Browns report: Quarterback picture still foggy

With old playbook out, all four are struggling to learn new offense

By Patrick McManamon
Beacon Journal sportswriter

BEREA - Looking for some clarity in the Browns' quarterback situation as minicamp concludes today?

Don't expect any for a while.

"They're all struggling,'' coach Romeo Crennel said Wednesday of his four throwers.

But it's understandable, he said.

"We've got a lot of offense in and we haven't really honed in on it well enough yet,'' Crennel said. "They're going to keep working at it. They're going to work at it while we're gone. They're going to work at it when we come back.

"Then we'll see who can pick it up the best.''

Which means more shared time and more fuzziness about the starter come the opening of training camp.

That gives the Browns six weeks to determine a starter, but those six weeks can go by in a hurry.

"The season comes on you fast,'' Charlie Frye said, "so you have to be ready.''

The most Crennel would say about his quarterbacks is that Derek Anderson has the strongest arm.

That does not mean he's doing the best job with the offense, though he seems a little more settled and comfortable than Frye, Ken Dorsey or rookie first-round pick Brady Quinn.

The players don't demonstrate the same swagger they had a month ago, when all treated picking up the offense like picking up tinker toys.

Now there's more caution.

"Until you play in a gamelike situation, it's tough to tell how you're coming along,'' Quinn said. "This is just practice and there are plenty of things you can get out of it, but until you get into a game scenario, it's tough to tell and evaluate yourself.''

"You're not going to have a full grasp until it's live,'' Frye said, adding he preferred practicing with pads.

Does Frye still consider the job his?

"We'll find out,'' he said.

When the Browns brought in Rob Chudzinski as offensive coordinator, they completely tore up their old playbook.

The new one features a lot of motion and movement, with players lining up in different places on different plays.

Instead of installing the offense in stages, Crennel said the coaching staff decided to give the team everything at once.

That enabled them to teach the offense, but didn't help speed up the learning curve.

"We've put so much in, the guys haven't had that full opportunity to grasp ahold of it,'' Crennel said. "But we felt like we wanted to expose them to everything and we can cut back if we needed to.''

Frye said he's throwing well, but admitted the volume of offense thrown at the team had everyone confused.

Quinn has faced the added difficulty of adjusting from college to the NFL.

"It's just tough because there are windows that you don't dictate,'' Quinn said. "You have to hit them when they are open or you miss big. You just don't dictate here.

"That's the biggest difference between college and the pros.''

When the offseason started, Crennel said Frye had "a leg up.'' The legs now seem to be on the same level, although if anyone has a leg in the air it might be Anderson.

With little clarity, the Browns seem on the verge of leaving minicamp without a clear-cut No. 1 quarterback. That means much early time will be spent in training camp sharing snaps among the four candidates.

Many coaches like to have their starter named and determined by the third preseason game, and it's probable Crennel will do the same, but there is no guarantee.

"At some point,'' Crennel said, "we have to make a decision to try to cut back on that so that we can give the guys who are going to play the most reps. When that's going to be, I don't know that yet.

"What we'll do is we'll keep giving them as equal a number of reps as we can until we decide we need to cut back.''

Here's hoping they continue struggling. Let Quinn hold out for a long time.

Here's hoping they continue struggling. Let Quinn hold out for a long time....and continue struggling after he stops holding out.

I never thought he'd pan out, but now I'm hoping he doesn't so we don't have to hear about not taking him.

All we need is one bad year. One real bad year....

Go Browns! Go Down!

I hope they continue struggling so we can have a top 5 pick or maybe the first pick in the draft.:)

Heres a question what do we do with the first pick if JJ breaks out Romo has a perfect year? (what a terrible problem to have)

I hope Quinn gets thrown in in the 2nd week and struggles all the way to christmas.

The Raiders will prolly be worse. Will they re-up with L. Jordan or go the McFadden route?

I'm ecstatic. We saw what an unmitigated disaster it was when Saunders tried to do that with the Skins, particularly after their "vanilla" preseason. The season went on, and Gibbs seized control of the run game, so they got better -but the Redskins clearly have superior talent to that of the Browns.

I don't see Julius staying unless he has a season that is close to what he said he was shooting for a couple years back. Even then, hes a FA anyway so hes probably gonna go somewhere that will give him all the money in the world and ALL the carries.

Given their division/conference and luck of the draw in playing the AFC East, the Browns will be fortunate to match their 4 wins from last year.

I really expect Quinn to pass both of them up over the next two months. No one works harder than Quinn and he will know the offense like the back of his hand by August.

Not only is he the best RB in college football going into next year... he also has the best nickname:

"Run DMC"...

I would say the odds are if Quinn does win the job it will be a long season for the Browns. That is not to say that Quinn will not develop into a top QB he very well may but it tends to be very difficult for rookie QB's to have much success in the begining especially when playing on what many consider a bad team.

Okay folks, here's a possible scenario that could unfold...

-Julius Jones has a monster year both running and catching the ball, which he's very capable of doing.

-Cleveland stinking the joint up and having a horrible year.

-Romo proves to be the franchise QB, therefore eliminating the probability of drafting a replacement...

*Now do the Cowboys try to resign Julius Jones and forget about drafting McFadden aka "Run DMC" or do they still draft him?

If Dallas has any shot at McFadden, Julius isn't resigned IMO.

I hope they start Quinn at least half the season(but yea after a nice little hold out would be awesome!).

It might be great for them in the long run but can only help our cause this year.

I still hate the friggin Bills for not putting in Losman a year earlier, lol.

All playing Bledsoe another year did was get them some wins(but no playoffs) and screw up our draft pick:(

I believe that might be the case as well.... I like Julius Jones though, so we'll see.

Praying for a Cleveland disastrous season is unbecoming a Cowboys fan (it takes away time praying for Redskin defeats), and hoping Brady Quinn is a failure denotes concern about the talents of Tony Romo.

Just let nature take its course and the Browns will crater; and let Quinn become a rousing success -- but always an anguished second fiddle to Romo.

I know McFadden is the ultimate goal for some people, and if he can be had with with only a single pick, then ok.

But personally I'd like to see them go the route of the Pats. They seem to ALWAYS have two 1st rounders. Why? Because they take one and then trade the other for a #1 the next year.

I just like the flexibility it gives the team in any given year.

Agreed.

I dont see Julius doing anything that great... a nice 1-2 punch with Barber like last year... not much more... so ..... he can go after this season... RUN DMC
