage to IT to make it happen. We have a screening program that denies access based on keywords. They include words like sports, health, banking, leisure, shopping, news, chat, forums, etc. Basically the computers are used specifically for work becasue that's all you can do with them.
Life's easier that way. No problems in between.
I access this site mostly through the home computer, but will log on with my personal travelling laptop when I am on the road at the hotel. It all fits with the company policy and I don't stress over what my crew is doing during the work day.

Actually, I have worked some of everywhere, lol. I worked 2 places where this was the case. They limited where we could actually go on the web. It was ok, but one also had some destinated computers that didn't have the limitations. Elimates the problem, but it makes you feeling a child with parental controls.

...as the manager to ensure that your computer has the same controls that other workers have.
The only difference there is between my machine and theirs is what is stored on the hard drive. Other than that all things are the same.
We have all the access to vendors who supply to our industry. You only feel childish when you try to do personal banking or trade stocks while at work. The control ends when you get home.
