Wildcats on the rise with Santos
October 5, 2004

The University of New Hampshire's impressive 51-40 road victory over 10th-ranked Villanova Saturday night vaulted the Wildcats three spots to ninth in this week's Sports Network 1-AA football poll, while dropping Villanova to 14th.

UNH got an outstanding effort from redshirt freshman quarterback Ricky Santos of Bellingham, who was named the Sports Network co-player of the week for the second time this season after completing 38 passes for 538 yards and six touchdowns, all school records.

Maine's last-minute 43-38 loss to defending champion No. 4 Delaware dropped the Black Bears from eighth to 12th, while Northeastern's 38-35 overtime loss to William & Mary caused the Huskies to fall from 16th to 23d.

New Hampshire's Santos wins Player of the Week award
Each week during the season, readers can select their pick for USATODAY.com Player of the Week. Choices will be made available on Sunday night. USATODAY.com will name its own winner every Tuesday during the regular season. For a list of past honorees, see our archive page.

New Hampshire's Ricky Santos made quite an impression on Rutgers in his first career start.
By Christopher Barth, AP

New Hampshire's Ricky Santos won this week's USATODAY.com Player of the Week honor after leading the I-AA Wildcats to an uplikely upset of Rutgers. Santos did not take home the fan voting portion of the award as Notre Dame freshman Darius Walker won more than 50% of the votes.

This week's winner:

Ricky Santos, QB, New Hampshire — Rutgers was riding high after winning its opener, but New Hampshire and Ricky Santos brought them quickly to earth. The redshirt freshman threw for five touchdows in his first career start to rally the I-AA Wildcats to a 35-24 upset victory on the road. Santos hit 30 of his 40 passes and totaled 385 yards in the air. He threw for three scores in the second half as New Hampshire came back from a 24-14 deficit.

This week's nominees:

Korey Hall, LB, Boise State — The Broncos draw a lot of headlines for their offense, but it was a key defensive play that swung their game against Oregon State. Boise State trailed 14-3 when Korey Hall made the first of his three interceptions in the game. The sophomore returned the takeaway 46 yards for touchdown to start an avalanche of scoring by the Broncos. Hall also added four tackles in the 53-34 victory.

Santonio Holmes, WR, Ohio State — When then needed him most, Santonio Holmes made several key catches to help Ohio State squeeze past Marshall 24-21. The sophomore hauled in touchdown passes of 80 and 47 yards in the first half to give the Buckeyes an early lead. With the game tied in the final minute, Holmes, who finished with 10 receptions for 224 yards, caught passes of 9 and 8 yards to set up Mike Nugent's game-winning, 55-yard field goal on the final play.

Kyle Orton, QB, Purdue — It was nearly a perfect outing for Kyle Orton as Purdue rolled to an easy victory against Ball State. The senior quarterback was 23-of-26 for 329 yards and five touchdown passes. Orton's scoring strikes of 9, 17, 15, 43 and 15 yards all came in the first half, helping the Boilermakers cruise 59-7.

Darius Walker, RB, Notre Dame — A true freshman was an unlikely hero for Notre Dame. Darius Walker came off the bench and carried 31 times for 115 yards and two touchdowns as the Irish rolled past No. 7 Michigan 28-20. Tyrone Willingham's squad trailed 9-0, but runs by Walker from 6 and 5 yards out propelled Notre Dame to a much-needed win after a season-opening loss to BYU.

Santos makes Payton Award cut
Staff Report

What the heck, why not . . . Santos.

Ricky Santos, University of New Hampshire redshirt freshman quarterback, has played his way onto the official Walter Payton Award candidates list. The Payton Award is given annually to the top player in I-AA football. It mirrors the coveted Heisman Trophy, given annually to the top player in all of college football.

Santos became one of seven new players to be added to the "Payton Watch" list this week. There are now 16 players on the list, which will undergo two revisions prior to the distribution of ballots on Nov. 22. Members of the media and I-AA sports information directors elect the Payton Award winner.

