49ers | League admits to mistakes during Week 3 game
Sat, 30 Sep 2006 09:35:20 -0700
Matt Maiocco, of The Press Democrat, reports the NFL told the San Francisco 49ers this week that its officiating crew made multiple errors resulting in 207 second-half yards in the team's Week 3 loss versus the Philadelphia Eagles, including DT Mike Patterson's 98-yard touchdown return. The 49ers challenged the ruling that Patterson was not down after recovering RB Frank Gore's goal-line fumble, and although the call was upheld during the game, replays showed Patterson with possession of the ball and both knees on the ground, in contact with OT Kwame Harris.

I will never understand why there aren't full time officials. They will still miss calls I know. But this is the NFL now some cheap bush league.

I agree, and it gets worse every year...NFL officiating is catching up to NBA refs when it coems to ludicrous calls and seemingly some bias on agame to game basis..the inconsistency is also amazing...they can see a ticky PI call and flag that one play, then see the other team drag down or run into a receiver later on and call nothing
and the stuff with roughing the passer is totally out of control

I think instant replay has made the officials worse. They used to be a lot better.

I'd like to see them pick one week, when all the teams are playing, and play by 1970 rules. No replay, no challenge flags, DB's jamming WR's all the way down the field, OL not allowed to extend the arms, no QB's sliding around like baseball players, just 60 minutes of head-slapping, helmet-to-helmet warfare.
It's been two long weeks...:)

Before replay we had egregious error on top of error each and every week. The Network wrapup shows would show upset fans, angle after angle of game deciding officials error that cost your team a loss.
We would see a team eliminated from the playoffs on bobbled receptions and feet out of bounds catches, and interceptions out of bounds and knees down fumbles---- on the critical play in the waning seconds that cost your team the ultimate loss.
And we'de see the play 20 times on every outlet all week.
It was brutal. The memory stays with you.
I certainly understand if someone wasn't old enough to remember but...
Please never compare the occasional missed call now with the constant weekly travesty of the replayless NFL.
By the way the Vikings missed the winning kick against the Cowboys in 1974.

The NFL just doesn't want to deal with professional refs. At least now they do release some of the worst offenders. But I still don't see why they think the present system is somehow better.
They are getting down on the 'Roughing the Passer' flags. I don't think I have seen a game this season where it wasn't called, and mostly on weenie hits. Often you see it called on both teams. Guess this is their oh so subtle way of saying, 'Don't mess with the Golden Gooses'.

There was no video evidence of whether or not Patterson was down. The Reggie Brown block was executed concurrently with Schobel's catch. And Michael Robinson did indeed make contact with a defenders legs as he was being blocked by another 49er.
On top of that, nobody from the NFL has actually confirmed whether or not mistakes were made as this article is just some journalist guessing at which calls they would say were incorrect. In the case of the Schobel catch and Robinson's chop block, he doesn't even appear to understand the rules.

Frank Gore fumbled on 3rd down. It was his 3rd straight failed attempt to gain more than 0 yards. Maybe a 10 point swing?

No way!
The Eagles were on the positive side of three blown calls?
I wouldve never guessed. That never happens.

Yes, there was. It was quite apparent from the replays on TV.

Unless you're referring to some footage that was not aired during the actual game, no there wasn't. There was no visual evidence showing Patterson with possession of the ball, downed, and touching a 49er. That's why the replay couldn't overturn the call. Again, nobody knows what the NFL said about these decisions as this KFFL blurb is derived from some San Fran journalist's assumptions about what calls the NFL might have admitted were in error.

Nope. Actual game footage. You could see Patterson as he was getting up, one knee on ground, leaning into a SF lineman. Had it pointed out with a SF fan as we watched.
TIVO is a great thing.
