View Full Version : One reason for Vinny's late "meltdown"

I think Vinny Testaverde may have gotten a little tired yesterday in the late afternoon Texas Stadium heat.

Kind of like a jump shooter in basketball gets dead-legs late in the fourth period and starts clanking shots off the front of the iron, 40-year-old Vinny started losing a little velocity on his passes because of it.

There was hardly any breeze in this area yesterday, coupled with the usual orange level ozone alert, and inside that semi-domed stadium it's stifling!

In three weeks, temperatures here should have cooled somewhat, that and it being an earlier game will make some difference, but don't be surprised if we see the same type of thing again.

One thing we can be glad for is that he gets and extra day, and the game is on at night:D welcome back joe gibbs, too bad its gonna be a sour one

That could have been the case but I'll offer no excuses, Vinny threw the 3 ints putting a dark cloud on what was looking to be a very good day for him. After 1 half he had a rating of 119 but as we saw the bottom fell out in the second half. I was pleased with the fact that Parcells had enough confidence in him to throw the deep ball to Glenn with 2:04 left in game which for the most part put the game away. I think Cleveland got the ball back with 40 sec after that series.

Yea, but I was more referring to our next homegame against the New York football Giants after the bye.

I think the heat had a lot to do with the sloppy play of both teams in the 2nd half yesterday. It was reportedly 140 degrees on the field at one point.

It was amazing that we did not see guys cramping up on the field.

Maybe on the two outs to Glenn.. I'll give you that.. but he drilled the post.. it was just a poor read by Vinny and a nice read by Griffin--- Nice rebound all the long ball to Glenn though.. what has to be encouraging.. is that we have 4 legitimate threats to hurt you in our passing game.. no one true stud by I like our versatility

Good point, DCP. I think they said that it was like 105 degrees on the field or something like that. It was hot as hell in the stands, so I know it was hot down there. I could've sworn I saw the devil sitting on the goal post ;) ...

Vaild point but I'm sure you have experianced cramps before and regardless of who is on the sideline when you start to cramp up it hurts like hell. Normally you can get rubbed down and make the cramps stop but normally they return.

Yeah it was hot in stands. My Bro kept complaining how it was much better in New Orleans. He and I moved here recently and since this is not Domed and no AC, it makes a huge difference obviously.

Plus I have been to other games in Detroit, and since its domed too, this is the first game I felt uncomfortable in the stands.

On plus Side, much better looking women in the stands than in New Orleans or Detroit :D

I think Vinny just got too comfortable and started telegraphing that pass to TG. They had run it several times in the game.

The other one was all on him (actually so were the first two). It seemed to have good velocity, just a poor decision.

I don't know. I think the Cleveland DBs just made great breaks on the ball on the 2 out patterns to Glenn. Gotta give the defense some credit, although the 2nd INT was a little off target. I didn't notice any difference in velocity as the game wore on from Vinny. I just think the DBs were able to sit on the shorter pass routes as the game progressed. Those same out patterns were open by 4-5 yds in the 1st half.

The 3rd INT was telegraphed. He locked on to Keyshawn before the ball was snapped and all the S had to do was wait for the ball.

We were running the same plays over and over. This is not college football, the defense will adjust.

I saw that empty backfield set 3 times on 3rd on short. They were just waiting for the passes.

Just because you are running out of the same set doesn't mean you are running the same play. And even if you are, who cares as long as its working? The empty backfield set has been a strength of this Parcells team on 3rd and intermediate, even with QC.

We had about 4 pass plays in the early 90's. Michael Irvin said he used to tell defenses the upcoming play just to see if they could stop it. Being able to execute your offense is a better way to move the ball than trying to constantly trick and fool teams.

Agreed. Same thing with the old Lombardi Packer teams - Teams knew that sweep was coming, they just couldn't stop it. Teams largely resort to trickery precisely because they couldn't out-muscle them.

You can make an occasional TD by trickery, but you can't make a living on it.

you can't blame mistakes, unproductivity, etc.. on things like heat, or fatigue, those are just excuses to scapegoat to. Like my dad always told me, excuses are for pansies.