There is a distinct New England tint to the Payton Watch list. UMaine running back Marcus Williams, Harvard back Clifton Dawson, and Yale quarterback Alvin Cowan are also on the list.

In addition, Colgate running back Jamaal Branch is in contention for the Payton Award. Colgate defeated Dartmouth earlier this season.

Against 10th-ranked Villanova in Philadelphia on Saturday, Santos connected with eight different receivers to pile up 538 yards, a school record. He also completed 38 passes for six for touchdowns. Both are UNH records. His TD passes covered 29, 60, 35, 12, 2 and 45 yards and led the Wildcats to a 51-40 win.

His 538 passing yards constituted the third-best performance in Atlantic 10 Conference history.

And Villanova won't soon forget Santos or his exploits. The UNH quarterback recorded the most passing yards and passing touchdowns by a Villanova opponent. Ever.

Yesterday, he received the Gold Helmet Award, a weekly honor presented by the New England Football Writers.

Moving into Payton Award consideration and winning the Gold Helmet Award in the same week is big news — but there's more.

Santos was also named The Sports Network National Player of the Week, a member of the I-AA.org All-Star team, Bob Hansen's Football Gazette National Player of the Week and both Player and Rookie of the Week in the Atlantic 10 Football Conference.

But wait. There's more. Santos also was named this week's College Sports Television's Player of the Week. He will be featured on the CSTV's I-AA Players of the Week page of the CollegeSports.com Web site for the entire week.

In 4½ games this season, Santos has connected on 122 of 177 passes, good for 1,546 yards and 16 touchdowns. He has been intercepted twice.

He walks on and goes 10/11 and punks Delaware!

Delaware football team drops opener to UNH

9:36 a.m., Sept. 3, 2004--Deflating a boisterous sellout crowd of 22,727 fans, the University of Delaware football team fell 24-21 to the University of New Hampshire on Thursday night at Delaware Stadium.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens lost just their second season opener in the last 10 years.

New Hampshire won with strong line play and gritty performances at quarterback by redshirt freshman Ricky Santos and R.J. Harvey, whose primary position is at running back. Both were pressed into service when starter Mike Granieri went down with a knee injury in the first half.

Santos completed 10 of 11 passes for 146 yards, including a game-clinching 44-yard touchdown pass to David Ball early in the fourth quarter, and Harvey ran for 114 yards on 32 carries and scored two touchdowns.

New Hampshire scored first, getting the ball after UD’s initial drive ended with an interception thrown by starting quarterback Sonny Riccio, and led until early in the fourth quarter when Sean Bleiler scored on a seven-yard touchdown run to give the Hens a 21-17 lead.

New Hampshire came right back on its next possession, capping a 67-yard drive with the touchdown catch by Ball.

“Any loss is a tough loss,” UD Head Coach K.C. Keeler said. “You can't be that inefficient inside the 20-yard line and turn the ball over. They really took it to us up front and that surprised us because we have so many players back on the defensive front and at linebacker. We didn't tackle well and that is a credit to New Hampshire. We come out of this game with a lot of questions. We have to handle adversity and I think we will be fine. We knew this was going to a tough opener and it was.”

Riccio completed 13 of 17 passes for 101 yards and one touchdown, a 29-yard screen pass to running back Lonnie Starks. Backup quarterback Ryan Carty, who came on late in the game when Riccio suffered leg cramps, completed three passes in five attempts for 71 yards.

Bleiler ran for 90 yards on 12 carries and Starks for 74 yards on 11 carries. Starks also was UD’s leading receiver, hauling in four passes for 40 yards.

UD will return to action against Towson University, the newest member of the Atlantic 10 Football Conference, at 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 11, at Delaware Stadium.

