View Full Version : Cops Unfolded Right Outside My Door

As I was getting my notes together for 's Mock Draft radio show I got to see all kinds of drama unfold. I heard a loud screech then 2 loud bangs. A 2007 Jetta had tried to make a left turn too fast. He hit the curb then ricocheted back across the road and hit a parked vehicle belonging to my next door neighbor. The impact literally folded the rear axle of Nick's Escape.
Nick (my neighbor) and his family were heading out to the vehicle at the time and basically saw it happen. I was looking out my office window and I saw the guy back up, and I have no doubts he was going to run until he saw that Nick was there.
The driver immediately takes full responsibility and says he works for Enterprise rentals and can get them a car. No problem.
I called 911 and they asked to talk to Nick. Since it was a parked car and no injuries they convince him an officer isn't needed. I went over to Nick to tell him they did need an officer for a Police ID # and this guy talks to me. I guarantee you he was over the legal limit. Not a doubt in my mind, and he's wearing a frat shirt. I'm thinking Saturday is strawberry margaritas day at the frat house.
I told Nick's wife to call 911 back because I can smell alcohol and she does. TPD is not happy but they will send an officer. Now he knows the police are coming and he is trying more and more to get away. He's at fault, he'll take care of everything. Blah, blah, blah. At that point he dumps something out of his pocket and kicks it under Nick's brother-in-law's car. I go to look, it's a coke straw. Nick's b-i-l is an lawyer. He starts insisting that Nick get the cops here. Hey, he would know.
So Nick's on the phone with the guy's insurance company and the insurance card he handed Nick is for an Audi owned by his Dad and worse, it doesn't cover the Jetta. So now he's making up a story that he just switched to Geico and has the real card at home and he can go get it.
I walked over to the impact site at the curb and he comes to talk to me. His story is that his power steering locked up and he lost control of the car. In a 2 month old 2007 Jetta that he is now not at all afraid to drive away from the scene. I flipped my ears at him and said, "do you see these? There are fine tuned bull**** detectors and you are full of it. You haven't made one move to call a tow truck to come get your car with a power steering issue. You're not afraid to drive it. You're drunk, wanted to show off your bad new car and lost control of it."
Dude gets mouthy with me and I told him he'd better shut up or the cops weren't his worst problem. So he goes over to Tim (the lawyer) and starts telling him what a jerk I am being, that I think he's lying, etc. He again assures them everything is cool, he will take care of everything.
Tim walks away to say something to Nick and this kid gets a plastic bag out of his car and takes something out of it and tosses it across the street. Tim and I both saw it. Tim goes and gets it. It's an empty pill bottle. When Tim wasn't looking the kid took the pill bottle and hid it in his car. I saw it.
This merry go round is going on for over an hour. Meanwhile I had something I wanted on E-bay that I had to bid on before it ended, but that's another story. (I got it.) Plus I have the Draft coming up with the radio show.
Finally the Police showed up and as the original caller I talked to them first. I told them all about the straw, the pill bottle, the odor. They get his Driver's license and run a check. He tells them he was maybe doing 15 mph trying to make the turn and his power steering failed. 15 mph doesn't leave skid marks, it doesn't cause you to ricochet off a curb and come back across the street and fold the rear axle on an Escape.
A 2nd officer asks to talk to me and wants me to be clear about the pill bottle, coke straw, etc. I assure him of everything I saw. He runs a check and asks the kid for any other form of ID. Kid produces it. Officer asks him for an Arizona DL and he says he doesn't have one, just the Colorado one. Meanwhile I'm wondering how he got Arizona plates on his car with a Colorado DL. At that point the officer says, "no, your AZ DL is suspended for DUI." The kid assures them that was taken care of. Handcuffs time.
Now there are cop cars all over our neighborhood. Nick is just astonished. I said, "you owe me. You were going to let him leave." DUI unit shows up and guess what? Over an hour and a half after the accident he still fails the breathalizer. Then they search his car and find a bag of cocaine.
So this idiot is handcuffed, in the Police car, and he looks over at me. I just flipped my ears again and smiled.
My kids are sitting on our brick fence the whole time watching this. I finally decided they had seen enough of the drama and told them to come inside. Well, that and I needed to bid on my scope mount before I lost it and had to finish getting ready for the draft.
I literally locked the door, won my e-bay auction, grabbed a glass of water, sat down and called the show.
The Mock Draft was fun, but the mock good guy opera outside was better.

