Gary Fitzgerald, of Redskins.com, reports Washington Redskins (http://www.kffl.com/team/37/nfl) TE Chris Cooley (http://www.kffl.com/player/9382/nfl) has agreed to a multi-year contract extension with the team. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Cooley, the Redskins' 2004 third-round pick out of Utah State, has emerged as one of the league's top tight ends. Last year he led the Redskins in catches (57) and touchdowns (six) and was second on the team in receiving yards (734).

Damn smart move. Cooley is a good TE. One of their best draft picks.
I know this is going to sound homerish; but this is what I think Fasano can become. A Cooley type player. Him and Witten.....damn.
We're going to have a great TE tandem.

By the letter of what he said, yes. But didnt he lead with receptions in the high eighties and not fifty-seven?

The team went 6-10 in 2004, so there was a lot of pathetic going around that season starting with Vinny being the starting QB.
Heh its actually the 2nd smart extension. Ladell Betts was supposed to be a free agent this offseason but we extened his contract. He recieved a 5 year 15 million deal. A starting caliber RB for that price and now a really reasonable deal for Cooley. Damn that midget Snyder ;)

Heh its actually the 2nd smart extension. Ladell Betts was supposed to be a free agent this offseason but we extened his contract. He recieved a 5 year 15 million deal. A starting caliber RB for that price and now a really reasonable deal for Cooley. Damn that midget Snyder ;)
Are you actually coming here to gloat about two decent things that midget did?
How about your salary cap chaos and firesale with draft picks for overpriced vets, and idiotic trades?
Your midget has made more mistakes than successes but go ahead and be proud of two decent signings.

Funny that a player nicknamed "Captain Chaos" would be seeking stability. Tight end Chris Cooley (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6840) got just that Saturday, signing a six-year,
$30 million contract extension with the Washington Redskins (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=was).
Cooley, 6-foot-3, 265 pounds, was scheduled to earn a base salary of $850,000 for 2007.
The contract includes $14 million in guaranteed money for the player whose colorful outfits and antics are matched only by his reliability and strength as one of the Redskins' best offensive weapons. Cooley caught 57 passes for 734 yards and six touchdowns last season and led all NFL tight ends in yards after the catch (7.35) and yards after contact (4.1).
"It feels so good," Cooley said. "My biggest worry was that I just wanted to be here. I can play my whole career with the Redskins; that's an unbelievable thing."
A third-round draft pick from Utah State in 2004, Cooley has 165 catches for 1,822 yards over three seasons and has yet to miss a game. His rookie contract was due to expire at the end of this season. He and the Redskins have been talking about an extension for months without much progress -- until Cooley pressed for a resolution over the last four days.
"I'm very happy that it's not a worry once the season starts," Cooley said. "Even last season, I thought about it a lot. You're thinking about your whole future and your life. Now I can focus on playing football, making the Pro Bowl."
Cooley's production dropped last season as he and the rest of the offense adjusted to the schemes of new assistant coach Al Saunders. He looked more comfortable in training camp and has developed into the second option in the passing game behind wideout Santana Moss (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5463).
Saunders, a former offensive coordinator with Kansas City, said he plans to use Cooley the same way he used Tony Gonzalez (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=3950) with the Chiefs.
"It's great to get this done and get this out of the way," coach Joe Gibbs said. "He's earned it. He's always been one of our hardest workers."
Cooley took the backdoor route to get his contract talks resolved. He said he started discussing the matter with assistant coaches earlier this week, and they sent the word along the pipeline, through the Redskins hierarchy and all the way up to owner Dan Snyder.
"I really tried to push it from my end to have it over with," Cooley said. "The Redskins made it easy. I think it was understood that I had outplayed my rookie contract."

Yep-too bad Al Saunders under-utilized him last year. No wonder why they had so many red zone woes.
It's bad for us this year 'cuz likely Gibbs/Saunders will finally be on the same page.:(

Nah thats not true. Jason LaCanfora (Skins beat reporter) mentioned that the team didn't offer a contract to Davis after finding out his demands.
He got the same money as Dockery and Steinbach and more than Dielman. We would have rather resigned Dockery or Steinbach for the same money since there both far superior players than Davis.
Either way, the price was too much for all of them since they would be the fourth best lineman on our team. Too high of a price when your not even considered the best on your line.

Cooley was under utilized by Mark Brunell. Last year with Brunell he merely averaged 34 yards a game which would have resulted in about a 500 yard season (merely average for a TE).
With Campbell he came close to averaging 60 yards a game. If he keeps that up he should be a 1000 yard (or close) TE this year along with double digit touchdowns :eek:
