Sorry if this is a repost.

Washington, D.C. (November 29, 2006) -- The National Football League is considering showing some games in High-Definition TV in movie theaters.

That's according to an article from Reuters.

The news service reports that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says he has discussed the idea with National Amusements and other movie theater chains. National Amusements has shown high-def broadcasts of the Boston Red Sox in the past.

The 'baseball in the theater' presentation included vendors selling hot dogs, peanuts and beer.

"We think...that type of marketing could be very successful if we could balance the broadcast," Goodell said at a Reuters media summit in New York.

The commissioner said he's continuing to talk with National Amusements, which is controlled by Viacom, the parent of CBS. With the networks in mind, Goodell said the NFL first wanted to ensure that the rights of the broadcasters were protected.

However, Shari Redstone, president of National Amusements, seemed hopeful that the concept will work out.

"One of the thoughts I had was that we could create a family friendly environment at our theaters ... because there are so few places now for families to get together to watch football," Redstone told Reuters. "We have to work out the logistics. We have to get everybody on board that it is a good idea."

I love it. Hey Commish, don't forget the pizza, nachos, and burgers. Football food.

If it was a big enough game, I'd love to do this now and then. Huge screen, High Def, theater sound, eats, screaming fans, comfy chairs.

Sounds fun to me.

Let's try it for the Atlanta game huh?

I'd pay the price of a movie ticket to see the Cowboys play. Cheaper then going to a sports bar. Maybe under consideration is being a package of tickets like to all the NFL Network games that I can't see--or maybe buy for 3 of the games--whatever.

Sounds like it would be more like an oversize sports bar with only one game to watch. I would probably try it once if they also included more of the game sounds, sideline chatter, cheerleaders etc. and a lot less "expert commentating". Otherwise, I will watch my HDTV.

Well...no. This is dumb. Any modern sports bar worth its' salt has huge hi-def screens anyway...many of them quite large. That's where you need to go to see a game on a big screen if you are feeling sociable. A garden variety movie theater is too confined with no move-around room. Perhaps you could make a case for the "movie tavern" approach, and let them give it a shot, but I still think they would fall short, based on the ones I've been to around here.

The Local Movie Grills in the Dallas area need to be proactive, and look into this. They better be ok with me dropping "S" and "F" bombs we we screw up though.....

I used to manage a few theaters about 3 years ago,, and I mentioned to some people.. that I would like to show Monday night Football at the theater,, Monday's are typically dead nights, and I thought hooking up a Sat. and delivering it to the big screens, along with some vendors and such.. would help out the dead monday night... I got told no..

Maybe I didn't talk to the right people!!

I think this would be excellent IF like an above poster said, we got more raw footage and sounds from the sidelines than I could get from watching my 56 inch HD at home.

Since it is in a theater you could even rate it PG-13 or R so that we could mic up the sidelines and listen to the swearing players and stuff or the coaches blasting some guy for blowing a play unedited.

I can almost forsee new theaters built just for this purpose. Sports Theaters. The NFL is trying to make a buck anywhere now.

When I first read this, I thought, "That's a great idea."

Then I thought, "Can you imagine the fights when the guy beside you or in front of you keeps standing up and cheering his team when your is getting it's butt handed to them, or vice versa ?"

No beer might help.

I still think the Movie Grill venue is a perfect fit. And they sell liquor!!!!!!

This would be a good alternative to Directv Sunday Ticket, which is getting rediculously expensive. I live in South Florida, and I hate going to Sports Bars to watch Cowboy games. Nothing but Giants and Redskins fans here, and they are incredibly annoying when they outnumber you 100 to 1.

Truly a great idea. I would go to the theater in a heart beat to see the Cowboys on the big screen.

So would I. Cowboys in HD on a 100 ft screen sounds good to me.

If you guys want to see the Cowboys on a 100 foot screen, then some entrepenurial spirit needs to build a SPORTS BAR with a 100 foot screen. It is INSANE to even suggest watching a live football game in a cramped movie theater.

I want them to show the game in drive in theatres. That way, I can make out in the car with my wife while I watch the game.

Yes, but when you yell "Oh crap!" the guy in the next car will yell "turn her over!!"

I love the idea...especially if the theaters were like the Alamo Draft house...
