View Full Version : I'm so sick of the McNabb hype

Everyone is talking about how great he is doing this year, how he is healthy now and is back to his old self (not that his old self was ever that great) and they also keep pointing out how great he is doing without T.O.
Well, I'm calling B.S. on all of this crap.
Look at the facts...
Fact 1: In four games McNabb has played the 24th, 29th, 31st and 32nd ranked passing defenses. That's 4 of the 8 worst passing defenses in the leauge and 3 of the 4 worst passing defenses in the league. If he had not looked halfway decent against this sorry teams he should have retired immediately.
Fact 2: He has not put up great numbers, even against this horrible pass defenses. Yes, he has not thrown that many interceptions and yes, his yards per attempt is good, but he has been as inaccurate as ever. Only against the worst pass defense in the league (Texans) was he able to complete over 60% of his passes (66.7%) (and Brunell was able to complete 88.9% of his passes against them while he could only complete 46.2% of his passes against us). Against the Giants (29th ranked pass defense) McNabb completed 58.7% of his passes. Against the 49ers (24th ranked pass defense) he completed 50% of his passes. And against the Packers (31st ranked pass defense) he only completed 47.1% of his passes.
If you cannot consistently complete 58-68% of your passes against the worst pass defenses in the leauge, then you have a problem.
McNabb may be better this year. The Eagles may be better off without Owens. The Eagles may even beat us (and our 8th ranked pass defense) on Sunday. But, all this talk of McNabb being great this year is premmature and complete garbage.
He has played against some of the worst teams in the league and he still has not put up great numbers. So let's at least wait for a few more weeks before we start putting McNabb into the Pro Bowl and the Super Bowl.

as much as i hate Mcflabb, i gotta recognize that the guy is a great player. but in this case i agree with u because as you pointed out the defenses they have faced so far are just pathetic. if he beats the Cowboys this sunday and he is a major reason for them winning then he does deserve the hype

Before we go criticizing McNabb, let's look to our own house.
Who exactly have we played?
The Jags? Yes, they have a stout defense, and they're very good at home. But they've lost two straight, and gave up a billion points to the Skins...led by "Noodle Arm".
The Skins? Well, they were absolutely pathetic when we played them. They were without two of their most important players.
The Titans? An 0-4 team?
Eagle fans can say the exact same thing about us....The combined record of their opponents is 3-9....but ours is 4-8....not too much better.
Oh, I think we're better....but let's not get too excited about how McNabb is lucky about the teams he's faced.

Mcnabb has never been accurate, the only thing he ever had going for him was he could throw lots of TD's and low INT's. Cause when he did miss, it was always like wide open people.
MCnabb gets credit for throwing lots of short passes that go long, or long passes that go longer. He sucks outside of that

I agree completely. I think Philadelphia is in for a rude awakening in playing the cowboys.
They have the top offense in the nfl, but as you said, they've played 4 of the worst defenses in the nfl.
We're ranked 8th in the league after getting off to a slow start, and then having the titans and skins throw on us from behind. We also played contain against Young.
I also don't think the Philly defense is a lot to get worked up about. Their defensive line hasn't been getting the the quarterback much at all. They have 3 sacks in their last two games, and no sacks against the Packers at all. And they have a horrible line. They also can't stop the run at all. With Trent Cole in there they've especially been unable to stop the run.
The Eagles are allowing 94.5 yards per game. Which at first look isn't that bad given we're allowing 83 yards per game. But the Eagles gave up 99 yards against the Packers, and 123 yards against the 49ers in their last two games.
San fransisco is ranked 12th in rushing yards, and Green Bay is ranked 26th.
We're ranked 5th in the nfl in rushing yards. With 36 yards more per game than San Fransisco... If we put up 160 yards on ground against the Eagles... they aren't beating us...