I found out something after I posted this that I did not know. They were selling that Escape. The potential buyer was to be coming today. Not now.

damn, what a story. It is good that you helped your neighbor out...mine are all idiots who watched 2 guys pull a truck up to my house, kick the front door in and attempt to rob me.
3 of my neighbors saw it happen and did nothing about it.
wish you were my neighbor, hos, because I would not have lost my TV that day.

You need to move.:D
If he's got the money to get a lawyer he might as well fight it...what does he have to lose.
He just may get off on a technically or whatever.
The only way he could get burnt is if he was offered a plea bargain and didn't take it and then he fights it and loses...and then he doesn't have the plea bargain anymore.

Hos just double checking. First is this a criminal prosecution or civil?
Just making sure your neighbor's attorney, or the DA, knows about your possible testimony. I'm sure if they don't know, they'd love to have you. The drivers attorney won't want to see you walk in the courtroom.

Nick's attorney will undoubtedly be his brother-in-law unless because he himself was a witness to these things he can't represent Nick.
I can't wait for the DA's office to contact me. I know that's coming.

What if the truth comes out and we find out that Hos is partially responsible for this accident?
My "inside" sources tell me hos was taking the trash out that day. Accidentally dropped the garbage bag. He proceeded to bend over to pick up the bag as this young man was coming around the corner.
While in the process of bending over Hos let out one of his infamous earth quaker/shaker farts.
This caused the imbalance of the drivers car tires, the drivers equilibrium and also caused his eyes to close due to sonic pressure and smell.
The next thing he knows he was hitting a parked SUV.

Scope? What scope? You never mentioned a scope and for what, is this said scope to be mounted on? You are sooo busted!!I got an amazing deal on 2 Winchesters.
One a 30-30, Model 94, pre-1964 edition so it has solid metal works. $200.00.
Looks like this. My all time favorite gun. It had a bit of rust but I worked on it for 4 hours and it looks almost new now.
http://www.chuckhawks.com/win94-2.jpg
The other is a .308, Model 88. If you haven't seen one you're missing out. The stock looks like a bolt action, but it is the smoothest lever action ever. $200.00 as well.
The .308 had a Bushnell zoom scope on it. It is supposed to be sighted to 1200 yards but it was really off. As I started trying to adjust it I noticed that the scope mounts did not match. One was round bottom and short. The other was flat bottom and taller. That meant the scope was pointed downward at a slight angle.
I looked it up on Midway and the correct scope for a model 88 is a one piece mount with a rounded bottom. Weaver #53. I found one on e-bay for 4 bucks.
This is almost exactly what my gun looks like with the Bushnell scope on it.
http://www.gunsandammomag.com/classics/GAmodel88_072505A.jpg
If you look closely you can see it is a clip load. The clip only holds 5 and one cannot be int he chamber. I am currently trying to find out if I can manufacture or buy a banana clip for a full load.
The previous owner had cancer and committed suicide and his wife just wanted the guns out of her house.
So, I got both guns for $400.00.
Score.

Nice Hos. Definite score and a bonus round. You're really getting in to this stuff aren't ya? I love hooded front sights on a carbine. I had to special order my 30-30 because I couldn't find the "rs" model that has no checkering work done. I like the smooth wood look. More western style. However, I like the placement of the checkered work on the .308. Right where you need them and not over done. Great find Hos.
I don't think I've seen a Winchester .308 in person.
BTW......they're both peices of junk. You need to send them to me, scopes included, and I'll dispose of them for ya. Free of charge, of course. :D
