The Myth of Our "Weak" Pass Rush
Where did this come from?
42 sacks, gentlemen and ladies
7th in the league....
On the other hand we've given up more passing yards over the past two years than any time in our history.
At some point getting more sacks won't resolve why we keep blowing 4th quarter leads and not keeping people down on 3rd a 13
If you looked at our team production last year and concluded that 50 sacks is what we need, we just need 50 sacks, not 42 then that's silly.
If you want to make the argument that sacks are not the end-all be-all of pass rush metrics, you can look up my posting history, I'm totally 100% with you, and I think you'd find that our pressure statistics are actually pretty fantastic (Almost Anthony counts for something!)
If you look at this team last year and said, where can we get the highest value over replacement player (VORP) this year, the answer was CB...... We just did. For the foreseeable future. We have put ourselves in the best position you can to succeed.
If our pass rush remains "weak" and gets 42 sacks next year, you can book a playoff spot for us, because we won't be givin up 400 yards of passing.
Good night folks, It's been a good and full day

And before some smart-*** swoops in, yes we did indeed give up 400 yards passing in one game last season.
And we gave Vick his two highest QB ratings of last season.
And we gave Matt freaking Moore his highest completion yardage last season.
And we gave Mark Sanchez his second best game of all last season.
And we gave Rex Grossman his third most yards last season.
So there's that.

But, but, but, but, but, but,but we need a back up LB, and 2 starting DT's and a back up DE, and a D line coach, and defensive equipment guy. Don't even get me started on the offense!

Good post. We can't have pro bowlers at every position, I think we've set ourselves up real nice!

Do you watch the games? And I don't mean that in a rude way at all, I simply can't fathom how anyone who actually watched this team play last year could feel anything but completely apathy toward the pass rush.
Sure, the numbers look nice at the end of the season, but the times when this defense was able to put consistent pressure on an opposing quarterback were few and far between. ESPECIALLY in situations where a stop was absolutely needed (3rd and long, late game rally, etc.). The pass rush absolutely disappeared.
BTW - don't you think giving up so many passing yards could have a direct correlation to that lack of a pass rush?

Well I'm not too worried about Ryan producing pressure with his creative blitz packages, after all thats why we hired him.
But to run his system, he needs protection on the backend, and that's what we did today. Funny thing is Ryan already said he was looking at DBs, it wasn't a secret.
His system will produce more sacks this year simply cause we might actually see something that is as rare as a blue moon in Dallas.....a coverage sack.

And having one of the most exploitable CBs in the league had nothing to do with that?

Sure helps when one player gets almost half those sacks.
Once Ware was neutralized, QB's could have made themselves an espresso back there and drank it for good measure.

Sure is easy to neutralize Ware when you have an automatic insta-completion vs a DB that can't cover.

1-2-3 completion. About that fast too.
Ware puts his hands on his hips, walks back to the huddle.

Thats why Ryan is here, to create that pressure.
I don't think we are done with the D, I'm looking for another DE or OLB to be taken except the difference is they will have more time to get there this year cause our secondary will be improved.

Great post.
In the season finale, I remember seeing Eli run for his life a TON. Problem was he'd always get rid of the ball in the nick of time and, of course, it was usually hauled in for a completion.

This season, I won't even break a sweat over record...and I'm sure you will agree. This fan can see a firm direction as well as youthful upgrade through this team. Make no mistake, the NFL East is now fully 'lethal' once again. And the Cowboys are smack dab in the fight...Giants as Champs or not.
There's no right way to do the wrong thing.
To compete for the playoffs, Dallas has to improve here: Only four sacks against Eli Manning over the past six games!

I can get where the apathy comes from. Short throws like the skins and giants threw on us or having the eagles and sea chickens run ask over our DE's which emasculated our rush. Better end play frees up our olb. Corners give them timeand can blow up 3 step drops which gets you throwaways.
