Derrick Knight

COLLEGE POS. HT. WT. PICKED BY ROUND/
OVERALL

Boston College RB 5-9 205 /

Knight is a good outside-the-tackles runner and a decent receiver. He hits the outside holes fast, and has the vision for the cutback lanes. He does not have the size or strength to be a between-the-tackles type of runner, and he still needs to improve his pass blocking.

about the health issues of a back with a zillion carries and 10,000+ yds, an aging Anderson, a hurt Jones.

And we once had "too many" RBs. I guess that's like having too much money to spend.

Here you go...

Knight, Derrick Boston College (HB) 5'8 3/4" 209 Speed 4.72/40

A productive, durable two year starter with a small, stock frame. Has a solid lower body. A shifty runner with good agility in traffic. Patient. Reads and follows blocks well. Short strider who runs with a low center of gravity. Lowers his head on contact. Has the leg strength and balance to break low tackles and keep his feet. Good second effort runner. Lacks dynamic cutting ability, elusiveness, and pure speed -- more quick than fast. Productive receiver -- runs good routes but is not natural in terms of hands -- allows balls to get to his chest -- juggles and drops passes a little too much. Has some limitations as a blocker due to his size, but he's a tough player who strikes aggressively picking up blitzers in pass protection.

He was the 26th rated running back of the 2004 draft according to one rating service.

You had to ask, Junk. :D Gotta fight off my homerism now.

Anytime a local boy (he's from some town in Mass) breaks school records in the best football college program in the region, the kool aid starts getting poured like crazy. Mike Cloud was a similar runner. Folks up here thought Derrick was Heisman material. NFL scouts thought different.

Derrick is an outside runner with about 4.60 speed. He won't give you much in the way of power, but he was one of those deceptive types who can shed tackles you don't expect. He plays bigger than his size and faster than his time, but he piled up his mega yards behind a very good oline and a featured running game.

He absolutely KILLED the Hokies once tho, and showed up Kevin Jones.

But he's a change of pace, not a feature back in the NFL.

Of course, the Cowboys picked up this bum over all the complete package, future All Pro's sitting at home without a job in late September.

I'm surprised more people haven't heard of him. He was the 4th leading rusher in the NCAA last year. He outrushed Kevin Jones, Walter Reyes and Quincy Morgan in the Big East.

Wasn't Lee out of the NFL most of last year?

Kid is a decent RB. A back that with some practice and time could actually play some if need be. Great sign to PS!

Coyle had him #21 Rb last draft. Could suprise and be 3rd down back.

InmanRoshi
09-21-2004, 06:20 PM
Well, I guess we'll find out if his football speed is better than his track speed. He finished as the Big East's 3rd All Time Leading Rusher, despite sitting his first two years behind William Green. Brian Westbrook is 5'8" and ran a 4.57 in his predraft workout. He certainly looked faster than that to me last night.

I would assume he is sharing company with Tony Dorsett and Jim Brown on that All Time Big East rushing list. Then again, Avon Coburne is probably on that list too. Time will tell, but I'm not unhappy using one of 8 practice squad spots finding out.

We're going to need another RB. I have a feeling that this Julius Jones guy is a bit fragile. I was just telling my friend the other day that he looks like he's injury prone.

So much for the 1400 yards someone was predicting.

I still think ReShard is a better RB. JJ may be a bit more versatile, in that he can catch out of the backfield and line up as a WR, but he's no ReShard Lee when it comes to running the ball IMO.

Someone by the nickname of "booze" offered this insight from another board...

I thought it was funny...

"Derrick Knight, RB, Boston College.

Hmmmm...

Let's break it down. BC...a former crony (Coughlin) hangout...was picked up by the Giants and Panthers and what's this...gee, that is strange...got alot of interest from the PATRIOTS during his brief career as a professional churning victim.

I gotta tell you one thing about Parcells, he is not a guy to think outside of his little "circle of trust". You can pretty much scan a transaction list and pick out the Parcellians."

Rodney Dangerfield In Coma After Heart Surgery
82-Year-Old Comedian Showing Awareness

POSTED: 10:05 pm EDT September 20, 2004
UPDATED: 1:08 pm EDT September 21, 2004

LOS ANGELES -- The wife of comic Rodney Dangerfield says he's been in a coma for a couple of weeks after undergoing heart surgery, but has begun to show some awareness.

Rodney Dangerfield

His publicist said the 82-year-old comedian is in stable condition and has been breathing on his own for 24 hours.

Dangerfield had a heart valve replaced Aug. 25 at the University of California, Los Angeles, Medical Center.

There was no mention of a coma in a condition update from the publicist last week.

Joan Dangerfield said in a statement that her husband "slipped into a light coma" while recovering from his heart surgery.

You guys can laugh about it, but is not funny.

Rodney was one comic that I admired. He will be missed.

Here is to praying he comes through this.

Another potential rb, cool....but Rodney Dangerfield in a coma, that sucks :(

Kinda off topic, but didn't Emmitt have a somewhat "slow" 40?

lkelly
09-21-2004, 10:18 PM
Back to topic, Knight plays much faster than a 4.72 or whatever was posted. He outran a bunch of defenders in the Big East last year. Showed quickness in addition to that top end speed.

Not the biggest guy in the world, but he's probably one of those backs you throw in Denver's offense and he gets 1300 yards and rookie of the year.

I guess that's not saying much.

InmanRoshi

And board savour Rashard Lee is a undrafted free agent who couldn't get earn a full time starting spot at Div. II.

Runningback is not a position where a great pedigree is needed to be servicable.

The "circle of trust" is not a new thing for any coach in the league. There was definitely a "circle of trust" with Jimmy and Miami players. Thus the reason we spent a supplemental #1 pick on Steve Walsh. Thus the reason we traded u to the first pick in the draft for Russell Maryland. Thus the reason we drafted Darren Smith and Kevin Williams. Thus the reason we traded for Alonzo Highsmith.

Ya never know, Kevin Jones was testing with mid 4.6 40's. Knight did mid 4.6's at his pro day. I think the guy the Vikes took, Mewelde Moore, had similar times. Not trying to say this guy will turn out to be a stud, just that maybe he shouldn't be totally written off.

Eddie ran a 4.58 at the combine, not bad for a big man. I'm not going to guess what he runs today lol.

Anyone remember Emmitt's 40 times? I thought it was something like mid 4.5, not blazing.

And I agree Rodney was greatness and I hope he comes through this ok....glad he finally got his star on the Hollywood walk of Fame.

He was great in Caddy shack, loved Back to school and what he did for young comedians just getting a start was a great thing.

I remember watching him play on tv...the only thing(s) I remember concretely is thinking to myself that 1)i liked his name 2)he's too small to be a feature back.

I was dissapointed to lose Carthon to the Colts, though Knight could be a capable 3rd RB too.

and Inman-great point on Lee.

If he lasts a full game, gets more than 5 carries for 16 yards and 2 catches for 14 yards he's doing better than our 1st pick

Of course it is not out of the realm of possibility, but at this time, most of the better players are usually picked over by scouts. Combine that with his physical shortcomings and he looks the type of a practice body. With injuries already happening at HB, no need to lose another running scout team.

Maybe he becomes more, that is why there is a PS, but count me in as being skeptical.
