also...is there any features i need to make sure to look for that might indicate quality?

thanks locked and loaded........the reason i was asking for help is i'm planning on buying the wife one for christmas and have no clue about what to look for as far as quality.

mhmm. you coudl alwasy go on circuitcity.com and check the ratings. i also think that kodak has a nice little set up called the kodak picture share or something like that. i recomend circuitcity.com they ahve reviews written by customers, they may help. or find a camera forum.

Features I really like include Optical Zoom (digital isn't that good) and size. Casio and Canon are my two favorite brands, with Casio winning out on pocketability. The Exilim is a nice camera that's easy to carry around, but it's a bit higher than what you've budgeted. Take a look at the Canon A540:

You can find it on the web and in stores for around 165. This model has optical zoom, 6 MP and it's your basic point and shoot. Plus it uses SD cards which are very inexpensive now.

brands to reference and explore:
nikon, panasonic, canon, fuji, olympus and minolta.

brands i'd run from:
vivitar, dvx, mitsubi, and others you've likely never heard of before.

brands that are ok, just not my "top shelf" brands:
kodak, sharp, and to a degree, fuji (although i listed it up there)

get at least 5 or 6mpx and get a good range on our telephoto.

for just general use, kodak can be a good buy for the $ feature wise.

if it were me, canon, pentax or panasonic. if none of those were making me happy, olympus, nikon and minolta.
