NEW YORK - Genial comic Drew Carey was tapped Monday to replace silver-haired legend Bob Barker on the CBS daytime game show "The Price is Right." Carey confirmed the deal during a taping of the "Late Show" with David Letterman.

The selection attracted more attention than usual for a daytime show because of the prospect of replacing Barker, 83. Barker retired after 35 years in the job last month following taping of his 6,586th episode.

The opening attracted widespread interest, including from comic Rosie O'Donnell after she left "The View."

Carey, 49, spent a decade on his own ABC sitcom and also was host of the game show "Whose Line is It Anyway?," a comic improvisational show.

He will also be host of a new CBS prime-time game show, "The Power of 10," that will air first next month. He told The Associated Press that CBS officials first contacted him about "The Price is Right" immediately after he completed a pilot of the other game show this spring.

I remember playing sick from school to watch this garbage. And when I wasn't doing that, I'd run home from school--9 miles, uphill, in the snow-- to watch Match game.

Let's just hope he doesn't forget which show he's doing and uses the Whose Line Is It Anyways? scoring method.

Well he is a former Marine. Yes, I know, once a Marine always. I won't be watching game shows anytime soon, but i have no problem with him. It wasn't till Barker retired and the associated hullabaloo that I even realized that this show was still around!

I was watching a promo for Power of 10 just the other night and said to myself, Now Drew Carey he would be a good choice to replace Bob Barker. Before that I had two people that I wanted to see get it. 1. Richard Karn (played Al on home improvement did Family Fued) 2. The guy who played Elaine's boss on Seinfeld.

Nobody can really replace Bob.

I like drew. Not sure he is the right person for this job because it just does not seem right to put someone in for Bob.

Honestly don't know why they can't end the show with Bob. They have had a heck of a run for a LOOOOONG time.

The merchandise models should be interesting since Drew hangs out at the Playboy Mansion a lot. :D

I don't think Drew is a bad choice. I wish him the best at replacing a TV legend.

Geez, there's an awful lot of sentimentality over Barker on this board. Now I'm no Bob hater, but that show is entertaining for reasons other than Barker. He's great and all, but I think Drew could actually make the show better. He'll bring a more updated humor to the whole program. I can only imagine the reactions he's going to have to those old ladies running around. I'm looking forward to the change, and think it's a great move by CBS. I'll be looking forward to my lunch time thawing out now that Drew Carey's got the gig.

It might take a while for Bob's fans to get used to the change, and a little longer for Carey to establish his own daytime fanbase, but at least we won't be spending that time suffering through Rosie.

"$1.00, Drew."

It just doesn't sound right. I also miss the old announcer guy, Rod Roddy. That guy was cool.

Oh it is not a matter of not liking Drew. Loved his show when it was on and I still watch Whose line is it anyways reruns.

I was just thinking that this show has been on for a LOOOOOOOOONG time. I am not sure why they think they need to keep going on with it.

It would be nice if they just retired the show with Bob is all I am saying.

Part of the fun when I did watch it, which has been years ago, was the older ladies getting all flustered because they thought Bob was a handsome devil...somehow I doubt that happens much with Drew.:laugh2:

Anyways good luck to drew, I like him a great deal.

I agree. The show could have easily been retired, and perhaps it should have been.

The part in bold is the area that Carey is going to struggle with...I'd imagine it will take some time for those old ladies to come around to him. His sense of timing and his sense of humor may ease the transition, and I think he'll eventually win over that fanbase, but its not going to be easy.

I hope he does well. I spend my lunch breaks during the winter thawing out to price is right. I'm looking forward to it.
