Defensive end Simeon Rice (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=3549), one of the NFL's most dominant pass rushers over the past decade, was placed on injured reserve by Tampa Bay on Wednesday, prematurely ending his 2006 season and possibly his six-year tenure with the Bucs.

Rice, 32, missed the past two games with a left shoulder injury. The 11-year veteran had missed just two games total, neither because of injury, in his previous 10 NFL seasons.

The exact nature of the injury, suffered on Oct. 8 at New Orleans, has never been divulged. In recent days, though, both Rice and coach Jon Gruden strongly suggested the three-time Pro Bowl performer might need surgery to correct it. While it has not been confirmed Rice will undergo surgery, the move to place him on injured reserve certainly indicates that is a strong possibility.

Two weeks ago, when he was attempting to play through the pain, Rice acknowledged he was struggling and said he was being forced to "play like a one-armed bandit."

Fourth-year veteran Dewayne White (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6400), who has played well the past two weeks and had an especially strong outing in last Sunday's victory over Washington, will replace Rice in the lineup.

There were whispers this spring that Rice's time in Tampa Bay might be growing short, even suggestions the Bucs would entertain trading him, and he was the subject of trade speculation right before the league's trade deadline last month. The shoulder injury, which could mean a long rehabilitation, and the fact Rice will be 33 in February will add to the speculation about his future with the franchise.

Rice has one season remaining on his contract, at a base salary of $7.25 million for 2007, and an exorbitant salary cap charge.

A superb pass-rusher, Rice will finish this season with a career-low two sacks. He also had 21 tackles, four forced fumbles and one pass defensed.

The former Illinois star, a first-round draft choice of the Arizona Cardinals (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=ari) in 1996, Rice has 121 career sacks. He has posted eight seasons of double-digit sacks, with a career high of 16½ in 1999, and entered 2006 with five straight seasons of 10 or more sacks.
The colorful and eminently quotable Rice, who this summer told ESPN.com that he was "the bar" by which all pass-rushers should be measured, was often criticized early in his career for being a one-dimensional defender, a guy who ignored the run and only wanted to collect sacks. But when he left Arizona and signed with Tampa Bay as an unrestricted free agent in 2001, he improved his play against the run, even if most of his critics never gave him ample credit for doing so.

In 160 games, Rice has 584 tackles, 37 forced fumbles, eight fumble recoveries and five interceptions.

Bucs place Simeon Rice on injured reserve
By FRED GOODALL

AP Sports Writer
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Simeon Rice's streak of consecutive seasons with double-digit sacks ended at five Wednesday when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed him on injured reserve because of a lingering shoulder injury.
The three-time Pro Bowl selection had never missed a game because of injury before sitting out the Bucs' loss to the Carolina Panthers on Nov. 13.
Rice ranks second among active players with 121 career sacks, but he's been slowed by a shoulder problem that may require surgery and had a career-low two this season. Rice started eight games, finishing with 21 tackles and a team-high four forced fumbles.
The team announced the decision to place him on injured reserve before heading to Dallas to face the Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day. Dewayne White, who shares the club lead with four sacks this season, will replace Rice in the starting lineup.
Coach Jon Gruden was asked Tuesday if Rice, who had not practiced in two weeks, might need surgery.
"That's certainly an option right now. I think the longer this goes on, it's inevitable that we've got to take a look at what the final analysis is," Gruden said. "It's been very frustrating for him. He's tried to go, he's wanted to go, he wanted to play last week.
"Medically, we chose not to let him play, and we miss him. We miss him, certainly."
Rice's eight seasons with 10 or more sacks are most among active players and tied for fifth all-time in NFL history. He has 58 1-2 since 2002, second in the league during that stretch behind Jason Taylor's 62.

Rice Done for 2006
DE Simeon Rice led all NFL players in sacks from 2002-05 with 56.5
Nov 22, 2006 -

After five straight sack-happy seasons as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ right defensive end, Simeon Rice has finally encountered an obstacle he couldn’t run.

On Wednesday, the Buccaneers placed Rice on injured reserve, ending the veteran defender’s attempt to play through a debilitating shoulder injury. Rice will miss the remainder of the 2006 season and Head Coach Jon Gruden has indicated that surgery could be a possibility.

The move of Rice to injured reserve opens up a spot on the 53-man roster, but the team will not make an immediate move to fill it before Thursday’s game in Dallas. The Bucs will still play with 45 active men on game day, simply naming seven inactives instead of eight.

Rice played in the Buccaneers’ first eight games but was essentially limited by his shoulder ailment all season. After five straight double-digit sack seasons as a Buccaneer, Rice had just two QB takedowns through the team’s first eight games before being deactivated for the Carolina and Washington contests.

This will mark the first time Rice has gone to injured reserve in his 11-year NFL career, and also the first time he has missed more than one game in a season. Thanks to that shoulder problem, 2006 will also serve as his first Buccaneer campaign without at least 11 sacks. Heading into this season, Rice was the NFL’s leader over the previous four campaigns with 56.5 sacks.

Since Rice landed on the game-day inactive list, fourth-year man Dewayne White has stepped into the starting lineup. In two games as the starting right defensive end, White has recorded eight tackles, one sack, one fumble recovery and one pass defensed. He is currently tied for the team lead this season with four sacks.

Rice becomes the sixth player and fourth starter to land on the Buccaneers’ injured reserve list this season. With left cornerback Brian Kelly on IR due to a foot injury, Tampa Bay’s defense is without its starter at two of the most critical positions. In addition, the Bucs’ offense is operating without its opening-day starters at quarterback (Chris Simms) and right tackle (Kenyatta Walker).

Rice concludes his 2006 season with a career total of 121 quarterback sacks. That is second among all active players to the 132.5 posted by the New York Giants’ Michael Strahan.

I thought Rice was injury prone during his 1st couple of years in AZ. I don't know where I got that idea...
