Has anyone else been pleasantly suprised by the play of our nickle and dime cornerbacks?

Jones and whatever the other guys name is were both making decent plays the first two weeks . . .

Jones made a great open field tackle yesterday, and the other one broke up a pass in the end zone.

I'm suprised neither of them have been burned yet . . .

What say you?

They have been a pleasant surprise....both seem to have physical ability, with PT they should get better and better...

I mention them in my latest nfldb column:)
They have done suprisingly well.
Reeves made a great play on the ball in the end zone where most rookies freeze up.
Its crazy how BP kept pushing Powell and Thornton then these two guys are the ones who play.

Given the rule change that DB's are having to deal with I felt our guys did a pretty good job, not great but nothing to hang your head about either.

hunter had a quiet day yesterday. they didn't really test him and that's a good thing. i'd much rather have teams test newman than him. plus hunter made some nice open field tackles and he did have a pick

Really weird.

I would not give up on Thornton. He is just a little slow, few problems...everything will be okay...

Heck yes... I was afraid this would be a big headache all year after Mitchell unexpectedly washed out. As we saw last year when Hunter struggled so badly early in the year, bad nickelback play can really kill a defense. But Reeves looks like he might be a player, and Jones did well yesterday, too.

Wouldn't it be great if we could have a set cast next year and not have to shake up our secondary like we seem to have to do every single year?

I mentioned them in every post I made yesterday, but you always say I'm boring, so you probably didn't read them...:)

However, I was thrilled with Nate Jones and Jacques Reeves...I think they look much more like NFL CB's than Hunter has ever looked...they did a great job batting away passes.

Reeves made a nice play on a slant in the endzone!

Actually...I was thinking that during the game yesterday. But I also cannot remember the guys name.

Another guy who had a nice play was Dixon who came up and forced a fumble that Dallas almost recovered but it barley got out of bounds before the other defenders could get to it. Believe me I'm not trying to make Dixon out as some great safety in this league but considering all the slams he gets by fans it should be noted that he did step up and made a play.

true. the pick was lucky tho. bounced off the WR into his hands. he probably would have had a decent return if Dat didn't knock him out of bounds, lol.

what's more intrestig is remeber last year. Nobody threw to our rookie Newman. But now when we have a another rookie corner instead of just coming out 3 WR every down and testing them they stay on 2 and test everyone else

I think the reason Dixon has been vilified so universally is that because he's only played limited snaps before the season began and his mistakes have been so glaringly obvious because he would only get a handful of snaps.

Give Dixon and Pete some time to get use to the flow of the game and not just their former rolls as situational players and I'd be willing to bet you'll see two of Dallas more improved players by mid-terms.

I hope that ends up being the case, I take no pleasure in coming down on any player so in the case of Dixon I thought it was only fair to mention a play in which he stepped up and made it. As for Hunter the Browns did not go after him that much not sure if it was because he had good coverage or what the deal was.

Our kicking game sucks!!!

When you're giving up 10 to 20 yards on every kickoff, that's amateurish. BP said the guy is on a long leash (which is surprising). I know it's about to send BP to an early grave. You know how he's a stickler for hidden yardage. This yardage is like an elephant dancing on the star in the NFC championship game. He only has 2 things to do (per BP) ... and he is failing.

There was one play near the tail-end of the game where the replay showed Dixon stripping the ball out of the receiver's hands after the officials ruled incomplete. A challenge would have overturned the ruling, I bet. It was a great play by Dixon.

I like Reeves. He was on the field alot against the Vikes too, and while he didn't make a play, didn't get thrown on either.

Jones looked okay to me.

I don't remember one pass being completed on Hunter.

Newman got beat twice, luckily they weren't for completions.

All in all, the secondary looked much better, though Newman getting beat by Morgan isn't cool

I agree. Dixon has taken a lot of abuse and for the most part rightfully so. It was just good to see him step up and make a play and hopefully give him a confidence boost.

Hey I back all of our players, I try not to make excuses for them but I'm more than willing to give them a pat on the back when they do good. Dixon did a good job and deserves credit. God knows the poor boy has been slapped around enough.

I like Jaques Reeves. He ran an electronically timed 10.4 in the 100 mm dash in college, breaking a Purdue school record (Newman ran a 10.3). He has natural speed. I'm not sure why he had such a disappointing 40 time in his pre-draft workouts.

While at Purdue he was usually in man to man coverage and didn't give up many big plays. He is very fast, big ten sprint champion I believe, and does well in special teams play also. Once he gets used to the speed of the NFL he could be a very good CB. At least he is doing well now when the Cowboys really need him. Being a Purdue alum I love to see this. But what is the deal with Hunter? Will he ever be a starter?

Wasn't there an earlier post about the D playing some funky kind of zone on one side and Tnew singled up on the other? If this is the case we may see Tnew get burned a few times, but if the D can put up anything even close to yesterdays performance, it will be worth it.

Newman was being particularly aggressive on outs and was susceptible to double moves. That is typically where he was getting beat. I am suspecting that the Browns picked up something in film and decided to try to exploit it.
