View Full Version : If Henson had Vinny's stats.

We'd all be peeing in our britches. I've got to give old Vinny his props where props are due. No way in hell would Henson have had a game like Vinny did yesterday. He's not to that point yet. I was very impressed with his arm and his ability to read the field. I don't see an old guy when I watch him throw the ball.
I was wrong about Vinny with my initial assesment. I only hope that when and if Henson plays he'll perform as well as Vinny did yesterday.

The problem is Vinny's age.
I think we would all be a lot more excited if we felt that Vinny was going to be around for 4-5 years.
It's simply hard to get too excited when you consider his age and pending retirement. Unless perhaps we were on a SB run...which we are not

In my newly found opinion, I think Vinny has a couple more years left in him and I think Parcells may feel the same way. If we can protect this guy, he'll have a great season.

I also think that Vinny is strong enough to take a hit.
He could very well last 2-3 seasons. But that is still not long enough :)

I understand that the guy won't play for 10 more years. Even though Bill Parcells says that he can throw the ball until he's 50. I just think that it was really a good move by Parcells to bring Vinny here. I was hoping we'd get Jeff Garcia and Corey Dillon in FA. Now, I am glad we got Vinny.
He could be the QB next year too, IMO and give the young guys time to learn and develop. Truly impressive for a guy his age.
I am more of a Romo fan from what I've seen between him and Henson, but I really think Vinny is going to actually be an assett, where Henson would be a liability at this point.

He is certainly an upgrade over Carter. Funny thing is, so many people were down on Testaverde when we signed him, not just because of his age, but because he was 2-6 as a starter last year, despite his 90 QB Rating. People found it hard to understand, how could he have a 90 QB Rating, and only win two out of eight games. See yesterday as the perfect example. Again, Testaverde did his part just like last year as a Jet.

Agreed. He's definitely an upgrade, especially with the revamped line.

He is the best QB we have had on this roster for some time. That includes Aikmans last season.
He really throws a nice ball, is accurate and has great awareness.
Our offense should be potent this year.

It has to hurt Acheman to see a guy Vinny's age doing what he is doing.
I seriously wander if Acheman will ever consider returning to the game.
It's got to be tempting.

Vinny does not have a degenerative back problems Troy encountered. There is no doubt in my mind Troy would have loved to continue to play but his back problems had gotten to the point that even the epidural treatments was no longer helping him. Vinny’s biggest injury was his Achilles but considering Vinny has never been a big runner it really had little effect on his ability to play QB

You've always been an Acheman homer, Dooms.
I like you for that. You stick with your guns. (most of the time)
;)
I do see your point regarding his back.

I caught myself thinking, while watching the game yesterday,
"it is so cool to see a competent QB in Dallas again". It has
been a long while since that has been the case.
VT has a strong, accurate arm and understands
how to play the position. And he has some fine receivers.
Now if BP will just let JJ and Lee dominate the running
game mix this offense should be able to put up some
staggering numbers.

I like troy when he was with UCLA and I liked it the day we drafted him and after watching him play his career with us I have nothing but good memories of him. I think we were fortunate to have a player like Aikman who was about team and not me me me all the time.

The old man has got to get his due--he deserves it after yesterday even if it was a loss.
16 completions to AB & KJ alone...is that crazy or what?! Last year we'd have been lucky for 4 to come their way during the whole course of a game let alone 8 catches for each and both 100+ yard games. Our girl scout would have been over 100 yards to had he come down with that 2nd TD.
I haven't felt this comfortable in our passing attack since Irvin went down and we had the great one leading us down the field.

I questioned BP when he brought in Vinny and I was wrong.
I don't think I'll be wrong to question him about giving JJ and Lee instead of George. Sometimes you even have to question yourself. I am crossing my fingers that BP makes the right move here.
I honestly thought EG would have more in him and actually saw some logic in starting him.
Now, I see no logic in starting EG.
Save him for the blowouts.

All the 355 yds are great - but gosh, we need the points! And with the showing of the defense, we're gonna need everything we can get on the offense.

I think is was the concussions that actually forced him out. He probably would have kept playing if it was just his back....but the guy got to the point that if you jiggled him he would get a concussion.

I have heard Troy say many times that the concussions were not the issue the back however caused him a lot of pain and limited his throwing. I'm getting this right from the horses mouth. Troy has said he felt to much was being made out of the concussions. You can disagree but those were Troys comments.

But Troy did not necessarily make the final decision. It was coaches that did.
I remember that Troy wanted to continue to play.....but nobody would pick him up....he got zero offers. And this included his close buddy Norv Turner.
Norv was quoted as saying that Aikman needed to retire because of the concussions.
I agree with you that Aikman did not see it as a problem....but everyone else did....and they were concerned for his long term health....and rightfully so.

If Henson had Vinny's stats and we still only scored 17 points I would still be disappointed. I love the kid, I am driving his bandwagon, but if we aren't putting points on the scoreboard all the yards in the world don't mean squat.
Vinny was better yesterday than I imagined he could be, if and only if, we can score. Now, I don't put it all on him. We got conservative in the red zone. We had some ill timed turnovers and penalties.
That doesn't change the fact that we did not score enough and we had ample opportunity to do so.

Let's be honest with ourselves here (I'm a big fan too).
Troy retired because those he was interested in playing for didn't show similar interest. He was basically forced out.

When his age will really show is towards the end of the year when those 40 year old legs have been doing it for a couple of months.

You are correct and did not mean to imply that Troy left on his own terms only saying based on comments from Troy that his back problems had more to do with him struggling than the concussions.

I do agree that Dallas went conservative in the redzone. we started running more of the jumbo package instead of trying to spread the viking defense out by using the 3 WR set

We were running the ball on 3rd downs in the red zone and when we did throw we were throwing it short and hoping YAC was a friend. The rest of the game we played aggresive and had them on their heals.

I understand your concern here, Sarge. I really do. But I honestly think this guy has a shot at lasting most of the year. Of course, he is subject to injury just like anyone else. Man, what does it take Hos?
No inters, no fumbles, one sack...
I agree we could have and should have scored more points. But I think you'd be so giddy had Henson thrown for 355 yards, you wouldn't be seeing straight.
I understand about the points. 4 out of 5 times you have that kind of production on offense you win the game. I agree. It's disappointing that we squandered opportunities for points. But VT did his job just fine - nothing to complain about.
The points will come as long as he keeps up what he was doing yesterday.

I am one of Henson's biggest supporters on this forum, but I have advocated QBs need more than stats.
I care more about the wins than anything else, but a close 2nd has to be that the offense scores points.
