View Full Version : Drew should take one for the team
I realize BP is loyal to 'his guys'. Is our coach so old and steeped in tradition that he is loyal to a fault? I can understand how a guy in his 60's might think a guy who is 'only' 34 can still get it done (Never mind that with the beatings Bledsoe has taken over the years his body is probably that of a 44 year old).
Why is Parcells seemingly the ONLY man in the country that thinks Drew gives us the best chance to win? That is just not true. Romo has the guts, the arm, the brains...all he needs is the support of his organization! How is he supposed to get experience if he doesn't get to play?
If Bledsoe has any decency and truly cared about the fans, he'd suffer a phantom injury the next time he is hit and let the kid in the game. He has to know the whole world is clamoring for the kid.
We fans also need to start the "Rohhhhh-mohhhhh, Rohhhhh-mohhhhh" chants before the opening kickoff and throughout the game when the Boys play at home.

Not gonna happen.
Queue Superpunk! :p: ;)
If any one of the fans who do detailed analysis of the game can come up with the time Drew takes in the pocket for each play, it gives us a clear understanding of his weakness. Against a blitzing defense in a hostile environment when you are supposed to get rid of it in 3-5 secs even if there is no play, it seams like Drew held the ball for very long time.
Can anyone comeup with this stat?

He wont do it.
He feels that he can surround Bledsoe with the perfect game plan.
Why else would he keep him at starter?
He says that he doesnt think QB is the problem... because he points to other things that caused Drew to fail. You know what... good QB's make the best of a situation - Drew doesnt.
Just a little mobility and some, just some of those BAD plays dont happen

I remember watching Romo in preseason and thinking "Wow, he sure gets rid of the ball quickly." Methinks a lot of the 'Keep Bledsoe' crowd here on the board forgot about that.

But... for the first time probably ever, he didn't sound absolutely adversed to taking a strong look at Romo in his PC. I actually think he might do it at some point, because we all know another Bledsoe meltdown will come at one point or another.

They key there is "preseason". You have no idea how Romo would have reacted in the crapstorm that happened in Philadelphia on the weekend.

Keep saying it.
Maybe eventually it will stop being ridiculously false.

That's the crux of it. We know it's coming, BILL knows it's coming. So why wait for it? Take him out of the equation, already! Even IF Romo screws up badly it will be no different than Bledsoe doing it. The point is, Romo will learn and improve. How much improving is Drew going to do after 14 years?

Its pretty simple. Romo gets rid of ball quickly. THAT would nullify alot of what the Eagles did to us.
With Drew they knew where he would be, they knew he would hold on to ball forever. That will never work to our advantage.
I am not saying Romo will save us. But we will surely die another death with Drew.

1) Yes but it was against first teamers
2) It can't be much worse than the lost fumble and three picks Bledsoe gave us.

How many wins are you willing to trade for one or two missed opportunities? I don't even know if Romo beats the Texans at this point.
Point is, you have to be absolutely sure before you make a decision like this. If Bledsoe just had a bad game, maybe he bounces back and has a great season. The uncertainty of that situation about matches that of Romo's... you might as well see where Bledsoe goes from here, because we know he can win big games. Whether he actually does or not is a point of contention.
I have a feeling that we'll all know when it's Romo's time. It will be pretty obvious, and this week ain't it. And I doubt it'll be after the Texans game.

My god - what fantasy world are you living in?
Bledsoe, like EVERY OTHER NFL PLAYER, is here to make a lot of money and compete - he's not here because he is fond of the fans.
As for the age, many QB's have been successful at 34 and beyond.
My final comments are about Romo. I too would like to see him play, and I think he has a good chance of success. But your comments suggest that he is a sure thing and that the only thing preventing certain success is lack of support from the organization.
The reality is that the only certainties about Romo are that he has looked good in the preseason and we don't know to what degree that will lead to success as a starter.

Quitting physically? No. But mentally?
He absolutely clocked out of the Jacksonville game in the fourth quarter. Threw a pick, it's called back and he throws another one. Played an atrocious second half against a Philly secondary he TORCHED last year at this time.
I don't think it's a conscious thing, like he's saying 'I'm outta here.' But you've got to wonder what's going on when these things start happening like this.
your comments suggest that he is a sure thing
I absolutely am not saying Romo is a sure thing. He's an unknown thing.

