Shaun Williams' status for tomorrow's game against the Browns is uncertain after he injured his knee late in yesterday's practice.
The starting strong safety had to be carted off the field and was taken for an MRI, the results of which won't be available until today.
The injury occurred when Williams attempted to make a diving interception and landed hard on the knee. He was listed as questionable for tomorrow.
If Williams is unable to play, the next strong safety on the depth chart is rookie Gibril Wilson, who had one of the Giants' four interceptions in their Week 2 win over Washington.
Jack Brewer, another backup safety, said that Williams' absence would have a significant impact on the secondary.
"He's the one we all look to back there," Brewer said yesterday after Williams was hurt. "I've learned so much from him and I pick up things every time I'm on the field with him."
The team's secondary was already thin, since cornerback Frank Walker is out with a broken bone in his foot. Giants coach Tom Coughlin expects Walker, who sat yesterday, to be able to practice next week.
"We backed off him," Coughlin said. "He's making good progress."
We play them after the bye I believe . . . and it could get ugly.
