Default iPad Mini

“You can hold it in one hand. This isn’t a shrunken down iPad. It’s an entirely new design…There is nothing as amazing as this.” It’s incredibly thin and light.
It’s 7.2 mm thinner. It’s as thin as a pencil. Weighs .68 punds — 53 percent lighter than iPad. It’s as light as a pad of paper, Schiller says. It comes in black and white.

On to screen size. Said team thought about what size to choose. iPad 2 is 9.7 inches. new iPad mini is 7.9-inches on the diagonal. Resolution is the same so all the software (apps/content) created for iPad works on iPad mini unchanged, he says.

10:59: Schiller is going through iPad mini specs. Dual-core A5 chip. New cameras. Ultrafast wireless and LTE capabilities. Lightning adapter. 10-hour battery life, just like the fourth-generation iPad.

A video testimonial about the iPad mini is on screen now. “If all that he whad done was take the original iPad and reduce it, all you would be aware of was everything that was missing,” Jonny Ive, Apple’s chief designer says on the video. He says the iPad mini is a rethink of the design. “We felt strongly that the 7.9-inches was exactly the right display size, but it became clear that we had to reduce the borders so that you can pick it up with one hand.”

The custom design has thinner display, and largest and thinnest battery Apple has ever developed.

The iPad mini weighs 0.68 pounds and 7.2 mm thin. “The result is an extraordinary iPad,” Ives said, “that will be used in so many different places in so many different ways.’

Apple is also introducing iPad covers in multiple colors.

The iPad mini starts with 16-gigs of memory. WiFi version starts at $329. (iPad 2 starts at $399, fourth-generation iPad starts at $499 with Retina display.) Schiller says the wide range of configurations means there’s something for everyone.

Pre-orders for iPad mini and fourth-generation iPad will start on Oct. 26. WiFi versions ship a week later in the U.S. and multiple countries. Cellular versions will ship two weeks after that in the U.S. first and then around the world after that.

$329 seems way too steep to me. The Kindle Fire at $199 may be the better option for a lot of people. An extra $129 is a lot to pay for the iOS ecosystem.

Very surprised they came in this high.

Otherwise, the device looks amazing. Super thin and light.

As I mentioned in another thread. It has to be that high or they would knock out the iPod market.

The iPod market is approaching meaningless at this point. They're overpriced for what they offer and sales are declining. There's probably 2-4 million people each quarter that would buy an iPad mini at $250 that wouldn't buy an iPod at that price.