While I agree in principal that many of the accolades being given to McNabb are indeed premature, you cannot dispute that he is a top ten QB in the league. You can roll out his numbers until you are blue in the face, but he has led the most dominant team in the NFC East this decade.
If Mcnabb was wearing silver and blue with a star on his helmet instead of the eagle most of you would be kissing his jock just like everyone else. You can complain about a supposed ESPN bias all you want to, but every fan base of every professional team believes that ESPN is biased against their team.
I laugh at the comments on this board all the time, a lot of you guys are quick to point out deficiencies in officiating for the Cowboys and then point to the Redskin fans about what a bunch of crybabies they are for complaining about the referees.
I think many fans in every sport cannot drop the homer glasses that are covering their eyes, and that discolors their opinions. On the flip side some people are so adverse to being a homer that they become hyper-critical of their team. It always amazes me, the wide spectrum of emotions fans in general can display. I submit to you, before you "hate" a person that you do not know nor will ever know to try and be objective. You might not get as worked up and will significantly lower your risk of blowing a gasket!!!
I want to add that I am not trying to single anybody out with my comments. How you react and feel about this team certain players etc. is your business alone. It makes no difference to me how you feel or what kind of a fan you are, I appreciate everyone's opinion. I don’t agree with many of them, but I respect your right to have one. I guess that is why I like seeing fans from opposing teams frequent this board. I appreciate their point of view without seeing all of the "your team sucks" waste of bandwidth posts.
Ok, let me climb down off this box before someone pushes me off. LOL

Nah, he is a loser! 1-3 in NFC Championship Games, he lost a Super Bowl he should have won. Bledsoe is a bit streaky but he is 2-0 in Championship Games!
I got sick to my stomach listening to the Monday Night Crew blowing smoke up McNabb's butt, I had to turn the game off! If only he was a Cowboy....
I'd rather have T.O.!

Well, I can admit that McNabb is a very good QB, but I don't like him. And I don't just say that because I'm a Cowboys fan. I think he's a thin-skinned baby who has just as trouble sharing the spotlight as TO. I don't think he's clutch, and I think his "leadership" is terribly overrated...
On a football field, playing against me, he still scares me though.

Which is exactly why I think that we let our dislike get in the way of our evaluations. If you fear him as an opponent then you have to recognize that he has some talents.
I agree that ESPN all but blows the guy, and I too get tired of it. I am saying though that it isn't all hype.
If I had the choice between McNabb and Bledsoe, I take Bledsoe every day of the week.

Bizwah, overall I agree, but you discount the competiveness of the Jaguars too readily. They are competitive against good teams. One of their key receivers Matt Jones was injured in the Redskins game. The Redskins despite their initial games struggle are not a slouch team. With Portis back, and their new offensive system starting to take hold they may be a team to be reckoned with. Moss can make a lot of defenders look pretty silly not just against the Jaguars. Remember that coffin nailing game against us last year when he and Brunnel connected for clutch touchdowns with minutes to spare in our first encounter.
Last year McNabb was dinged up and also not in his best football shape. McNabb has proven that when physically fit and focused he has few peers.
Actually what I am excited about is the answer we had last season to the Eagles defensive scheme. Despite an inferior Oline last year, we held their defense in check and made them pay when they rushed and blitzed us. It seemed that we knew exactly what they were going to do each and every play and had the counter for it. I remember how befuddled and surprised Jim Johnson looked against us.

Well, there's no doubt about what WHCarm says. No matter how things turn out this year, the hypemasters are ignoring (maybe intentionally) that the Eagles have played the dregs of the league to this point. The Giants are the only even decent team McNabb has played so far, and their secondary is very suspect.
But I have to say, I always thought the people who put McNabb down were wrong, and that he was one of the very top QBs in the league. The last year or two, though, I'm starting to agree with the people who say he is overrated. It's not so much what he does on the field, but his goofy personality and his "leadership" skills. When you're having to tell everyone what a leader you are... Well, that's positively Quincy Carter-ish. And the blaming of Owens for everything last year isn't a good sign at all. (Can anyone imagine Bledsoe doing that if something went wrong with TO here? I can't.)
Anyway, this may be the year that the bloom comes off the rose for McNabb. In years past he's had no competition in the East and the last two years he had Owens to blame for things. If he doesn't do big things this year with no excuses and good health, it might be the year Philly turns on him.

