View Full Version : Mat McBriar and how he effects our D

I don't know if this has been mentioned here or not... but Mat McBriar is leading the NFL in punting.
His gross average per punt is 50.8 yards (the only punter over 50) with a long of 62 yards. He isn't leading in net punting... but he's only 1.1 yards behind the leader.
What the stats on NFL.com don't reflect is that his 62 yard punt was without any roll... it went that entire way in the air! Other punters have somepunts over 60 yards... but you know those had good rolls to get there. Also, NFL.com doesn't reflect hang time either. I'd bet that McBriar has the best hang time in the NFL by far. He just absolutely bombs his punts.
You know that Parcells loves having a punter like that, the way he loves to win the field position battle. Between McBriar and our defense, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if we lead the NFL in scoring defense.
Right now we're ranked near the middle of the pack in scoring D (14th) and we're ranked in the top ten in total defense (8th)... however, with only two games played, that kickoff return really hurts our ranking on scoring D. Had we not allowed Cartwright to score on that kickoff, we'd be several spots higher. Take away a few penalties that kept drives alive like Ware's and Williams' roughing the QB calls and Ayodele's uneccessary roughness call, and you'd see a lot better ranking as well.
I think that our first game against Jacksonville will end up being unusual, defensively, because we had to get in the swing of things. The Washington game, IMO, is more like our defense will play all year. As the year goes on, I think Dallas' rankings will creep upwards until we're at or near the top in both scoring and total defense.
Overall, I think that the Dallas D is still maturing (not just Pat Watkins) and that they'll be just plain dominating by mid-season. Throw in McBriar pinning teams back deep and I think that we're going be allowing very, very few points this season, which should translate into wins if we have any offense at all.

affect is the verb, effect the noun. Matt McBriar and how he affects our D is the correct title.

Matt McBriar and how he affects our D is the correct title. While correct, what was the point of pointing out an error that probably didn't affect your ability to understand the premise of his post? But I'm sure AF appreciated your grammar lesson as well as other Zone members.

Who actually talks about the punter, right?

I do. I do when the punter is Mat McBriar and when he is kicking butt at his job. He is doing so well that even Cowboys coach Bill Parcells showered him with verbal smoochies after the Washington game. McBriar always has been a good punter. What he lacked last year was consistency. Now he seems to have eliminated the shank or one bad punt from his repertoire, making him an actual weapon.
I realize punters are boring. But next home game, promise you will greet him with a rousing ovation if he keeps this up. He has earned it.

McBriar has punted eight times from inside our 40-yard line. He boomed those punts 61, 51, 56, 62, 51, 50, 61 and 59 yards -- a 56.4-yard average. And I'm pretty sure they all went that far in the air, since they all were returned. (I don't recall any of them being fielded after a bounce.)

Now THOSE are unreal stats. When he gets to let it fly...it flies.

I don't recall that either. He hit some booming punts last year... but this year, almost every kick is a boomer. Last year he was somewhat inconsistent, but now it appears as if his inconsistencies are behind him. If that's that case, then we probably do have a pro bowler on our hands.

I'm waiting for our opponents punt returner to start fielding punts from the parking lot.

McBriar's punted 12 times, 9 punts were returned, 2 touchbacks, and 2 inside the 20.
The amazing thing to me is the fact that, from where he actually kicks the ball (not the line of scrimmage), he's BOOMING 70 to 75 yard punts IN THE AIR the full 75 yards! To do that consistently is just ridiculous!

We've only had 2 games - there is still time for him to shank a few.
But for now, I'm happy.

Good post, AF... Ignore the grammar/spelling police. There's no doubt that McBriar has been awesome and that Parcells has to be grinning ear to ear about having such a field position weapon.
One question, though... Does that KO return really go against our scoring D stats? Do the "official" stats not discount that since it happened on special teams?

lets say our Dallas defense stops them everytime at our 20. The deeper McBriar kicks it, and the Dallas D still stops them at the 20. thats more yardage against the Defense and makes us look worse.
I know it sounds weird, but very true

They have touchdowns categorized... 1 TD against us in the Kickoff Return column. And it DOES count against our total of 4 TD's... otherwise, our defense has actually only allowed 3 TD's.
Kinda sucks that they count special teams TD's against the Defense.

That doesn't have anything to do with McBriar's kicking though. That's all on the defense for allowing the yardage... whether McBriar kicked it 80 yards or 30 yards... the defense still allowed the other offense to gain however many yards they gain.

HUH?
Are you somehow suggesting that punting well hurts our defensive stats for yardage allowed because it gives the opposing offense further to go .......?
If we give up a 30 yard drive before we stop them what difference does it make if they end up on the 20 or the 10 or the 40? It's 30 yards either way.
I suppose there could be some incredibly small effect, but really only if you accept the plausibility of our defense having some mysterious inability to stop the opposing offense until they get to the twenty.

i know it sounds weird, but my hypothetical is true about. Depends on how they rate the defense, and ratios given to yards and points allowed.
anyway, don't let me bog down the Punting thread, McBriar is the bomb, and what I said doesn't even affect that.
It was just something to think about when they rate defenses, and how.
now back to regular schedualed programming....

It's theoretically possible, but it's based on an unrealistic notion that a team would mysteriously be powerless to stop the opposition's offense until it reaches the 20 yard line.
Nevertheless, I agree that McBriar is doing well and hope it continues.

Here to educate me, huh? Okay.
For your sake, I hope that there is someone on this board that is here to educate on both the use of commas and how to avoid sentence fragments.
In the meantime, you can write a 5,000 word post on the use of affect vs effect. While you're at it, go ahead and write one on the proper use of your and you're. Heck, why stop there? You can do one on their, they're and there too. Hey that reminds me... do one on to, two and too if you don't mind. Just for good measure, you might want to throw in where to use know and where to use no.
I seems like your chosen crusade to save The Zone from incorrect grammar will have almost no limit to what it can encompass.
Don't forget the spelling. It is receiver, not reciever. It's spelled scrimmage, not skrimage or scrimage or skrimmage.
The road is long abersonc, but with patience you can make a difference.

No they don't discount it.
That's why it's a good idea to consider all the factors than can influence a stat before making conclusions.
