Dolphins acquire QB Trent Green from Chiefs
By Alex Marvez

After almost three months of trade negotiations, Kansas City quarterback Trent Green is set to become a member of the Dolphins.
Green was traded Tuesday to the Dolphins for a 2008 fifth-round draft pick that could become a fourth-rounder if he hits playtime incentives, according to Green's agent Jim Steiner. The deal will allow Green to participate in this weekend's Dolphins minicamp that begins Friday at team headquarters in Davie.
Green still must pass a Dolphins physical, which is considered a formality despite his having suffered a major concussion in the 2006 season-opener. Dolphins spokesperson Harvey Greene was unaware of the reported trade.
Green, who turns 37 in July, was one of the AFC's top quarterbacks this decade before suffering the concussion against Cincinnati. Green missed eight games and struggled upon his return, finishing ith his lowest quarterback rating (74.1) since joining the Chiefs in 2001. Green, though, still led Kansas City into the playoffs as a wildcard.
Set to enter the 2007 season with projected starter Brodie Croyle and Damon Huard as its top two quarterbacks, Kansas City allowed Green to seek a trade in March. Green agreed on a restructured contract with the Dolphins, where he has a history playing elsewhere under new head coach Cam Cameron and quarterbacks coach Terry Shea, and blocked trades to other teams by refusing to renegotiate a scheduled 2007 base salary of $7.2 million. But Chiefs President/General Manager Carl Peterson refused to trade Green until receiving what he felt was fair compensation from the Dolphins, which initially offered a seventh-round draft pick.
Green is expected to enter the 2007 season as Miami's starter, with Cleo Lemon serving as the backup and 2006 second-round pick John Beck as the third-stringer. The Dolphins are hoping that Green serves as a mentor to Beck, who is projected as Miami's long-term starter after the franchise passed on Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn in the first round of April's draft.
The Green acquisition also is expected to lead to the ultimate departure of Daunte Culpepper, who hadn't gained full medical clearance for earlier offseason drills while recovering from a second surgery on his right knee. Culpepper was expected to gain clearance to participate in this weekend's minicamp, but it's unknown whether the Dolphins would want him to practice if he doesn't fit into their long-term plans. If he were re-injured, the Dolphins would potentially be on the hook for Culpepper's $5.5 million base salary for 2007.
Green began his NFL career as a 1993 eighth-round draft choice by San Diego. After a year out of the NFL in 1994, Green played in the Canadian Football League. He signed with the Washington Redskins, where Cameron was his quarterbacks coach from 1995-96. After a solid 1998 season with the Redskins, Green was signed to a free-agent contract to start in St. Louis. But Green suffered a major injury during the 1999 preseason, paving the way for Kurt Warner to become a starter and lead the Rams to victory in Super Bowl XXXIV.
Green was a Rams backup in 2000 before being traded during the 2001 offseason to Kansas City, where he was reunited with St. Louis coach Dick Vermeil. During 88 starts with the Chiefs, Green completed 61.9 percent of his passes (1,770 of 2,777) for 21,459 yards with 118 touchdowns and 85 interceptions.

I wonder what teams he blocked deals to...
Any ideas where Culpepper could end up? There doesn't seem to be an obvious landing place. Minnesota is the most QB-needy team out there, IMO, but there's no way that happens. If I was the Bears, I would take a look at him, but Lovie's seemigly undying loyalty to Rex makes me wonder if they would go that route. Oakland seems the most likely destination, but they DID bring in McCown who, for my money, is better than Daunte at this point in their respective careers.

I would put my money on Al Davis bringing in Culpepper too, he can't have enough strong-armed QBs

Isn't Green the one who took that shot to the head? Was it last year or the year before?

Green Bay...
Favre won't play forever. They're not sold on Rodgers. And Culpepper can continue to rehab.
Or Culpepper just continues to rehab on his own. Sit out 2007. And job hunt next year.

Didn't think of them. Not just me getting old either. Favre has been there so long I just don't think of them as needing a QB. Every year I think it'll be the last one. I've got to hit sooner or later. Good thought.

The local media up here is all over this news tonight. Most people are just glad it is finally over. Surprisingly they are accepting of the fact this trade signals that this year may be a rebuilding year. Something I don't understand is the fact the KC brass think very very highly of Bradie Croyle. I'm talking future All-Pro kind of thinking. I don't get it.

Making such a stong committment to him might come back to bite the Chiefs hard in the next few years.

The Chiefs are rebuilding anyway and they only spent a 3rd round pick on him. Its not like starting Croyle is going to keep them from making a super-bowl run or set back the franchise. At least they didn't pass up on a top qb prospect because they believe in Croyle. They would have taken Quinn if not for that trade.

Don't sleep on Croyle. His knock has always been the fact that he was so light. His arm strength is very good, and he actually blew Vince young away at the college QB challenge on the distance throw, on all three throws. He has a good deal of arm strength, the question is whether he added weight to his frame.

Green was awful last year, but I agree with you that what he did prior to last year with KC has been amazing.
The fact that he's 37 and Miami is only counting on him for 2 years is why I think the trade for him for such a high price is questionable.

I'm thinking Culpepper could end up in Jacksonville or Atlanta.
The Falcons could then get rid of a certain punk.........

They won't. The cap hit on that is probably more than they can afford to take.
Last year, they had the highest percentage of salary cap donated to starters in the league. I doubt they can afford to get rid of Vick.
Jacksonville has Leftwich, Garrard, and Gray. All mediocre at best QBs. Adding another one to the mix isn't really going to help.

It also ignores the sham that Culpepper's career has been. His mobility is shot. He can't read defenses. It's over for him, and it has been for a few years. I don't even think Moss could help him now.

ProFootballTalk outlined what it would cost them and they had stated that it could be done.
Granted, it is PFT so take it for what it's worth.

They already have a one-dimensional sitting duck in the pocket in Leftwich. Why add another?

My thinking is that since they decided to hire 'Meathead' Mike Tice, why not hire his former QB as well?
Just connecting-the-dots......

Dexter Coakley for Culpepper.
Culpepper has to be a better backup than Brad Johnson' old and weak arm.
