CARTER NOT CLOSE TO AN NFL RETURN

As we see it, whatever favor ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli was repaying when he suggested that former Cowboys quarterback Quincy Carter might have a shot at getting back to the NFL must have been a huge one.

On Friday, Len wrote that at least one team is "considering" bringing Carter in for a workout. If that's true, the owner of said team should be "considering" firing the G.M.

For starters, Carter couldn't even make it in the CFL, and couldn't land a job in the Arena Football League. Instead, he's been relegated to the AFL's B-level cousin, and he's not exactly tearing things up there.

An af2 source (hey, we've got sources at every level of the sport) tells us that Carter is playing "okay" by af2 standards. And he's coming off of a one-month suspension for "missing team meetings and a practice," and all that that might imply to folks who are inclined to try to read between the lines, correctly or otherwise, if they so choose to try to do so.

Carter's numbers are good but not great -- in eight games (through Friday night), he has thrown for 2,190 yards, with 48 touchdowns and six picks. And, as the source explained, Friday night's loss to the Amarillo Dusters showed that Carter still doesn't have the maturity necessary to succeed in the NFL.

On fourth and goal from the Amarillo one-foot line in the fourth quarter of a tight game in which Carter's Bossier-Shreveport Battlewings held the lead, Carter tried to dive over the pile. He was denied. Carter then went bonkos (http://www.oursportscentral.com/services/releases/?id=3497735), spiking the ball and then throwing his helmet.

The result? Two penalty flags, giving the Dusters the ball not on their own one-inch line but at their 21 yard line. Two plays later, the Dusters scored the go-ahead touchdown. Game over for the Battlewings.

For Carter, the game ended a long time ago.

Such a sad sad story. Hard to believe he was the quarterback for our team. Such a fast fall from glory.

How, exactly, does one go "bonkos?'" That reminds me of Regis, so I've no choice but to hate it.

It's wierd how life works out.

Here this guy was drafted in the third round in the NFL and was the starting qb for an NFL team.

Now just a few years later this guy can't even make it in the AFL.

Wow. He should be the poster boy for not screwing up your chance in life and working your hardest.

Just for kicks, I looked up Carter's stats in AFL2. Dude is 3rd in AFL2 in Pass Efficiency. The Battlewings are one of the leagues' highest scoring teams. The guy seems to be playing a lot better than "ok". I don't know if Carter gets a shot ever again in the NFL, but consider the source of this article. PFT.

Should have been fourth round. Of course, looking at it now, should not have been drafted at all. Jerry Jones was obsessed with finding his version of Donovan Mc Nabb at the time. A small move could have got us Drew Brees a few pick earlier.

A smarter move would not have involved moving down and then moving back up and drafting him. We could have stayed where we were and got Brees.

for a guy who has played in the NFL and a guy that is supposedly on the verge of another shot in the NFL, being 3rd is pretty much "okay". In fact, I would say its less then that.

This is the AFL minor league here.

I'd say ranking 3rd in passer rating behind the esteemed talents like Ryan Vena and Chris Wallace is something to be proud of.

I mean, who hasn't heard of those players?

Carter also is 7th in the league in completion percentage. That sounds pretty "okay" to me.

Carter also is 7th in the league in completion percentage. That sounds pretty "okay" to me.My thoughts exactly. If his stats mean he is playing well enough for a shot, why isn't anyone talking about the 2 guys ahead of him for shots? Or all of the guys in the top AFL?

Could I believe an NFL team might give him another chance? I think there are 2 chances, slim and none. Certainly it wouldn't happen because of his stellar play in AFL2, it would be a team rolling the dice on a former NFL starter, and he'd be brought in as a backup.

Anyone who believe that he is "still a top 15 QB in the NFL" is quite simply out of touch with reality. "Still?" When was he ever there? The answer is never.

Where was he being an apologist for Carter?

All he did was state that Carter was 3rd amongst efficiency and that the BattleWings are amongst the league leaders in scoring.

He was just listing the facts.

Then you come along and accuse him of being a QC apologist? LOL. Did you even read his post? He said he doesn't know if QC will get a shot at the NFL, but his AFL2 stats are not merely "average" as the article would indicate.

Average means summing up the different stats and then dividing it by the number of entries. I doubt Carter's stats are average. That was his point.

The problem is, QC, IF he wants a shot at the NFL again, has to BLOW everyone away.

No big deal, I mean he was considered third round talent, so it wasn't your mistake he was actually taken in the 2nd. :) I'm sure a lot of us would rather forget it too.

Ahhh the memories of our wonderful draft decisions...... :banghead:

A small move could have got us Drew Brees a few pick earlier.

I agree. Considering we wasted the entire draft that year, we could have easily gave everything we had to someone to move ahead of Atlanta for Drew Brees ... heck, we could have tossed in Joey Galloway as well.

It's easy to go back and say the 'boys could've gotten Drew Brees, but prior to 2004, he was being run out of San Diego. He could barely beat out Doug Flutie. That's the primary reason why they drafted Philip Rivers.
