.....and Dexter Coakley subbing back in for several plays late into the 4th quarter?

Were there some injuries that I didn't here about? Or was Parcells desperate to win this game, because it seemed whenever they got a drive going late in the 4th qtr here comes Wiley to put pressure on the QB to stop the drive.

He said Marcellus Wiley needed more work, and I imagine Coakley was in late because Bradie James was in the whole first of the game.

Basically because Wiley has shown nothing so far this preseason. Parcells probably left him there to see if he could even beat guys who will be packing groceries this weekend. Lucky for him he did. I am far from impressed with Wiley and proud to say I was against this signing from the start.

Coakley might have been playing just to show his coverage skills. It seemed like he was in coverage a lot. Parcells might be thinking about using him more in the nickle to cover TE's.

Wiley's going to have the same success Ekuban did ... and that's not because of his talent (or lack there-of).

It's the damned run-first D scheme. The DL is to react to the run first, and then rush the passer. But that instant hesitation to make a decision allows the OL to get their hands on them. That's it. No more pass rush.

This is not the same D Dave Wannstadt and Butch Davis won Super Bowls with.

Wiley has had one good season in the NFL, and it's been three years since he had it. The Cowboys got into panic mode to fill the need at DE, and signed a guy who is not very good. He will be out of the starting lineup by midseason.

its pretty similar...Butch Davis was our coordinator in 1993, we had 32 sacks as a team that yr...we've only topped 40 a couple of times since 1989 (when Wannsted and Jimmy came in)...the only decent sack total yrs I recall were 1992 (I think we had 44) and 1994 (around the same number)...all the other years were 20's and 30's

he's had more than one good season, please check your facts

he was a part time pass rusher his 1st 3 seasons in the league (coming from Ivy League school)...he had double digit sacks in back to back seasons in 00 and 01, and in a 4yr span had 34 1/2 sacks...he's also forced 13 fumbles and picked off 2 passes

He certainly does not look good thsi pre-season and that is dissappointing. Hoever, I really don't see any reason to be "against" the aquistion. I'm all for low-risk, high reward deals. It may not work, but I think it's better than the alternative of staying with Ek for another year.

IMO, it won't be hard for Wiliey to play better than that.

If we had a realistic alternative, that would have been great, but we didn't. oft-injured Kearse wanted the moon (and got it in Philly). It's not like there was a pile of Charles Haley's out there that we passed on to sign Wiley.

We improved the position without screwing up our cap, why be against that?

I'd guess Wiley wasnt in great game shape. BP probably wanted to see how he went. I think he is/was seriously considering playing Kenyon Coleman and Kalen Thornton a lot at the side opposite Greg depending on situation.

Dexter seems to have been beaten out by Bradie James. For BP, size matters. To Dex's credit he made a lot of plays.

I think we play Nors' 3-4 a lot. And I like that. I wanted to be a 3-4 OLB going to college but was a tad light in the pants for it so played safety. Instead of killing QBs I had to chase Wrs.

He's had a total of 9 sacks the last two years. (2002,2003)

In 2000, he had 10.5, which is pretty good.
In 2001, he had 13.0 which is good.

So he had two good years. My mistake.

In 7 years he has had 41 sacks. That's roughly an average of 6 sacks a year. That's a sack every 2.5 games roughly. Not all that great.

Now, 41 sacks minus the two good years (we'll give him 24) that leaves only 17 sacks over the other 5 years of his career, or about 3.5 sacks a year, a sack every 5 games roughly. Not that great.

See, I don't see much, okay.

He had two good seasons, and those were in 2000, and 2001. Since then he has averaged 4.5 sacks his last two years in the league. Is that really much better than Ekuban.....

This signing was a mistake.

This signing was a mistake.

He was a cheap pickup and potential big time upgrade over Ekubust. The key words being cheap and potential. Which is a kind way of saying we get to go thru the entire process of finding a pass rushing DE again next off season. DAMMIT!!!

If that's true, I wish like hell they'd panicked to find a CB.
