Red Sox get Gagne from Rangers

NEW YORK – The Boston Red Sox have all but completed a deal to send left-hander Kason Gabbard, minor-league outfielder David Murphy and another prospect to the Texas Rangers in exchange for right-hander Eric Gagne, according to sources.
Meantime, the Red Sox and Gagne continue to talk about Gagne's role and, if Gagne is going to spend most of his time in Boston as a setup man. Gagne was due about $4 million in incentives based on games finished. That would be altered, based on appearances.
Jonathan Papelbon is expected to continue as the closer, though Gagne will fill in occasionally.

Yeah, I've been watching the trade dead-line on MLB.com (http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/news/trade_deadline/index_07.jsp). I will believe this when I see it. Gagne can veto a trade to Boston and he wants to be the closer which Boston already has Papelbon. He can't on the other hand veto one to NY. I guess the Rangers haven't been able to get Gagne resigned. :(

I think they'd have had a better chance of re-signing Gagne to a longterm deal than they would have had with Teixeira. Since the Rangers took a chance on him this year, he seemed to be willing to reward them with first dibs.
If this goes through though, I like it. More top prospects and a young, ground ball lefty pitcher they should be able to throw into the rotation immediately.

It appears to have gone through. Gagne is gone to Boston for Kason Gabbard and two Minor League outfielders.
Texasrangers.com is now reporting that they offered Tex 8 years $140M and he rejected it so they traded him.

I just read that on DMN's website. Wow. Like I said, good riddance.

Yeah, I wish the Rangers could have kept Gagne. I guess he (like Tex) was intent on leaving.... :(

Well, Tex didn't want to be here and with all the losing I don't blame him. Of course Texas getting that last second toss in to complete the deal due to Harrison's injury was just icying on the cake.

Nice! At least he's with a winner now! Go Sox!
I will miss Gabbard though...he has talent.

So are you implying the Rangers are one player away from being playoff contenders?
The farm system was in shambles. The Lofton/Tiexiera/Gagne trades infused it with some much needed talent. If the Rangers are smart they'll throw Gabbard and a few of our top pitching prospects (Diamond) into the starting rotation and give them the rest of this season and all of next season to learn against major league hitting.

Diamond is out for the year and I'd keep Hurley in AAA (At least this year). Gabbard isn't anything to be anxious for, but who knows, maybe he slips on a bananna peel and lands on his arm to where he can now locate his pitches.
If you want to give someone a shot - CJ Wilson, see if he can handle the innings, let McCarthy take his lumps. I'd like to put Tejada back in the rotation but he really needs AAA to work everything out. If Volquez can get it together I'd think about giving him a shot.