Quit hating. I despise the Eagles as much as anyone. But, McNabb is one of the most likable guys in the league. Not to mention, he is by far the best player in the NFL this year, so far. Hands down, the MVP.
If he puts up 300 and 3 tomorrow, what will you say then?

There's no denying that McNabb is having an MVP year......right now.
Hopefully, his collapse starts this week with some good defensive pressure on him and some stellar play from our secondary.
I remember Drew Bledsoe having an MVP year at this time last season. That was until Flo got injured and our o-line collapsed. Everyone was saying Bledsoe was over-rated too.
It's early, alot can happen. Let's start Donovan's slide this week.
Go Cowboys!!

Nicely thought out post. I have to disagree with you on one aspect though.

The bias against the Cowboys is very real and its based on a very rational line of thinking. The Cowboys are the most popular team in the NFL among real fans. (In real fans, i am discarding only the folks who go an buy the jersey of the Winning SB QB each year just to look cool).
Because of that popularity, there is the inevitable flip-side of resentment from other fans. Even though the Cowboys have a larger fans base than any other team, it's size is not 32 times larger. Therefore the "anti-cowboy" fanbase is much much larger than the Cowboy fan-base.
Talk to a Giants fan. They hate the Cowboys. Talk to a Denver fan. They hate the Cowboys. Talk to a Raven, Viking, Bears or Cleveland fan. They hate the Cowboys.
I am a Cowboy fan. I hate the Skins, Eagles, Niners, Packers, Steelers and Giants. Personally, I'm pretty ambivalent about the a number of NFL teams though.
There are very very few real NFL fans who are ambivalent about the Cowboys.
This leads to two results:
1) These media guys are fans themselves it's extremely difficult to completely suppress likes and dislikes and often the underlying dislike for the Cowboys will bleed through.
2) More importantly, siding against the Cowboys caters to the majority of football fans out there, which is their job. To cater to the largest audience possible.
Finally, it's the second point above that further justifies the first point...allowing for more bias to be exposed.
Honestly, there's not much wrong with that. It is their job to attract the most people. This is a very successful way of doing it.

First off, me pointing out what I pointed out in the original thread was not meant to imply that Bledsoe is better or that he has played better teams or anything like that. But the key difference there is that no one is going around saying Bledsoe is having an MVP year or that he is so great and so much better off without the best WR in the league, etc.
Second, no, I would not be riding the McNabb bandwagon if he were a Cowboy. There are two things I really want in my QB. The first is accuracy. Generally, I would like to see my QB completing over 60% of his passes and not have them all be dump off passes. The second thing I like is leadership. He has to be respected, he has to work his butt off, he has to be tough and confident and elevate the play of those around him.
Aikman was both of these things. That's why I liked him so much. A guy like Carter was neither of those things and that's why I never supported him. McNabb is also neither of those things and that's why I would never support him. Bledsoe is not the most accurate guy (though he does have several seasons over 60%) but I do see him as that leader type of guy, so I can support him.

300 yards is doable when your trying to fight your way back into the game.
3 interceptions is almost a given.

Very well put and I stand corrected on my earlier post. Looking at it in that light I understand the basis for your bias against the boys argument. I believe that many Cowboys fans take this bias far to seriously though.
This is why I frequent this board. I have had quite a few discussions on this board where my opinions were altered because an opposing view was offered and made me pause and think. This is much better then the "your wrong because you suck" arguments that seem to be prevelant.
Props Erik, I would discuss this team with you anytime.

I don't know about all that, but I'm sure glad he's on my team.
I wasn't enamored by his game today. I'd like to see him be more consistent. That being said, he was playing a pretty damn good defense and didn't have much help from his running game. All in all, he did what he needed to do and put up some decent numbers.

I think this tidbit, from the cowboys own website, might shed some light on why so many cowboys fans love to hate McNabb
Oct 9 Rob Phillips, of DallasCowboys.com, reports Philadelphia Eagles QB Donovan McNabb threw for 354 yards versus the Dallas Cowboys in Week 5, marking an all-time high of passing yards given up by the franchise. McNabb surpassed the previous record of 345 yards he had set in 2004.

McNabb has close to 300 yards more than the next passer on the yardage charts. He is good, get over it.
