Memorable for all the wrong reasons: they changed the number fonts on the jerseys, slapped lame numbers on the pants, the league-wide strike, etc. Can't remember if the Minnesota loss cost us home-field advantage. I do recall Danny White hurting his thumb in practice before the Tampa playoff game, which led to a comical fumble and six easy points for the Bucs. The Green Bay win was extra satisfying, as I was living in Wisconsin at the time. Curious that we handily beat the Skins at RFK in December but were manhandled in the Championship game. This was the first inkling that we might "have something" in Hogeboom, but it was for naught.

This was just one, short disappointing season, starting with the strike and ending with our 3rd NFC Championship game loss in a row. Lost in the controversy was what should have been an outstanding season by Tony Dorsett who led the NFC in rushing. Danny White also put up good numbers but the whole season was just wrong.

I am only in favor of a strike when labor has a real case. In this instance, as in every other pro sports strike, it was all about wealthy players wanting to be even wealthier. There were other issues at stake like the pension and benefits but in actuality those were not the primary issues. The union demanded 55% of the league's gross income to go to player salaries which was completely unheard of at the time. Eventually, the NFL did consent to that type of arrangement but not for many years after this strike. In 1982 it was all about the money.

Two games into the season, NFLPA head Ed Garvey called a strike which lasted 57 days. To me the season might as well have been called off completely as the players had a hard time getting back into shape and gelling with their teammates. 1982 was ruined for me as a football fan and it took a long time for me to get over it.

I grew up in Los Angeles and had been a Dodgers fan all my life but when MLB went on strike in 1994 I had had enough and have not watched a baseball game since (well one that my brother took me to when I was out to visit them). I didn't take it quite that hard in 1982 but I was still upset with the whole thing.

Our draft that year was the worst I could remember as a Cowboys fan. Not a single player that was worth a darn and only 5th round pick, OT Phil Pozderac played more than one or two of years for us.

The playoffs were a joke as there were 16 teams involved. Dallas played well though and Tampa Bay and Green Bay on their way to the NFC Championship game against division rival Redskins. Danny White was playing well before being knocked out by Dexter Manley and was replaced by Gary Hogeboom. Hogey led us to a couple of scores but they were too little, too late as the Redskins kept feeding John Riggins the ball and we just didn't get man y chances. A couple of costly INTs hurt as well.

A very disappointing season all the way around.

That is a franchise killer draft. Not one of those picks got me any excited as a fan. I just kept telling myself that the Cowboy brass knew what they were doing. Boy was I wrong.

1982 was a fun season in many ways. The strike dominated the year of course, but there were some entertaining games along the way.

It started out with a loss to the Steelers. Dallas actually had a chance to win in the 4th quarter when White threw a TD to pull within 33-28. But Dallas could not stop Bradshaw and Pittsburgh who drove down for a clinching FG.

The second game versus St Louis was a blowout win but then the strike came. The first few games after the strike were sloppy but Dallas went on a winning streak.

The highlight game of the regular season was the win over Washington in RFK. It was a solid win highlighted by Timmy Newsome's long TD at the end of the game.

6-1 at Christmas was a good record, but the Redskins were also 6-1. Dallas had the tiebreaker and needed to keep pace record-wise to have home field advantage in the NFC. I thought the Eagles game would be relatively easy, but no, Dallas lost. They had the ball in decent field position late in the game but White threw a pick to end Dallas hopes.

The last game was on MNF and the Redskins had already gone 8-1 so Dallas had no hope of catching them for home field. Still, it was a tight game. The Dallas defense could not stop Minnesota. The only highlight, which was one of the all-time Dallas plays, was Dorsett's 99 yard run.

Dallas had two home playoff games to start the postseason and the offense played well in both. The defense came up with turnovers in the Green Bay game to stop the Packers and set up a showdown with the Redskins.

The NFC championship game was pretty one-sided. The offense could not move under White and when he was injured, Hogeboom came in and gave the team a spark. It was 24-17 Skins when Hogeboom was trying to lead the team for the tying score when they tried a screen pass to Dorsett. Once of the team's best plays. Dorsett had running room, but Hogeboom's pass was tipped to Daryl Grant who ran it in for a TD. It was the third straight NFC title game loss.

Overall, it was a solid season record and results-wise, but the playoff loss was a bitter pill to swallow. To me, it seemed that the defense faded down the stretch. They went through a six game span allowing no more than 14 points in a game, then suddenly the bottom fell out. But we still had hope for next season and many fans were excited about Hogeboom's promise.

The only real highlight of this year for me was Tony Dorsett's 99 yard TD run.

You can hear Don Meredith saying 99 and a half yards before he even got to mid field. Cosell said off mike Gifford predicted it.

So did I and then proceeded to jump up and destroy my mother's favorite fern. I was so relieved when she laughed.
