What kind of impact will Vinny starting have, I believe he has around 4 million in incentives?

I'm curious - why would guys still on the team have dead money associated with them? For example, Torrin Tucker has a dead money charge of $5,000. I can see a guy like ReShard Lee that had been let go last year so he might potentially have a dead money charge even though he's back on the team but how come guys like Tucker, Copper, etc have a dead money charge?

He was cut last year.
Thos eminimal dead money amounts are the undrafted free agents miminal signing bonus hits that have been cut over the past 2 years. .

Correct. The dead money for the current players who were previously cut and re-signed is the hit for their previous contract(s).

Adam said in another thread that all incentives hit in the contract year, UNLESS they put you over the cap and THEN they carry over. Sorry, but I'll wait for Adam to confirm it.
This came from a thread about Vinny's contract on 8/7.
Adam wrote, "NLTBE incentives hit the cap in the season they're earned, if the team has cap space. If not, they "overage" (anything that would put the team over the cap) is applied to the next season. So if he earns those incentives, we'll take the hit this season, assuming we have that room under the cap."

The salary cap has increased significantly. It was $56 million back in 2000 when we carried Troy's $8 bill in dead money.

That is correct. Here's the applicable portion of the CBA --
(ii) At the end of a season, if performance bonuses actually earned resulted in a Team’s paying Salary in excess of the Salary Cap, then the amount by which the Team exceeded the Salary Cap as a result of such actually paid performance bonuses shall be subtracted from the Team’s Salary Cap for the next League Year.
And here's the next paragraph, which is the loophole that allows teams to push cap room from one year into the next --
(iii) At the end of a season, if performance bonuses previously included in a Team’s Team Salary but not actually earned exceed performance bonuses actually earned but not previously included in Team Salary, an amount shall be added to the Team’s Salary Cap for the next League Year equaling the amount, if any, by which such overage exceeds the Team’s Room under the Salary Cap at the end of a season.

So at this point, should Vinny stay healthy, we will have a good sized chunk of that cap room gone. I'd say we should add a few incentives and extend a few contracts with the extra cap space.
Thanks.

They're not dead money because they're among the current players listed, as are Woodson (PUP), DiNapoli (PUP) and Carson (suspended). That list includes everyone and everything that is counting against our cap right now.

Yeah, but Bobby Taylor ain't exactly competing against Jameel Poweel and Pete Hunter in Seattle. Marcus Trufant and Ken Lucas are one of the best young corner duos in the league. Seattle only paid Taylor a $3 million signing bonus. We could have received a hometown discount and cut him next year if things didn't work out with little dead cap space damage. I think our young corners will get better as the season goes on but I would have preferred a little more of a safety net at one of the most important positions in football.

The way Bill put it just this week is you sign a guy in free agency and "you're stuck with him" for four or five years. It's not like these over-rated, over-paid corners are settling for a one year contract.
Taylor wanted to come to Dallas. Said so anyway. If the price and contract length had been feasible, he probably would have been looked at as security while Bill gets the young corners up to speed. What he ended up settling for in Seattle may not have been what he was asking at first.
Tho actually, I think I read there was no interest on Taylor at all in Dallas?

I don't think signing Mario Edwards was something we wanted to do. Hunter would have taken his job if he did not get injured.

Yeah, but if Taylor took a $3 million bonus for Seattle, maybe the Cowboys could have gotten away with a $2.5 million bonus because he wanted to return home. Even if we cut him after his first year in a four-year contract, that's about $1.8 million for a cap hit. Peanuts in my mind. I think teams nowadays should sign a few key veterans with the full knowledge that they'll probably eat some of that contract. Small cap hits don't kill ya, it's the ones like Troy Aikman being forced to retire before his time or what almost happened with Larry Allen that take down the team. I just think the Cowboys should have gone for a little bit more depth at corner just to be safe, especially because they were in good cap shape.