NO. 1 UNH'S RICKY SANTOS AND BARON FLENORY EARN ATLANTIC 10 HONORS
PHILADELPHIA--University of New Hampshire quarterback Ricky Santos (Bellingham, Mass.) and senior teammate and strong safety Baron Flenory (Pittsburgh, Pa.) were both honored by the Atlantic 10 Football Conference for their outstanding efforts in UNH's 45-17 victory over No. 38 ranked Villanova on Oct. 1. Santos was named the Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Week and Flenory earned Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Santos, who is listed as one of the 16 top candidates to win the Walter Payton Award, completed 28 of 33 pass attempts for 371 yards and five touchdowns in the victory. He was very effective early in the contest as he completed his first 10 passes for 142 yards and a pair of TDs. During that stretch he connected with five different receivers. Santos helped UNH to score touchdowns on five of its first eight possessions and the offense racked up a grand total of 572 yards in the game, with 201 rushing yards and 371 through the air. Santos completed three of his touchdown passes to junior wide receiver David Ball (Orange, Vt.). The first was a 66-yard version of the "Flea-Flicker" where, on UNH's first play from scrimmage, Santos threw a backwards pass to redshirt freshman receiver Mike Boyle (Plymouth, N.H.), who then flipped the football back to Santos, who found Ball wide open down the center of the football field.

Looking at the season numbers for Santos, he has completed 107 of 145 passes for an eye-popping completion percentage of 73.8. He also checks in with 1,396 passing yards in just four games played for an average of 349 yards per contest, and he has passed for 12 TDs, while running for three more.

In the post-game press conference Flenory said that he and the rest of the defense have a goal ,and that is to get the football back in Santos's hands as quickly as possible. Flenory got the job done as he single-handedly grabbed an interception and returned it 11 yards, forced a fumble, came up with a sack for a loss of six yards, recorded two tackles for a loss of seven yards and he was second on the team in overall tackles with 12 on the afternoon (9 solo).

Flenory is now leading UNH with three interceptions and is fourth on the squad in tackles with 29.

Thanks in part to the hard-hitting Flenory, the UNH defense has not given up more than 21 points so far this season and has only allowed an average of 17.8 ppg. after four games played. UNH held UC Davis to a season-low 13 points.

Santos and the UNH offense are averaging well above 17.8 ppg. with a mark of 173 total points, good for an average of 43.25 ppg. Over the last three games played, UNH has scored 156 points for an average of 52.0 ppg.

UNH is not off to its best start since the 2000 campaign when the team opened with a 4-0 record. The last time the Wildcats opened 5-0 or better was back in 1977 when UNH opened with seven consecutive victories.

The No. 1 ranked Wildcats will return to action on Sat., Oct. 8, when the squad travels to play at No. 16 William & Mary. Game time is 1 p.m.

Santos back at it again!

I watched Santos on TV against Montana in the 2004 I-AA playoffs. I think it was on ESPN2.

NH pretty much got trounced by a pretty good Montana team, but Santos had a decent game. I didn't realize he was only a freshman last year.

I think he is plenty big enough, but even if you put up huge numbers in I-AA, its pretty tough to get much recognition.

Romo was prolific and was undrafted. Craig Ochs and Dustin Long were top notch I-AA QBs last year that went undrafted. Dave Dickenson a few years back put up sick numbers and went undrafted (although he fared alright in the CFL).

It'll be interesting to see if he gets any interest in a couple of years when he comes out.

Yep, 1-AA just isn't highly regarded or at least highly scouted. Ochs and Long both had some good moments in the Big 12 before transferring to smaller schools and still could not get drafted.

No. 4 Wildcat football takes out No. 7 Massachusetts, 34-28
~Ball named 19th Bill Knight Award Winner, Santos becomes all-time school passing touchdown leader~
Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. – Junior wide receiver David Ball (Orange, Vt.) caught four touchdown passes and posted 199 yards on nine catches to lead the fourth ranked University of New Hampshire football team to a 34-28 Atlantic 10 victory against the University of Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon in front of 12,539 fans at McGuirk Alumni Stadium.

Ball was named the 19th recipient of the Bill Knight Award, which is given annually to the Most Valuable Player of the UMass/UNH football game. He is the 12th UNH player to earn the award in its 19-year history.

