View Full Version : Double TE Set
I thought the 2 TE set was going to allow for an offense that can run the ball well and allow for a lot of short passes to big guys that can gain help move the chains.
I expected a more ball controlled offense yesterday.
The run game was good against an eagles team at home that does well at stopping the run.
Expected to see more easy high % passes over the middle to keep the chains moving, would have helped bledose get rid of ball and would have added to the smash mouth type play that would might have worn down the eagles defense, with an occassional deep throw.
I just thought we would see more passing to TE position than we have.

Fasano has been invisible in the passing game...

I think they are finding it tough to run, since they got 2 ragdoll's at TE in terms of blocking ability......
ala Jay Novacek....just to light in the loafers to really play smashmouth football.......
our 2 present TE are big enough, just not plain old mean and nasty enough

That must be why our run game is performing so well.

Dallas has been running better then they have in years.

I'm glad someone brought this up, because I thought quick passes to the TE were going to be a key weapon against the blitz.
I also thought the two TE set base offense was the whole basis of drafting Fasano so high. But he's been absolutely invisible. If he wasn't going to be a pass-catching weapon, we should have gone a different direction in the draft and signed an adequate, above-average journeyman TE in free agency.

agreed on the running game.....but that Kudo's goes to offensive interior line...
My problem is with pass protection.....should be able to coordinate and "block down" to stuff the blitz right up the middle with the 2 TE sets, the guards should be able to be free to help the center with the 2 TE availaable outside the tackles....
the interior blitz will be brought all year unless we prove we can block it...its the shortest path to our very imobile QB.....heck they are there so quik we couldnt even run a quik slant,

Why is it so hard for some people to understand that this is the exact same offense Dallas ran last year.
Fasano simply replaces Campbell and he's doing it remarkably well for a rookie.
There's a reason that Dallas can actually run the ball this season and it's almost solely on how well the TEs have blocked in the running game compared to last year.

Most of JJ positive runs were up the gut.....ie interior linemen.....
Cant remember to many "stretch plays" and other outside runs that were positive and could be attributed to TE blocking out on the edge

Watch some games from last year.
You'll see numerous times of an OLB or DE that the TE was supposed to block crashing down to stop the play.

I usually agree with you Stanley, but do you really think the only reason we're running the ball better this year is because of Anthony Fasano's stellar blocking?
No way.
But even if it was, we could have gotten another TE just to block in FA. The point was to get two TEs that can actually be offensive weapons, not just blockers.

Haven't noticed how the TE drops into the backfield, as a lead blocker yet, or pulls to the interior, huh?
The Te play has been a huge part of our runnning success. Julius being fully healthy can't hurt either.

I agree with that. I just think you got to play dink and dunk with the way the eagles defense gameplanned. Obviously the rush was getting to bledsoe before wr getting open, so hit the TE on a short route or swing pass to the rb.

.
Because it's not the same exact offense. I don't think we ran one empty back set last year. And last year we only used the 2 TE set 25% of the time. Now we are probably close to 50% of the time. Not to mention that while Fasano isn't exactly Antonio Gates, he's much more capable of a receiver than Dan Campbell was last season.
I didn't see too many issues with the TE blocking yesterday.

Dallas was trying the dink and dunk. Just they were trying to hit WR's on short hot routes, just like they've done all season long.
Problem is that the Eagles defense was getting nice penetration with stunts and blitzes.
The best possible solution would've been using more shotgun and throwing more screens. But Dallas was still dinking and dunking to counter the blitz. They just needed to utilize different "dink and dunk" plays and formations.

Not just Fasano, but Witten also. Witten's seemed to put twice the effort into blocking this season.
Most people just don't realize how pathetic the TE blocking was last season because other blockers made the "he's the problem" list sooner whether deserved or not.
And don't knock Fasano's lack of receiving numbers unless you compare them to the numbers of the other TE, you know, the pro bowl one who is also not being looked at very often in the passing game.
A competent QB would cause a defense to pick their poison and Fasano could have some huge games but unfortunately we won't see that until Bledsoe gets injured, but right now defenses are picking their pleasure which is not worrying about getting beat.

I shouldn't have said "exact" same, I should have said "virtually" the same.
I remember we had a discussion on how often Dallas used the 2-TE set some time ago so I won't rehash it but I still disagree with your numbers.

I got those numbers from Pro Football Prospectus. Dallas utilized Polite and Crayton/Peerless quite a bit last season. When you use a fullback or an extra WR, you're most likely only going to have 1 TE in the game. So the 25% number didn't surprise me when I read it.

Pro Football Prospectus seems to have listed where the player lined up, not which player was on the field. When Fasano lines up in the backfield with Witten as a traditional TE, I still consider that a two TE set although they don't.
It's probably just semantics though and doesn't really matter to this discussion.

Nah, it says right in the book that it counts plays where they use 2 or more actual TE's or H-Backs. Dallas didn't use the 2 TE formation all that often last season. Especially in the first 6 games.