We still had a chance to win despite the latest meltdown. And that was probably our toughest game of the regular season.
Look, I'm not saying that Bledsoe is completely dependable. But even when he played about as bad a game as he's played since he's been here, we still had the ball at the 6 with 30 seconds left with a chance to tie in a hostile environment. I simply don't think that game has shown us that we're all that far off. There are things that can be done, improvements can be made.
Bledsoe can get rid of the ball quicker. I thought he was doing that the first 3 games. He's been so set in his ways for 14 years that you can expect sometime he will revert to his old habits.
The OL can protect better. We've seen that. We had 3 sacks through 3 games, then 7 in one. One of those against probably the best DL in the league. Which one's the anomaly?
Now, can Romo possibly be better? Yes... Can he be worse? Yes. He's going to go through growing pains. Even if he came in for one game and had a decent game, when NFL defenses get him on film against real live regular season competition, they're going to gameplan against him. Romo is an unknown. An x factor. And admittedly sometimes it's exciting to think about what the unknown can bring. Everyone's optimistic.
Can Bledsoe be better? Yes... Can he be worse? He hasn't played a worse game since he's been here. And I don't remember him being worse over his career.

Let's see, you tell us that it's not true that Bledsoe gives us the best chance to win. You tell us Romo has all the tools. You tell us that ALL he needs is the support of the organization.
Oh well, I'll take your word that you weren't suggesting Romo was a sure thing.
Cut Parcells a little slack. It's not as easy a decision as you indicate - the growing pains associated with throwing in an unproven, untested QB potentially could destroy the season very early on.
Parcells also realizes that applies to the status quo as well, and he isn't going to let this go on forever - he will make the change if Bledsoe continues down the same path.

This is exactly right. I started to post something similar to this in another thread but I was so "down" I said screw it. Whoever was calling the offensive plays was, well, OFFENSIVE. He didn't give us a chance.
You could see, even on TV, the way the defense was set up that if the WR just ran a quick slant, Bledsoe could take the snap and hit him for a quick 5 yards. The quick slants and pitchouts to the RB to get around the middle blitz should have been run over and over again until the D choked on it. Once they back off, then you have time to run the offense we were trying to run.
I blame the play caller for this loss. Even the pass at the end of the game was the wrong play. I wanted a pass, not a run, but I was looking for the quick lob pass to the corner to Owens or Witten.

1. Quick Slant might be a good addition.
2. We did run a successful screen Sunday.
3. Roll Out? with Bledsoe?
4. Flea Flicker may work occassionally, but that's not an offensive staple for anyone - I would bet only 2-4 teams have run a flea flicker so far this year.
5. We ran a reverse a few weeks ago with Glenn. In the Eagles game, however, it would likely have been a disaster with the penetration the D-line was getting.
6. Double Reverse ....... combine my comments in No. 4 and 5. Not a regular offensive option, and the Eagles penetration would likely have made the play a disaster.
BOTTOM LINE: If you think the solution to our offensive problems is running a bunch of trick plays then you don't understand the NFL. Trick plays are once in a while things - not plays that are regular offensive options. A trick play here and there does not give you a consistent offense - and that's what the goal is.
Suggesting we overload on trick plays is to ignore the real issues of O-line problems and Bledsoe shortcomings.

Well maybe I should have put a  emoticon on some of the trick plays... my point was to mix things up(not to trick play the game out)... we were too predictable...
We ran one successful screen... GREAT! - do it again until they prove they can stop it
IMO even if a Roll Out wasnt successful it would have had the defense somewhat off balance.... the FACT that we let him sit back there... oh man... and sometimes he held the ball so damn long... ugh....

I can accept that an occassional trick play might add a little twist, but my point was that the lack of trick plays is not the problem with the offense. If we can't keep the defense out of the backfield and if Bledsoe can't make good decisions or learn to throw the ball away, no amount of trick plays or new wrinkles will help. Trick plays are just a cover up for the real problems - and those real problems could potentially cause trick plays to have disastrous results.
I'll go along with a little added variety, but that's just a band aid - we have to fix the real issues.

Parcells made it his mission to prove Romo's worth and get Romo more experience in the preseason, and at yesterday's press conference the only commitment he made to Bledsoe is that he wasn't going to change "at this moment".