Sophomore quarterback Ricky Santos (Bellingham, Mass.) became UNH’s all-time school passing touchdown leader with four touchdowns and 248 yards passing. Santos finished the day with 18 completions on 28 attempts, he now has 56 career passing touchdowns, which broke former Wildcat Ryan Day’s record of 52.

“I thought the game set itself up to be a huge game, with their defense and our offense, I thought we came out an executed just better than they did and I thought our defense played a lot better than I think people thought they would. They have been doing it all year for us,” said Ball.

With the victory the ‘Cats improve to 7-1 overall, while Massachusetts drops to 6-2 overall. The teams are currently tied atop the Atlantic 10 North Division standings with 5-1 records in league play.

SECOND-RANKED WILDCATS ESCAPE WITH WIN OVER HOFSTRA
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - University of New Hampshire quarterback Ricky Santos (Bellingham, Mass.) threw four touchdown passes, including the decisive score to Aaron Brown (Central Square, N.Y.) with 6:40 left in regulation, as the second-ranked Wildcats escaped with a 29-26 win over the Hofstra Pride in Atlantic 10 action Saturday afternoon at Shuart Stadium.

Hofstra (5-4, 3-3 Atlantic 10) had a golden opportunity to retake the lead with two minutes left in regulation, but on a first-and-goal play from the UNH two-yard line, Pride running back Kareem Huggins fumbled the ball before reaching the end zone, and the Wildcats recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchback. UNH proceeded to spend all but one second of the remaining time, and a hail mary pass by Hofstra quarterback Anton Clarkson was intercepted as time expired.

Santos finished the game 23-of-35 for 285 yards and the four touchdowns, two of them to junior David Ball (Orange, Vt.), who caught eight passes for 123 yards. Senior running back John McCoy (Groton, Conn.) had a solid all-around game, carrying the ball 21 times for 91 yards and adding six catches for 70 yards.

Looks like he is dominating his competition. If he has any type of arm strength, I think he will probably be high on the NFL radar by the time he becomes a senior.

Steve McNair was a 1st round pick out of Div. 1-AA Alcorn, because he dominated his competition, plus had the necessary measurables like size, speed and arm strength.

They were Southwest Texas when I played against them while attending Texas Southern, the original TSU here in Texas.

Franchione also coached here during the early 90's.

We've got 2 NFL prospects

DT Fred Evans and QB Nealy

I saw the stats on that DE. Amazing stuff I think he had 17.5 last year so it's no fluke.

University of New Hampshire quarterback Ricky Santos, the 2005 Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year, has been named one of three finalists for the Walter Payton Award, presented to the nation's most outstanding player in Division I-AA.

Santos, a sophomore, is joined by Brown senior running back Nick Hartigan, the Ivy League Player of the Year, and senior quarterback Erik Meyer of Eastern Washington.

The voting is based on regular season performance, during which time Santos led the Atlantic 10 in five offensive categories, including passing yards (3,200) and touchdown passes (33). A five-time A-10 Offensive Player of the Week selection, the Bellingham, Mass., native is the first sophomore to earn Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year honors since former UNH running back Jerry Azumah in 1996, who won the Payton Award in 1998.

UNH wide receiver David Ball finished seventh in the voting.

Wow - Final 3

If he can rally UNH in the playoffs his stock should have him in it to win the Payton.

Didn't Romo win that?

10 Questions for Ricky Santos
By: Mark Daniels
Issue date: 9/13/05 Section: News
Article Tools: Page 1 of 1

And imagine that at the start of the 2004 season Ricky Santos was the fourth-string quarterback. He very quickly moved up in the ranks to have one of the most dominating seasons that Wildcat nation has ever seen. As a freshman Santos set the UNH record for touchdown passes in a season with 31, the mark for passing yards with 3,318, and the record for the best completion percentage in a single season.

Santos was also a Walter Payton Award finalist, named ECAC Rookie of the Year, the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, and Second Team All-Atlantic 10.

