Those 2 stats are the real gauge of whether we improved this defense or not. Our turnover ratio has got to be greatly improved if the playoffs are in our late January plans. We need Ellis & Wiley to be double digit sackers and we need Newman, Williams, & Hunter to have 6-7 picks each.

We need some easy touchtowns this year! Not the grind it out kind with 5-7 first downs. I mean 80 yard kickoff returns, 60 yard punt returns, 50 yard passing TD's, and long TD runs of 40-60 yards. I want some fumble recoveries for TD's like James Washington was so good at. I want interception TD's like Deion was so great at. Against the really good teams, those big plays usually mean the difference between winning and losing.

Man, I wish the regular season started tomorrow!!!

wow. that seems like a pretty tall order. i'm at the point where i'd be happy to see a repeat of last years effort. the defense kept us in every game until the playoffs. it's BEEN the offense's turn to show us something for several years.

Two dlinemen with double digit sacks is certianly possible, but 6-7 picks apiece for the DB's is asking a lot :D

60 sacks?

When is the last time that any team had 60 sacks in the regular season?

Has a team ever had 60 sacks in the regular season?

FYI... The 1985 Chicago Bears defense, one of the best defenses EVER, had 34 ints and 64 sacks.

While I certainly like to see these numbers, it's quite unlikely.

To use the word "unlikely" is being pretty conservative. How about trying the word - impossible.

Does Zimmer's scheme aim specifically at sacks and turnovers? I think the Cowboys want to see more pass rush pressure and more turnovers but they will not gamble excessively to get them. Therefore, you will not get truly big numbers here.

Hey Hokie, your team made a game of it first half last night.

I guess that's what we can expect on opening day vs Minnesota.

Either Ellis or Wiley may get double digit sacks -- but not both. And six to seven picks EACH for Newman, Williams, etc. would make this the greatest secondary in the history of the game. I think we will see more sacks and more turnovers this year and an improved overall play, but the numbers you're talking about are seen only on Madden 2005...

O.K., so I'm a dreamer. The main point is we need to be way more aggressive and that conservative style of not blitzing much can get us beat and is not very exciting. I watched that '85 Bears team very closely and Buddy Ryan had those guys flying to the ball like crazy. I loved it!! Offenses were afraid of that defense.
Do you think they're cringing at the thought of facing us? NOT!!!

Until we find 2-3 DL that can disrupt and sack the QBs of this league on a consistent basis, we are going nowhere fast!!

I think Ellis gets 12, Glover 8, Wiley 7, Coleman, Ogbogu, Carson, Stewart, and are other DT combine for 10. We get another 10-12 on blitzes.

I can see 45-50 sacks. We reach that we'd get more turnovers.

face facts. cowboys don't have a "sackmaster" in the bunch. ellis and glover are the closest thing on this team. these guys are solid all around. good enough to keep us in games. that being said, i'd like to avoid the "excitement" of being burnt deep on a per game basis.

"60 sacks and 30 picks"

Dallas had 60 sacks in 1985. Too Tall Jones, Randy White, John Dutton and Jim Jeffcoat made up the DL that year. Jeffcoat had 5 by himself in the second game against the Redskins.

Pa-lease.

That was 1985.

The historical average for sacks is declining.

The rules liberalizing pass blocking have taken away the ability to reach 60 sacks by a team.

In today's NFL, 40 is a good number.

Plus there's no more "in the grasp" rule, and what used to be intentional grounding is allowed outside the tackles.

Someone asked if any team had ever gotten 60 sacks so that is why I posted that about 1985. I don't think Dallas will better that any time soon, although we can always hope.