1. Do you have any pre-game rituals or superstitions?

I'm not really that superstitious of a guy so I guess I don't have any superstitions but I do like to get the guys all fired up. Kind of walking around getting in people's faces and getting them ready to go out for battle.

2. What are your personal goals for this season?

My first goal is to win the Atlantic 10 and then a National Championship. I don't care if I throw for five touchdowns or not one. I just love to win and that's what I'm all about. I will do whatever the team needs me to do to win. Another goal I have is to end up as a finalist for the Walter Payton award. It's like the Heisman for I-AA football. Also it is a goal to be an All-American by the end of the year, but like I said it's all about winning.

3. What are your long-term football goals?

I would love to end playing professional football somewhere. Whether in the NFL, the Canadian Football League or maybe even in Europe, but right now I still have three more years, including this one, at UNH so I'm just going to worry about that. I still have plenty of football to play here before I need to think about anything after.

4. What is your dream job out of college?

My dream job would have to be an NFL talent scout. I would be able to travel all over the globe and watch the game I love for a profession, I don't see it getting to be much better than that.

5. This summer, how did you prepare for the upcoming football season?

I stayed up here in Durham along with 60 other kids all summer long. We lifted 4 days a week and ran twice a week. I feel this is such a huge part of the reason why were so successful last year, because of the dedication our players are having over the summer months when it is not mandatory to be here.

6. Which game on the schedule are you looking forward to the most?

I have to say I've circled Oct 29 on my calendar, which is the date we play U-Mass. First of all I don't like them very much because they gave me no love in the recruiting process and I'm from Massachusetts and second and more importantly I had my worst game last year against them and we ended up losing that game.

7. With high expectations coming into this season, can you see a difference with the team's attitude compared to the seasons past?

Yeah, I definitely see a different attitude in the locker room and on the playing field this year. Everybody knows what we have riding on every game this year so I think there is an overall increase in focus level. Everybody has a little extra bounce in their step because of the national recognition we have been getting.

8. The team had a great recruiting class for this year, how have some of the incoming freshmen looked?

They have looked real good, two in general that have stood in my mind. Matt O'Brien who plays running back has really played great so far and has made the travel squad, which is impressive for a freshman. On the defense side of the ball, John Clements who plays cornerback for us has also looked sharp and because of his play he also has made the travel squad. I wouldn't be surprised if I saw either of those getting reps in some games.

9. Who on the team is the team leader? What do they do for the team?

We have a lot of good leaders on the team but I feel our captain John McCoy probably does the most for the team. He gives the team prayers to us before games and is always there for players if they have problems and need someone to talk to.

10. Who is the team clown? What do they do for the team?

The team clown would have to be Will Morey; he is hands-down the funniest kid on the team and I laugh every time we have a conversation. He is great. If, say, a player is upset because of coaches or whatever, he will definitely be able to put a smile on that person's face.

The kid does a pretty good job on his interviews too. If no NFL team gives him a look, I would not be surprised to see him tear the CFL to shreds.

But with the numbers he is already putting up, I don't see the NFL not inviting him to the combine after his last season.

UNH goes down today in playoffs

Santos 345 yards on 27-42 with 3 TD's no picks
He stays in the running as final 3 for Payton award. A win would have been bigger.

Just got back from the Tx. State game.

Nealy was very mediocre in the game with 2 picks but completed the passes when they counted the most. His two picks were pretty goofy. He scrambled to the sidelines on one and tried to throw it out of bounds. Unfortunatley he only threw it 2-3 feet to the right of the sideline which wasn't far enough becuase the DB came over and picked it. The second was on a 3rd and long long ball that was more a punt then anything. He had a nice scramble for a TD and completed a pass on 4th and 8 with a minute left to seal the game.

Thanks to Notrthern Iowa for taking out NH. I don't think our boys could handle that cold weather. It was 86 degrees out there and it's friggin December. They'll host N. Iowa on Friday at 7.
